Star Wars: The Last Jedi tracking for a $200 million opening
Deadline has revealed news of the first tracking reports for Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘s box office which currently predict the film will open to $200 million on its opening weekend. That number puts the sequel below 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which had the highest opening weekend of all time with $248 million.
The Hollywood Reporte brings similar news on the film’s opening, reporting that Disney insiders fully expect the film to surpass Beauty and the Beast‘s $174.8 million for the highest opening weekend of the year. Should that come to pass, four of the top five opening weekends for 2017 will be Walt Disney Studios releases (also including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Thor: Ragnarok).
Should the $200 million prediction hold for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, it would put the film in the top five openings of all time, just ahead of Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron and just behind Marvel’s The Avengers. With three weeks remaining before the film opens, however, expect the box office numbers to continue to fluctuate. In the meantime, you can watch a Verizon TV spot for The Last Jedi that features some bits of all-new footage from the sequel in the player below!
In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past. The film stars Mark Hamill, the late Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern and Benicio Del Toro. Star Wars: The Last Jedi was written and directed by Rian Johnson, who, it was recently announced, will be developing a whole new Star Wars trilogy after Episode IX.
The sequel is produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman and executive produced by J.J. Abrams, Jason McGatlin, and Tom Karnowski. Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in regular and IMAX theaters on December 15, 2017.
