Florence Pugh to Lead Film Adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s The Wonder

According to Deadline, Oscar-nominated actress Florence Pugh has officially signed on for the leading role in the upcoming film adaptation of author Emma Donoghue’s psychological thriller novel titled The Wonder. Production is expected to begin later this year in August in Ireland.

This marks the second time that one of Donoghue’s novels is getting a movie treatment, with the first one being Lenny Abrahamson’s acclaimed 2015 drama, Room which earned the author an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Set in 1859, Irish Midlands, The Wonder is described as a tale of two strangers who transform each other’s lives and a story of love pitted against evil. It centers around an English nurse, Lib Wright (Pugh), who gets summoned to a tiny village to observe what some are claiming as a medical anomaly or a miracle – a girl said to have survived without food for months. Tourists have flocked to the cabin of an eleven-year-old, and a journalist has come down to cover the sensation.

The film is directed by Sebastián Lelio (Gloria Bell, A Fantastic Woman) from a script he co-written with Donoghue and Alice Birch (Normal People). It is a production by House Production and Element with Ed Guiney and Tessa Ross.

The Wonder film adaptation will be added to Pugh’s growing list of upcoming film projects, including Marvel Studios’ long-awaited Black Widow film; Olivia Wilde’s thriller pic Don’t Worry Darling; Zach Braff’s drama pic Good Person; Universal Pictures’ murder mystery film The Maid; Disney+’s Hawkeye series; and Apple’s sci-fi film Dolly.
