Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje Talks Suicide Squad’s Killer Croc

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje plays Killer Croc in Suicide Squad.

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje promises multiple underwater scenes for his Killer Croc in Suicide Squad!

Although this year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice marked the first appearance of Ben Affleck‘s Batman, the film also established that his Bruce Wayne had been acting as Gotham City’s Dark Knight for decades. When the big screen DC Comics universe expands with David Ayer’s Suicide Squad this August, we’re going to learn even more about Batman’s past thanks to the big screen debut of a few classic Bat-villains such as Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje‘s Killer Croc.

“At the time you meet him in this film, he’s a fully fledged criminal,” the star tells ComingSoon.net. “He’s really one of the baddest criminals known to be roaming in Gotham, hence his lockup in Arkham. He’s tangled with the Batman and here he is amongst these other foes. He’s very much a formidable force at the time that you meet him.”

To suit up as Killer Croc on set, Akinnuoye-Agbaje worked with a team of special effects make up artists led by KNB EFX Group‘s Christopher Allen Nelson.

“The head and shoulders are prosthetic that were glued onto my face and then the body down was painted,” Akinnuoye-Agbaje explains. “It took about five hours to do, but it was something that was a challenge that I was up for because I wanted to set a new standard for what can be done with prosthetics. We could have easily CGI’d this, but David [Ayer] was insistent on their being an actor to bring out the soul of the character. It gave me an opportunity to show what I could do with prosthetics.”

Killer Croc debuts in Suicide Squad.

Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s research into Killer Croc pulled in material from throughout three decades of stories featuring the Batman foe and even looked at real world crocodiles to study their movements.

“I looked at all of it,” he says. “I went back to the young Waylon Jones. The animated series. I had my own take, too. I researched cannibalism. I actually went out and watched real crocodiles, too. We incorporated some of the real life fight techniques that crocodiles do when they kill their prey. The death roll.”

Speaking of death rolls, Akinnuoye-Agbaje promises that the film’s storyline will definitely Killer Croc in the water.

“Oh, you’re going to get more than one water scene!” he laughs. “I’m a croc after all, man. That’s my territory!”

Suicide Squad also stars Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto as the Joker, Will Smith as Deadshot, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, Adam Beach as Slipknot and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. There’s also mystery roles for Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, Raymond Olubowale, Alex Meraz, Jim Parrack and Common.
