Catch-22 Season 1 Episode 2 Recap
In the previous episode of Hulu’s Catch-22, Doc Daneeka denied YoYo’s request to be grounded based on “Catch-22”, and Minderbinder convinced Major de Coverly to appoint him mess officer. In Catch-22 Season 1 Episode 2, the mission quotas increased even more, and Major Major received a promotion.
Major Major Major Major
Col. Cathcart and Lt. Col. Korn drove up to the guys’ basketball game to take Major Major to an officers’ meeting. Major explained that he was a sergeant. His first, middle, and last names were all “Major” because his father played a joke on his mother with the birth certificate. Korn pointed out to Cathcart that Major was scheduled for all the officers’ meetings, which Major shouldn’t be attending as a sergeant. Cathcart promoted Major to major.
Major now had an office and an assistant, Sgt. Towser. Towser went over Major’s appointments with him. Major told him to cancel all the appointments. If anyone came to see him, they would have to wait. Towser could only let them in to see him when Major was no longer there.
Tomato Profits
Now that Minderbinder was mess hall officer, his ambition grew. He arrived at the runway with a truck full of tomatoes for Col. Cathcart. Minderbinder tried convincing Cathcart to let him use a plane to move food all over Europe. He wanted Cathcart to invest in his “enterprise” and buy food from him. As an investor, Minderbinder reasoned, Cathcart would essentially be buying food for nothing. Cathcart reminded Minderbinder that the point of war was to win, not to increase profits.
The Texan
YoYo tried again to get out of flying missions. Now that Major was a major, YoYo wanted him to find a loophole for him. He’d had 2 missions left, until the quota increased again to 35, and now he had 7 missions left. YoYo talked the nurse into letting him stay in the hospital for a bit. Unfortunately, a talkative Texan irritated him enough to start a fight. The nurse kicked him out, and he was back to flying missions.
De Coverley secured a building in town. While the guys stayed there, they visited Marcello’s brothel. Nately was in love with a prostitute there and was out of money. Marcello gave him two hours free. He spoke to YoYo about how, though his allegiances changed easily depending on who is in power, he is still loyal. Marcello told YoYo that he did what he needed to survive. On his way out of the brothel, YoYo met a young girl, Ines, selling small items on the street. He bought a magnifying glass and told her to go home to her parents.
Yankee Doodle
Cathcart raised the quota yet again to 40. YoYo argued with Clevinger. He wanted to do everything he could to win the war and survive. YoYo felt that Clevinger acted out of principle without any real regard to his life. Clevinger agreed; he would hold to his principles until his dying day.
From his plane, Clevinger saw YoYo and remarked that he was helping after all. He sang Yankee Doodle to him, but after going through a cloud, the singing cut off and the plane was nowhere to be seen. Clevinger was officially missing in action after 36 hours.
