HBO Max has released the official Hacks trailer for the upcoming comedy series, starring Emmy-winning actress Jean Smart and newcomer Hannah Einbinder. The video features a millennial comedy writer as she finds an unlikely mentor in a veteran comedian who needs to appeal to a younger crowd in order to save her Las Vegas residency. The series is scheduled to make its debut on Thursday, May 13, with the first two episodes.

Hacks explores a dark mentorship that forms between Deborah Vance, a legendary Las Vegas comedian, and an entitled, outcast 25-year-old, who was unwillingly enlisted by Deborah’s agent to help her write jokes that will appeal to a younger audience.
The series will be led by Hannah Einbinder and Frasier alum Jean Smart, who previously received her eighth Emmy nomination for her acclaimed performance in HBO’s limited series Watchmen. They will be joined by series regular Carl Clemons-Hopkins along with recurring guest stars Kaitlin Olson, Christopher McDonald, Paul W. Downs, Mark Indelicato, Poppy Liu, Johnny Sibilly, Meg Stalter and Rose Abdoo.

Hacks is created and executive produced by Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky, who are also serving as showrunners. Executive producers are Emmy winners Michael Schur through Fremulon, David Miner for 3 Arts Entertainment and Morgan Sackett.
