Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic to film in Australia

Variety reports that director Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming Elvis Presley biopic has officially set its filming location in Queensland, Australia. he decision was made in a recent meeting in London between Luhrmann and Annastacia Palaszczuk, Premier and Minister for Trade, of the Australian state of Queensland.  HoTwever, Further details about the film’s title and production date are still being kept under wraps.

“The production alone is expected to employ 900 Queenslanders in behind-the-scenes roles, including set construction, catering and transportation, and inject more than $105 million (US$74 million) into the local economy.” said  Annastacia Palaszczuk, Premier and Minister for Trade, of the Australian state of Queensland in a statement.

“Australia continues to be one of the great filmmaking locations in the world, where we’ve created everything from Paris cabarets to the Jazz Age in New York,” Luhrmann added.“Along with (producer and costume designer, Catherine Martin) and my entire team, I am committed to not only making the film, but also developing Queensland’s creative culture and supporting filmmakers, storytellers and artists of all kinds, in the same manner that we ourselves were supported and mentored early in our careers.”

Starring Academy Award-winning actor Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump), The film will follow the story of the legendary musician’s life and music, from his rise to fame, unprecedented stardom, legacy and massive influence to many people. Hanks will be portraying the role of Colonel Tom Parker,  Elvis Presley’s manager who was responsible for various milestones in the King of Rock’s singing and acting career.

The role will join Hanks’ long list of roles based on real-life people, including Jim Lovell in Apollo 13, Ben Bradlee in The Post, Chesley Sullenberger in Sully, Captain Richard Phillips in Captain Phillips, Walt Disney in Saving Mr. Banks, and Mister Rogers in the upcoming A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood for Sony. Hanks’ other upcoming projects include Toy Story 4 and the war drama Greyhound, based on the novel by C.S. Forester.

The currently untitled Elvis biopic will be co-written by Luhrmann, who will direct, and BAFTA winner Craig Pearce (Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge!). Previous reports states that the director is seeking out a newcomer to play the role of Presley and that the budget for the project is still being ironed out. Luhrmann hopes to get production started by next year.
