Even though Game Freak just released Pokémon Legends: Arceus in January, the studio has already announced its next set of games to celebrate Pokémon Day. The two titles are Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, which both welcome in a new generation of Pokémon. The two twin titles will be coming out on the Nintendo Switch sometime in “late 2022.”

The Pokémon Company revealed the games through a trailer, which showed off the region, the three starter Pokémon, and more. The three starters are named (from left to right) Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly. As hinted by its architecture, the title will also be taking place in an area inspired by the Iberian Peninsula, which covers both Spain and Portugal. The art for the trainers also came out, both with uniforms that imply that the player character might be going to school of some kind.
The trailer’s description also calls it an open-world game, meaning this could be more open than typical mainline entries. However, some have criticized the Switch for its performance or visual fidelity in the bigger regions found in both Arceus and the Sword and Shield games, meaning Game Freak will have to do more adjusting to get the aging console ready for a more open title.

The presentation also had some updates on some Pokémon games that are currently out. Pokémon Go is adding creatures from the Alola region on March 1. Raihan, Flygon, Skyla, and Tornadus are coming to Pokémon Masters EX. Duraludon is making its way to Pokémon Unite along with new limited-time battles. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pearl owners can go into the game and grab the Shaymin Pokémon for a limited time. Pokémon Legends: Arceus also just received a big update that adds new content. There will also be a new Pokémon anime web series that’s based in the Hisui region, the region from Arceus.
