Kevin Bacon and David Koepp Tackle You Should Have Left

Kevin Bacon and David Koepp embrace the horror in You Should Have Left

The Hollywood Reporter says that Kevin Bacon and David Koepp are teaming up with Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions to bring You Should Have Left to life on the big screen. The movie will be based on the novel of the same name.

Bacon brought the novel to Koepp’s attention. Koepp wrote the script and will be directing the film, while Bacon will star. The two have previously worked together on Stir of Echoes, a supernatural thriller. Production is set to start later this year.

You Should Have Left was written by German author Daniel Kehlmann. The story is told from the point of view of a screenwriter who holes up in a remote house in the Alps with his wife and daughter so he can work on a sequel to his big hit. The sequel is titled Marriage. There are glimmers of Stephen King’s The Shining throughout the course of the book, in which we see the writer slowly begin to descend into madness when unexplained happenings start to chip away at his sanity. All of this is delivered in a diary-like format, forcing the reader to experience the first-person descent into madness throughout the course of the novel.

David Koepp is no stranger to thrillers. In addition to Stir of Echoes, he has directed thrillers The Trigger Effect and Secret Window. He has also worked as a screenwriter on Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, and Panic Room.

Kevin Bacon has been busy. His recent credits include Cop Car, Black Mass, and Patriot’s Day. He recently wrapped a pilot for a TV version of Tremors, which Blumhouse is also producing for Syfy.

Blumhouse had a very successful year in 2017. The film Get Out was met with resounding success, garnering numerous awards, including an Academy Award. Their other films Split and Happy Death Day all opened number one at the box office and became huge successes for the production company.
