Matrix 4: Chad Stahelski teases stunt collaboration with Lana Wachowski

Following the official confirmation that John Wick directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch are indeed coming back to the Matrix universe for the highly-anticipated fourth installment, Stahelski has revealed new details about their upcoming stunt collaboration with Lana Wachowski. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Stahelski has teased Wachowski’s great ideas and “absolutely crazy” action sequences while also praising the Matrix 4 writer-director’s whole visual style.

“She comes with this idea. She comes with this set piece. She comes with, ‘This is the character. This is what’s happening. This is the conflict. This is where I need him to be emotionally or psychologically or whatever plot-wise at the end of this sequence. What do you got in your bag of tricks to make it absolutely crazy?’” Stahelski said. “She’s one of those great people that she’ll tell us something and we’ll say, ‘Okay, we’ve got this.’ Then she’s like, ‘Oh my God, that’s awesome. I didn’t think of that, but what if we took this and made it this?’”

He also assures fans that they’ll definitely love what Wachowski’s doing with the film. “She always kind of one-ups you and that’s a challenge. She’s probably still the most challenging person, in a good way, that I’ve ever worked with… If you love the Matrix trilogy, you’re going to love what she’s doing because she’s brilliant and fun and understands what the fans want.”

Lana Wachowski co-wrote the script with Aleksander Hemon and David Mitchell, and will direct the film as well. Academy-Award winning cinematographer John Toll (Legends of the FallBraveheart) will shoot the highly-anticipated sequel, succeeding Bill Pope who was the cinematographer for The Matrix trilogy.

The Matrix 4 is scheduled for a May 21, 2021 release. The fourth installment will be featuring the return of Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Jada Pinkett Smith, reprising their iconic roles as Neo, Trinity and Niobe. The film will also star newcomers Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Jessica Henwick, Neil Patrick Harris, Toby Onwumere, Brian J. Smith, Ellen Hollman and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who is rumored to be playing young Morpheus. It was recently teased that should scheduling work out, Lambert Wilson could possibly return for The Matrix 4 as the villain the Merovingian.

Last year we asked our readers if they were interested in more movies in the series, with 69% of those voting saying “Yes!” In a secondary poll, 58% said they wanted to see a continuation of the series. Looks like they’ll be getting what they wanted!

The three previous films—The Matrix (1999), The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and The Matrix Revolutions (2003)—have earned more than $1.6 billion at the global box office and were all top-10 domestic hits in their respective years of release. The Matrix Revolutions was also the first film ever to release simultaneously in every major country at the same hour around the world.
