Demian Bichir (The Nun) is joining Andrea Riseborough (Waco) in Sony’s reimagining of the horror classic The Grudge, Variety confirmed. The reboot was written by Nicolas Pesce (The Eyes of My Mother) who will also direct the film.

Sam Raimi, who produced the first two installments of the American versions of the horror trilogy, is producing alongside Rob Tapert for Ghost House. Regarding the project, Raimi stated: “We are so excited about this new adaptation. We went back to the original source material to deliver a relentless supernatural thrill ride that explores the horrors of American suburbia.”

The original 2004 American version starred Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire SlayerCruel Intentions) as an exchange student who moves to Tokyo and finds herself tormented by spirits of the dead. Gellar returned for a 2006 sequel, but not for the third film, which went direct to home video. The Japanese Ju-On franchise is currently at nine feature films.

Nathan Kahane and Erin Westerman are executive producing for Good Universe alongside Schuyler Weiss, Roy Lee, and Doug Davison. Romel Adam is overseeing the movie for Ghost House and Brady Fujikawa is overseeing for Good Universe. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions recently picked up worldwide rights to The Grudge reboot.

Bichir is also set to star in ABC’s The Grand Hotel, which he is producing alongside his co-star Eva Longoria, on top of his work in the upcoming movies The Nun and Chaos Walking.

The Grudge reboot will begin shooting in May.
