Based on the international best-selling autobiographic books Papillon and Banco, the film follows the epic story of Henri “Papillon” Charrière (Charlie Hunnam), a safecracker from the Parisian underworld who is framed for murder and condemned to life in the notorious penal colony on Devil’s Island. Determined to regain his freedom, Papillon forms an unlikely alliance with a convicted counterfeiter Louis Dega (Rami Malek), who in exchange for protection, agrees to finance Papillon’s escape.
Directed by Michael Noer (R, Northwest) and written by Aaron Guzikoswski (Prisoners). The film is set to arrive in theaters
Directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, the original Papillon was released in 1973 and adapted Henri Charrière’s 1970 autobiography. Although a criminal safecracker, Charrière (played by McQueen in the original) was arrested in the early 1930s for a murder he claims to have had no involvement with. Sentenced to life at a French penal colony, Charrière, in the film, winds up befriending a fellow inmate (played by Hoffman) and the pair together plan their escape.
The title, the french word for butterfly, refers to Charrière’s own tattoo, which earned him the nickname.
