Rick and Morty Co-Creator Justin Roiland has revealed the next game he is making with his team over at Squanch Games and, it looks about as absurd as the two’s prior collaborations. High On Life is a new first-person shooter that takes a fresh high school graduate and turns them into an intergalactic bounty hunter in order to save the world. It’s releasing on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in October 2022.

This planet-hopping adventure begins because of the villain Garmantuous who is using humanity as his new drug. And being a shooter, it will have a variety of upgrades and guns. Each gun will even have its own unique personality and “special gameplay” as they have their own thoughts on the game’s story, meaning players will never truly be alone. It’s much more ambitious than the studio’s past games and Studio Director Mike Fridley talked about taking that next step.
“We like to flex our creative muscles and try new things. If you look at our previous work, I think you’ll pick up on that,” said Fridley. “At the same time, Justin’s unique comedic voice ties all of our games together. We want fans to be able to look at one of our games and immediately know that it’s from Squanch. They know it’ll be funny, but that it’ll also be a great experience that’s fun to play. High On Life is a first-person shooter, and we’re taking what we love about that genre and pushing it in a really squanchy direction.”

Roiland also gave a statement on the game.
“I wanted to make games that I wanted to play, and that was the spark that sort of lit the fire of Squanch Games,” said Roiland. “Then we shipped Trover, we shipped Accounting+, and now we’re on this absolute dream game that we were kind of building towards this whole time.”
Roiland started Squanch Games in 2016 as Squanchtendo, a name Nintendo wasn’t pleased with, which is what led to the name change. The team has developed a few games since then, like Accounting+, Dr. Splorchy Presents: Space Heroes, and, most recently, Trover Saves the Universe. While Trover was also playable outside of VR, High On Life will be the team’s first non-VR game.
