It’s been an up-and-down road for the cult favorite comedy series Mystery Science Theater 3000, and after finding a new home at Netflix in 2017 following a near 20-year gap, the series is going on hold again as the streaming service has chosen to cancel it, according to star Jonah Ray.

Beginning in 1988, the premise of the show has mostly followed a human test subject as they are imprisoned aboard the spacecraft Satellite of Love by mad scientists and their henchmen (collectively called “the Mads”) and is forced to watch a series of bad movies in order to find one that will drive the test subject insane. In order to keep his sanity, the first subject, Joel (Joel Hodgson), built a series of sentient robots from parts aboard the ship, including Tom Servo, Crow T. Robot, Gypsy and Cambot, the silent recorder of the experiments.
Crow and Servo keep from going mad alongside the human subject by frequently commenting and wisecracking towards the movie, a process known as “riffing,” at regular intervals throughout the movie. The episodes have gained popularity in the years since its start, receiving theatrical releases and new specials across Comedy Central and Netflix.
