The Black Phone is directed by Scott Derrickson from a screenplay he co-wrote with long-time collaborator C. Robert Cargill, based on the award-winning short story by Joe Hill from his New York Times bestseller 20th Century Ghosts.

“The film tells the story of Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, who is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement,” reads the official synopsis. “When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.”

The film is led by Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke along with up-and-coming young actors Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw. Joining them are James Ransone, Jeremy Davies, Brady Hepner, Jacob Moran, and Jordan Isaiah White. It reunites Derrickson, and Cargill with Ethan Hawke and James Ransone, who all worked together on 2012’s Sinister.
