Designated Survivor Season 3 Episode 3 Recap
In the previous episode of Netflix’s Designated Survivor, Lorraine suggested that Aaron consider being Kirkman’s running mate, and Hannah and Dr. Mays arrived at an empty biohacker’s lab. In Designated Survivor Season 3 Episode 3, Emily joined Kirkman’s campaign, while Hannah and Eli met a woman who experienced a strange flu.
Privacy
Moss was responsible for a political ad about Kirkman’s transgender sister-in-law, Sasha. It was toxic for the right, because of his support for her, and the left, because they felt he’d been hiding her. Kirkman had been trying to preserve her privacy, but Sasha was getting harassed because of it. He suggested that she visit, so they can be seen together in public.
While at the White House, they had an honest talk. Sasha decided that she needed to be there for Penny now that Alex was gone. Penny had just gotten her first period and hadn’t told anyone. Sasha gave Penny the talk. She would be sticking around for a while.
Kirkman’s event was categorized as a rally, not a convention, so they were denied free network air time. Instead, Kirkman delivered his speech, live-streamed free on the internet. He committed to establishing a cabinet office to monitor online privacy.
Political Moves
Emily joined Kirkman’s campaign, much to Lorraine’s dismay. Lorraine wanted to leak that Moss tested positive for the Alzheimer’s gene. She had obtained his DNA and tested it secretly while she was with him at the AIPAC event. Kirkman forbade it, but it leaked anyway. Lorraine swore that she hadn’t and realized that it had been Emily.
Lorraine met with Aaron to discuss possibly running for Vice President. He was hesitant but still interested. He went through an invasive vetting process and finally Kirkman offered it to him. Aaron asked if it had to do with him being Latino, and Kirkman was honest. Though it could possibly be part of it, he promised that his campaign would be respectful about it.
Insulin
Harper gave Isabel the task of researching walk-in rights. The government could seize control of drug patents that were developed with public money but purchased by private companies if not enough people who needed it could get access to it. After speaking with an expert, they landed on insulin. Isabel brought a major pharmaceutical CEO to the White House. She showed him a video of a woman explaining that her son died because he’d` rationed his insulin. Isabel demanded the drug be sold at a certain price or else they would seize the patent and grant it to a competitor.
Smallpox
The next day at the lab, Hannah and Dr. Mays found strange markings on the wall. He realized someone had used a chemical reaction with bleach to draw the shape of smallpox. After rushing to get a smallpox antivirus, they interviewed a pregnant doctor at a clinic where several people, including herself contracted a bad flu. Everyone who was sick suddenly got better, but the pregnant ones eventually miscarried.
Hannah and Dr. Mays believe a nurse there had infected everyone. They think the bird flu was spliced with smallpox to make it more contagious.
