Danny Boyle reveals prequel series to The Beach is in the works
Speaking with The Independent (via JoBlo), Danny Boyle has revealed his trippy 2000 drama The Beach may be getting the prequel treatment thanks to actress/producer Amy Seimetz (Pet Sematary), who has begun adapting the project for TV. Obviously not much was revealed by Boyle during an interview promoting Yesterday, but he did mention the series will be set 20 years after the events of the first film … but it’s still a prequel?

“The Beach may come back,” Boyle said. “[Seimetz] has taken The Beach and made a prequel for television. It’s the same character but it’s set now, so 20 years later – it’s a bit of a headf***.
That sounds both perplexing and fascinating.
“It’s intriguing when you see it,” Boyle continued. “I’ve read the first two scripts. I don’t know if they’ll have the courage to do it at FX, but you never know.”

The Beach, based on the book by Alex Garland, starred Leonardo DiCaprio in his first stint post-Titanic fame (not counting The Man in the Iron Mask or Woody Allen’s Celebrity, which were produced before he was truly Leonardo DiCaprio) as a man named Richard who ventures with a couple to an island in the Gulf of Thailand, which serves as paradise to a small community. The group encounters sharks, drugs, drug farmers, sex, betrayal and angry surfers all the while trying to keep their sanctuary a secret.
The film received terrible reviews upon its release, but still managed to score $144 million at the worldwide box office. And, if nothing else, gave us this truly memorable scene:
