Godzilla is king of the box office with $179 million worldwide
Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters opened at the #1 spot at the domestic box office, debuting with $49 million. Internationally the film opened with $130 million for a worldwide total of $179 million. Though the film saw a significant drop in the US as the 2014 Godzilla reboot opened with $93 million in May of 2014, the film opened higher internationally than the previous movie ($130 million to $103 million in 2014). The film had a similar drop domestically and rise internationally compared to Kong: Skull Island, which opened with $61 million in the US but $81.6 million internationally. Godzilla and Kong will do battle in 2020.
Aladdin slipped into second placed, dropping 54% and bringing in $42 million domestically for a US total of $185 million. Internationally the film added another $78.3 million for an international total of $260.9 million and a worldwide haul of $445.9 million. The film has already surpassed Dumbo, the other live-action Disney remake released earlier this year.
Paramount’s Elton John biopic Rocketman opened in third place, debuting with $25 million domestically. The film opened to half the domestic opening of last year’s hit music biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody ($51 million in November 2018). Internationally the movie brought $19.2 million, giving it an international total of $32.1 million and a global total $56.2 million.
Universal’s latest micro-budget collaboration with Blumhouse Productions, Ma, opened with $18 million domestically and another $2.8 million internationally for a global total of $21.06 million.
Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum fell to fifth place, bringing in $11.1 million domestically and another $12.7 million internationally. The film’s US haul now sits at $125.7 million, the first to crack $100 million domestically, and $95.9 million internationally for a global total of $221.7 million to date, the first to crack $200 million worldwide.
