Color Out of Space: Shudder acquires streaming rights to Nicolas Cage-led film
Shudder has announced that they’ve successfully acquired the U.S. streaming rights to director Richard Stanley’s film adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s sci-fi horror novel, Color Out of Space. Starring Academy Award-winning actor Nicolas Cage, the film had its world premiere at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival and had its theatrical release earlier this year in January 24.
In addition, the streaming service has also nabbed the streaming rights to Frank Sabatella’s supernatural film The Shed which follows the story of best friends Stan and Dommer who suddenly discovers that their is a murderous vampire living in Stan’s shed.
“We’re thrilled to be bringing Shudder members Stanley’s masterful adaptation of one of H.P. Lovecraft’s most influential stories—as well as another unforgettable Nicolas Cage performance—and Sabatella’s inventive new take on the vampire genre,” Shudder General Manager Craig Engler said in a statement (via Deadline). “The first half of 2020 has been the most successful in Shudder history, and these two great films will be part of an already-strong second half of the year, alongside titles like Scare Package, The Beach House, La Llorona, Scare Me and our upcoming original documentary on the history of Queer Horror.”

Three years have already past since the announcement of SpectreVision’s involvement in the adaptation of Lovecraft’s short story. The film was director Stanley’s comeback film since his dismissal from the 1996 H.G. Wells adaptation of The Island of Dr. Moreau, as chronicled in the brutal documentary Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley’s Island of Doctor Moreau.
Color Out of Space was produced by SpectreVision along with Daniel Noah, Lisa Whalen, Elijah Wood, and Josh C. Waller. Johnny Chang, Peter Wong, Timur Bekbosunov, Emma Lee, Stacy Jorgensen, Elisa Lleras, and Michael M. McGuire serve as executive producers.
