A full 20 years following its ending, a sequel series to the hit legal dramedy Ally McBeal is in the works, according to a recent report from Deadline.

The series is in early development at ABC and will be written and executive produced by Karin Gist (Mike). According to the report, the new series will follow a young black woman who joins the law firm from the original series straight out of law school.

The woman is believed, according to the report, to be the daughter of Ally McBeal’s (Calista Flockhart) D.A. roommate, Renée Raddick, who was originally played by actress Lisa Nicole Carson in the series.

It’s currently unclear who, if any, of the original actors will be returning to the series. Deadline’s report did note that Flockhart has been approached to reprise her role as the titular character in some capacity, as well as potentially executive produce the series. No official decision has been made by Flockhart, however, and likely won’t be made until scripts and more concrete plans for the series have been made.

Originally released in 1997 and running through 2002, Ally McBeal told the story of a lawyer working in the Boston law firm Cage and Fish, and chronicled the various lives and loves of other lawyers throughout the firm. The show was critically acclaimed at its time, winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series — Musical or Comedy, in 1998 and 1999, and also winning the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series in 1999.
