Back in June, FOX cancelled the spinoff series 24 Legacy but left the door open for future iterations of the 24 franchise. Now Deadline is reporting that 24 could return as a female-led legal thriller, which FOX is developing in the same real-time format as the series starring Kiefer Sutherland that ran on the network from 2001-2010.

According to the trade, the potential new series “centers on a female prosecutor who uncovers a legal conspiracy and has to work against the clock to save a death row inmate facing imminent execution whom she had helped prosecute but may be innocent.” If the new concept is a success, 24 would take an anthology approach in a new setting with new characters each season.

The new show is being developed by the franchise’s Emmy Award-winning executive producer Howard Gordon (Homeland, 24: Live Another Day), Academy Award and Emmy Award-winning executive producer Brian Grazer, and writer-producer Jeremy Doner (The Killing). Doner and Gordon will pen the pilot script for 20th Century Fox TV and Imagine TV.

The original 24 had 24 episodes a season (sometimes showing in blocks of more than one hour), each representing an hour in the life of Jack Bauer. It won the award for Outstanding Drama Series at the 2006 Primetime Emmy Awards. After its eighth season, the show beat out Mission: Impossible and The Avengers as the longest-running U.S. espionage/counterterrorism-themed television drama in history. 24 Legacy starred Corey Hawkins, Miranda Otto and Anna Diop, chronicling a race against the clock to stop a terrorist attack on United States soil.

If 24 could return, does this sound like a good way to make the show fresh again? Let us know in the comments or tweet us @ComingSoonnet.
