The chances of a video game based on The Matrix Resurrections are incredibly slim, but it sounds like a video game-adjacent ‘Experience‘ is on the way. Users have found something called The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience on the PlayStation Network backend. Warner Bros. has not confirmed or denied its existence.

A Reddit user named the_andshrew found the image and posted it on r/GamingLeaksAndRumors. The post simply states its title, existence on PlayStation 5, and supposed key art. No sort of release date was given, but Resurrections is coming out on December 22, 2021 so that might serve as a decent indicator of a general release window. It will also be in Unreal Engine 5, which is the newest version of Epic Games’ popular engine that the company showed off in May 2020.

While details are slim, The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience will likely be an interactive tour of some kind that will take users through various sets from or inspired by the film. In other words, don’t expect a traditional video game. And given how it is advertising Unreal Engine 5, it’ll probably attempt to be a visual showpiece, especially if it is a current-gen exclusive.
PlayStation consoles have had a whole host of “experiences” before and a few that have tied into films, too. Sony released a few VR experiences for Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Radiohead’s recent Kid A Mnesia also just hit PS5 consoles and PCs. Sony also acquired a minority stake in Epic Games in July 2020, so seeing the two collaborate on this makes more sense.
