James Gunn Discusses How Avengers Movies Used Guardians of the Galaxy Cast

The Guardians of the Galaxy cast are no strangers to appearing in other Marvel Studios films and projects. However, according to director James Gunn, it isn’t always fun seeing the group perform in other films.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn spoke about the prospect of handing off the Guardians now that he’s the co-CEO of DC Studios. When speaking about the group’s appearance in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Gunn noted that things were done that he necessarily wouldn’t have with the Guardians of the Galaxy cast.

“They did some things that I wouldn’t have wanted,” said Gunn, who also mentioned that Star-Lord would have killed Gamora if she asked him to in Avengers: Infinity War and wouldn’t have punched Thanos in the face in the same film, a scene that became infamous amongst fans, who blamed Star-Lord for Thanos’ snap because of that moment.

Elsewhere in the interview, members of the Guardians of the Galaxy cast also spoke about potentially working with new filmmakers. Pom Klementieff — who plays Mantis in the film series — said that she “can’t imagine” playing the character with someone else writing her words.

“I can’t imagine playing Mantis with someone else writing the words,” said Klementieff, even revealing that she and star Chris Pratt would call Gunn during their time on the Avengers films to make sure their characters were being handled right. . “I was being given directions, and I was like, ‘I think I’m going to call James,’ ” Klementieff said.

For those who may not have seen the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, Gunn did take to social media to share that the upcoming third movie will explain most of what happened to the crew, especially Nebula, who went through a complete character change and is now a fellow hero.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to premiere on May 5, 2023.
