Last year, Legendary announced they would be developing new Chainsaw films inspired by Tobe Hooper’s 1974 original The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, as well as potential TV series.

Kim Henkel, who wrote and produced the original movie and directed Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, acquired the rights to the franchise. Alvarez will produce for Henkel and Legendary, and is currently searching for a filmmaker to helm the project.

The outlet notes that the film could possibly be a direct sequel to the 1974 original, though no plot details have been confirmed.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre franchise centers around Leatherface and his backwoods family, who terrorize innocent visitors trespassing their lands in the isolated Texas countryside. The original film was directed by Tobe Hooper (Poltergeist) and released in 1974. The franchise currently has a total of eight films with the most recent entry being the 2017 prequel simply titled Leatherface.
