In a statement made to TMZ, Chadwick’s brother, Derrick Boseman, says that he doesn’t view his brother not winning as a snub because every actor nominated was excellent and deserving of the award. He went on to say that the family wasn’t upset that Boseman didn’t win and that they all wished Hopkins, who won the award for his work in The Father, the best because he believes Hopkins would have done that had Boseman won.
Despite the loss, Derrick said that his brother never placed too much value on the Oscars, referring to them as “a campaign” more than anything. While he would have loved the award as an achievement, Boseman says that they weren’t obsessing over it.

In the lead-up to the awards, Boseman received both the Golden Globe for Best Actor and the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Actor for his work in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. This led to many thinking that Boseman would win the Oscar for his role, and after he lost, many celebrities voiced their displeasure because he wasn’t honored with the award.
