Spider-Man: No Way Home Tops $1 Billion Worldwide, Dominates Domestic Box Office

Spider-Man: No Way Home continued to gobble up the holiday box office, earning a spectacular $81.5 million over the 3-day holiday period, raising its domestic total to $467.3 million after just two weeks in theaters, per Deadline. That number represents a -69% decline, but keep in mind that Christmas landing on Saturday clearly took away some of Spidey’s business. The weekend total marks the third-highest Christmas Day ever behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($49.3 million) and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ($32.1 million).

Of note, the trade mentions that Spidey has sold 38 million tickets, which is astonishing.

Worldwide, the superhero film surpassed $1.05 billion, making it the first film of the pandemic era to reach the billion-dollar milestone, and obviously the top-grossing film of 2021. The flick is the third fast movie to hit $1 billion globally behind Avengers: Infinity War (11 days) and Avengers: Endgame (5 days).

Coming in second on the domestic front was the animated sequel Sing 2, which collected $23.76 million over its first three days and $41 million over the 5-day holiday period. The film collected $8.42 million on Christmas Day, which was 61% higher than its Christmas Eve total, and looks like it will enjoy a successful run with families flocking to the musical.

Meanwhile, Lana Wachowski’s The Matrix Resurrections earned just a 3-day $12 million/5-day $22.5 million in its first week, far below studio estimates. There’s a lot to unpack here, but the film, which earned middling reviews and has so far divided audiences, also saw its attendance hampered by a day-and-date HBO Max release, its R-rating, and the Christmas holiday. Plus, No Way Home is soaking up a lot of its business.

Still, considering its brand name, and star Keanu Reeves, whose John Wick films have done big business, one would expect higher numbers for a sequel to the groundbreaking Matrix trilogy.

Elsewhere, the Kurt Warner drama American Underdog took in $6.2 million from 2,813 theaters, while The King’s Man managed just $10 million over the 5-day weekend. Finally, Denzel Washington’s A Journal for Jordan totaled $2.2 million after opening on Saturday.
