The Criterion Collection has a trio of additions April 26, starting with a single disc release of David Lean’s Brief Encounter, previously available in HD only as part of the company’s David Lean Directs Noel Coward box set. They’ve also got brand-new releases of both Christian Petzold’s 2014 post-WWII drama Phoenix and a set of The Kennedy Films of Robert Drew and Associates (including 1960’s Primary, 1961’s Adventures on the New Frontier, 1963’s Crisis and 1964’s Faces of November).
Shout! Factory has another two additions to its Scream Factory line with a collector’s edition of Robert Zemeckis’ supernatural comedy Death Becomes Her and the first ever HD release of Bernard L. Kowalski’s 1973 cult classic Sssssss, about a scientist who transforms himself into a snake.
Arrow Films debuts a pair of ’70s titles on Blu-ray April 26 with John Milius’ Dillinger and the 1975 blaxploitation classic Dolomite.
On the small screen, April 26 delivers (on DVD only) the long-awaited first season of The Beverly Hillbillies and the complete series of Nick at Nite’s Hot in Cleveland (with the complete season six also arriving this week separately).
April 26 also offers up quite a few Warner Archive titles. The MOD service debuts on Blu-ray Frank Tashlin’s 1954 Christmas romance Susan Slept Here as well as, on DVD only, Forbidden Hollywood X. Packed with pre-code Hollywood features, the tenth set in the series includes Guilty Hands (1931), The Mouthpiece (1932), Secrets of the French Police (1932), The Match King (1932) and Ever in My Heart (1933). They’ve also got four films starring Robert Taylor hitting DVD, including Times Square Lady (1935), A Yank at Oxford (1938), Remember (1939) and Song of Russia (1944). Finally, Marion Davies headlines both 1929’s Marianne and 1932’s Blondie of the Follies.
Digital HD titles arriving this week include director Tim Miller’s hugely successful big-screen take on Marvel’s “Merc with a Mouth” in Deadpool, the Robert De Niro and Zac Efron comedy Dirty Granpda and Michael Moore’s latest documentary, Where to Invade Next.
