Director Neill Blomkamp’s movie based on PlayStation driving franchise Gran Turismo now has a confirmed release date thanks to a behind-the-scenes update from Deadline. The adaption is under the Columbia Pictures banner and will release on August 11, 2023, should everything go smoothly. Deadline also dug up a plot description that explains how a Hollywood studio could adapt a pure driving experience to the narrative realm.

The movie will reportedly follow a teenage Gran Turismo player who applies their skills to competitions the world over on the road to becoming a real race car driver. It’s a peculiar concept, but it’s likely one of the few viable ways to adapt the series.
Gran Turismo 7 is the latest game in the franchise, releasing on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in March of this year. The game received high scores from the reviewing press and impressed fans with its attention to detail and its expansive gameplay options. It was criticized for the grind needed to get its vehicles, but Polyphony Digital has slowly been addressing those concerns.

Sony’s stable of gaming properties is making headway in Hollywood as part of a renewed push for video game adaptions on TV and the big screen. Uncharted hit theaters earlier this year and, despite some tepid reviews, made over $400 million at the box office. Sony is also adapting The Last of Us, Horizon, and Twisted Metal into TV series, too.
