Millennium Films is rebooting Sheena, Queen of the Jungle
Millennium Films is set to reboot Sheena Queen of the Jungle, according to Deadline. The comic book heroine has appeared in a TV series that ran from 1955-1956 and another in 2000. She was also the star of a 1984 film starring Tanya Roberts. Avi Lerner, Trevor Short, Joe Gatta, Boaz Davidson and John Thompson will produce as well as Lati Grobman and Christa Campbell.
Sheena, Queen of the Jungle was created by Will Eisner and Jerry Iger, and was the first female comic book character to have her own title, published in Great Britain in 1937 and in United States in 1938. (Wonder Woman got her first title in 1941.) Sheena was an orphan who lived in the jungle. She was able to communicate with wild animals and fight with weapons like spears, bows and knives. Eisner said an inspiration for the character’s name was H. Rider Haggard’s 1886 jungle-goddess novel “She.” Dynamite Entertainment has announced a new Sheena series for 2017 by Marguerite Bennett, Christina Trujillo and the artist Moritat. Like an earlier comic reboot in 2007, this story will be set in the jungles of the Amazon rather than Africa, where her story originally took place.
A Sheena, Queen of the Jungle film would give us another female-fronted comic book film. Wonder Woman has a worldwide box office total of $813.2 million. Marvel is bringing us Captain Marvel, set in the 1990s, though they haven’t done a female-fronted film yet.
Model Irish McCalla played Sheena in the 1955 TV series and Gena Lee Nolin played the role in 2000. The 1984 film starring Tanya Roberts was directed by John Guillermin.
