Assassin’s Creed Live-Action Series in Development at Netflix

Netflix has officially partnered with Ubisoft to produce brand new scripted content based on the game company’s worldwide best-selling action-adventure video game franchise Assassin’s Creed. The deal includes the development of the first-ever live-action series adaptation of Assassin’s Creed, which is being described as an epic and genre-bending project with Ubisoft Film & Television’s Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik serving as executive producers. The streaming service is also developing the game’s animated and anime adaptations.

“We’re excited to partner with Ubisoft and bring to life the rich, multilayered storytelling that Assassin’s Creed is beloved for,” Netfix’s VP Original Series, Peter Friedlander said in a statement (via Deadline). “From its breathtaking historical worlds and massive global appeal as one of the best selling video game franchises of all time, we are committed to carefully crafting epic and thrilling entertainment based on this distinct IP and provide a deeper dive for fans and our members around the world to enjoy.”

Assassin’s Creed is an action-adventure stealth video game which was created by Canadian game designers Patrice Désilets, and Jade Raymond along with Corey May. Ubisoft had first launched the game in 2007 where it was then followed by over 10 game sequels. The franchise has currently sold over 155 million copies worldwide since its debut, making it Ubisoft’s best-selling franchise and one of the highest-selling video game franchises of all time.

“For more than 10 years, millions of fans around the world have helped shape the Assassin’s Creed brand into an iconic franchise,” Head of Ubisoft Film & Television, Jason Altman said. “We’re thrilled to create an Assassin’s Creed series with Netflix and we look forward to developing the next saga in the Assassin’s Creed universe.”

Assassin’s Creed was first adapted into a live-action film by 20th Century Fox in 2016 where it was led by Academy Award-nominated actor Michael Fassbender along with Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson. The film had earned negative reviews from critics for its plot and writing and had a poor box office performance with only a gross of $240 million worldwide against a budget of $125 million.
