Gina Rodriguez to star as Carmen Sandiego in live-action film
Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez is set to star in Netflix’s live-action feature Carmen Sandiego in the titular role. This is an extension of the brand and deal with Rodriguez after Netflix announced last year a Carmen Sandiego animated series with Rodriguez voicing the popular character.
The movie will be a standalone adventure that will “embrace the beloved 90’s property.” Andy Berman of Misher Films will act as executive producer, and no writer or director is attached to the movie yet. Rodriguez will produce Carmen Sandiego through her I Can and I Will productions alongside Kevin Misha and Caroline Fraser.
The animated Carmen Sandiego series will premiere on Netflix in 2019 after receiving a 20-episode order at 22 minutes each. The series will reportedly be educational as well as entertaining. Criminal mastermind Carmen Sandiego was the star of a number of games, working against the ACME Detective Agency as the head of V.I.L.E. The games taught kids geography and history, math and English. The character has appeared in books and other products as well.
Carmen is a thief and considers her crimes to be a game. She was also part of the ’90s children’s game show Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?. The show famously had the a cappella band Rockapella as their house band. They performed the famous theme song “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?”
Duane Capizzi (The Batman) is co-executive producer and showrunner for Carmen Sandiego, with CJ Kettler (The Tick) serving as executive producer. Visual design is by Kevin Dart (Mr. Peabody & Sherman) and Chromosphere, and the animation studio is DHX Media.
