Primer: Who is Black Krrsantan, The Book of Boba Fett’s Wookie

Chapter 2 of The Book of Boba Fett hit Disney+ earlier today and brought new insight into the titular character’s life. “The Tribes of Tatooine” also introduced new characters who crossed paths with Fett, including a black-furred Wookie, who is very popular among Star Wars comic book fans. While it’s early to say if the newcomer’s appearance will lead to something more, let’s now delve into the Wookie’s past to learn more about him.

ComingSoon spoiler alert

In the Steph Green-directed episode, Fett and his trusted Fennec Shand visit the Major after discovering that he hired the Night Wind assassins who attempted to kill Tatooine’s new Daimyo in the latest installment. Following the encounter with the Major, Fett meets Jabba the Hutt’s cousins, a.k.a. The Twins, who are now claiming their supremacy over the territory once ruled by their relative. Their meeting in the streets of Mos Espa seems to take an ugly turn when a black Wookie comes forward from the Twins’ guard and confronts Fett. The Mandalorian bounty hunter labels the newcomer as a “gladiator” and mentions the death pits of Duur. The black Wookie just grunts, and their confrontation ends with a meaningful look from Krrsantan to Fett. The series doesn’t mention who that Wookie is, but hardcore Star Wars fans already know him as Black Krrsantan.

Who is Black Krrsantan

Krrsantan made his first Star Wars appearance in 2015’s Darth Vader comic book series, which takes place during the Galactic Civil War. On that occasion, the Wookie was introduced as a bounty hunter at the service of Jabba the Hutt. In the tale, the titular antihero meets Krrsantan on Tatooine, hiring the Wookie and a fellow bounty hunter for two different tasks. That colleague of Krrsantan was none other than Boba Fett. Krrsantan was charged to capture an agent of the Emperor and bring him alive to the Sith Lord while Fett’s bounty was a Rebel Alliance pilot.

The comics unveiled Krrsantan’s backstory later. After disgracing his people on his home planet of Kashyyyk, he voluntarily underwent gladiatorial training under the Xonti Brothers. During the training, which almost killed him, Krrsantan received permanent brass knuckles under his skin. After becoming a bounty hunter, the Wookie put his training to work and made quite a reputation for himself. His skills in battle, both in hand-to-hand combat and with weaponry, were unparalleled. On top of that, he had quite an eye-catching look, donning gold decorative material all over his body. It’s easy to understand why Krrsantan became a fan-favorite character in no time.

What’s Next

After his contract with Darth Vader expired, Krrsantan joined rogue Doctor Aphra’s dysfunctional team in a series of over-the-top adventures. Over the years, the black Wookie crossed paths with many Star Wars main characters. He clashed with Obi-Wan Kenobi, fought Chewbacca, and met Han Solo and Luke Skywalker, among others. Still, it’s unclear how he ended up working for The Twins.

Before Krrsantan’s first live-action appearance in today’s episode, he met Fett just once in the Star Wars timeline. There didn’t appear to be any bad blood between the two bounty hunters at the time. In fact, Fett praised Krrsantan as one of Jabba’s best bounty hunters when Vader hired them. The recently-released Chapter 2 hinted that a clash between them might be next. Still, that final look at Fett might lead to a surprising plot to overpower The Twins.
