Rumor: Black Widow delay will not impact MCU timeline

Following yesterday’s report that Disney had delayed the highly-anticipated release of Marvel Studios’ Black Widow, MCU fans have been wondering how the Scarlett Johansson-led film’s rescheduling might affect the overall Phase 4 timeline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In a new report by Variety, a source close to the studio claims that Black Widow‘s delayed theatrical release won’t really affect the timeline.

Even though the source’s comment doesn’t really make things clear, it might confirm two different ways that Black Widow could fit into the timeline. The first one could be that the film might finally hit the theaters just before August, which is The Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘s expected release on Disney+, or the film might not really make a significant impact to the MCU’s next phase at all. It could be that because of its prequel nature (taking place between Civil War & Endgame) it really doesn’t matter if the movie debuts before or after the new TV shows or November’s Eternals, so it won’t be required viewing in terms of easter eggs, new characters, plot threads, etc.

Scarlett Johansson returns as Natasha Romanoff, a spy and assassin who grew up being trained by the KGB before breaking from their grasp and becoming an agent of SHIELD and an Avenger. The film is expected to be set after the events of Captain America: Civil War, but before Avengers: Infinity War.

Black Widow will also feature a star-studded cast including Golden Globe nominee David Harbour (Stranger ThingsHellboy) as Alexei aka The Red Guardian, Florence Pugh (Fighting with My Family) as Yelena Belova, Academy Award-winning actress Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Melina and O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason.

The movie was directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) from a script written by Jac Schaeffer (The Hustle). Black Widow currently has no release date.
