Stellan Skarsgård and Emily Watson cast in HBO’s Chernobyl

Stellan Skarsgård (RiverAvengers: Age of Ultron) and Emily Watson (The DresserThe Theory of Everything) have been cast in the miniseries Chernobyl, a co-production between HBO and Sky.

The two veteran actors will be co-starring with Jared Harris (The CrownMad Men) in the five-part miniseries about the Chernobyl nuclear power plant explosion on April 26, 1986. The show zooms in on the lives of the men and women who acted heroically to mitigate the catastrophic damage that devastated the former Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.

Skarsgård will take on the role of Boris Shcherbina, the Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers and head of the Bureau for Fuel and Energy of the USSR.

Watson will be Soviet nuclear physicist Ulana Khomyuk, dedicated to understanding the cause of the man-made disaster to ensure it never happens again.

Harris will portray Valery Legasov, the Kremlin-appointed scientist investigating the accident.

Johan Renck will be directing Chernobyl based on the script by Craig Mazin, who will also serve as an executive producer. Sharing exec producing duties with Mazin are Carolyn Strauss and Jane Featherstone. Chris Fry will be co-executive producing along with Renck. The miniseries is produced by Sister Pictures and the Mighty Mint under the HBO and Sky co-production banner.
