Exclusive: Noah Segan discusses possible Knives Out 2 return

While Rian Johnson’s 2019 whodunnit comedy featured an outstanding ensemble, one face not a surprise to fans of the writer/director was Noah Segan, a longtime collaborator of Johnson’s, and while chatting with the 36-year-old star for the western horror The Pale Door, ComingSoon.net got a little tease about whether he would return for the highly-anticipated Knives Out 2.

Segan, who made his film debut with Johnson in 2005’s Brick, appeared in Knives Out as Trooper Wagner, a detective assigned to the central murder investigation who also happens to be a big fan of the murder victim. While the sequel is being planned with Daniel Craig expected to return as eccentric detective Benoit Blanc, it’s unknown at the moment if any other characters from the original will return and while Segan’s lips were tightly sealed about his future in the franchise, he did offer an anecdote that makes it hard to think he’s not coming back.

“You know, it would be very uncomfortable for us to go to a Dodgers game next season, which I hope happens, and for him to have shot a movie that I was not a part of,” Segan chuckled. “It’s not to say that I can tell you that it will or it won’t happen, but you know, I definitely will not be picking up the tab for a Dodger dog if he decides to eschew my talents [laughs]. But in all seriousness, you know, he’s working on something now and I love him dearly, much like Aaron and the rest of the guys. You know, he’s somebody I’d do anything in the world for. So I really hope to be a part of anything he does.”

Since Brick, Segan has appeared in all of Johnson’s films, with key supporting roles in The Brothers Bloom and Looper as well as a cameo appearance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi before returning to the supporting spotlight in Knives Out.

In January, Johnson revealed that the Knives Out sequel will be centered on Daniel Craig’s character detective Benoit Blanc as he investigates a new case involving a new ensemble cast, with film studio Lionsgate greenlighting the sequel in February. The film had its theatrical release last November 27 and has since grossed nearly $300 million worldwide. It was nominated for three Golden Globe Awards including Best Picture, and received an Academy Award-nomination for Best Screenplay.

Acclaimed writer and director Rian Johnson (Brick, Looper, The Last Jedi) pays tribute to mystery mastermind Agatha Christie in the film, a fun, modern-day murder mystery where everyone is a suspect. When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. From Harlan’s dysfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through a web of red herrings and self-serving lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan’s untimely death. With an all-star ensemble cast including Chris Evans, Ana De Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Michael Shannon, Toni Collette, LaKeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford and Jaeden Martell, KNIVES OUT is a witty and stylish whodunit guaranteed to keep audiences guessing until the very end.
