Robert Rodriguez’s Female-Led Zorro Nabs 6-Script Order at The CW

According to Deadline, The CW has officially ordered six additional scripts for Robert Rodriguez’s long-in-development series adaptation of the iconic masked vigilante Zorro, which will be led by a female protagonist. The script order is the network’s way of exploring a new development technique for potential shows.

The project was originally set up at NBC, with Sofia Vergara previously attached to executive produce. However, it was confirmed earlier this year that the female-led Zorro series has been moved to The CW, with writer-director Rebecca Rodriguez (Doom Patrol) now joining brother Robert Rodriguez to develop the new incarnation.

Based on the character created by Johnston McCulley in 1919, the series will feature a female lead taking on the mantle of the classic hero. It is expected to center around a young Latinx woman seeking vengeance for her father’s murder joins a secret society and adopts the outlaw persona of Zorro.

It will be written and executive produced by Robert Rodriguez, Rebecca Rodriguez, and showrunner Sean Tretta, with Rebecca Rodriguez also serving as a director. Executive producers are Ben Silverman, Howard T. Owens, & Rodney Ferrell for Propagate, Geoff Clark, Jay Weisleder, and Eric Bromberg along with President and CEO of Zorro Productions, Inc., John Gertz.

This marks the second time that Rodriguez was involved in a Zorro project. The first was when he was attached to direct the Antonio Banderas-led The Mask of Zorro sequel film but decided to leave the project due to budgeting conflicts with TriStar Pictures.
