Don Mancini’s Chucky series officially begins production

Creator Don Mancini took to Twitter to share a new teaser confirming that production on SYFY and USA Network’s long-in development Chucky series has finally begun after getting delayed last year due to the ongoing pandemic. In his post, Mancini also revealed that the project is targeting to make its debut this fall. The teaser, which you can check out below, also featured the episode title for the first episode which is written and directed by Mancini.

The news of the start of production comes a week after it was announced that Fiona Dourif had signed on to reprise her role as Nica Pierce from 2013’s Curse of Chucky and 2017’s Cult of Chucky, and a few weeks after genre vet Devon Sawa (Final Destination) had joined the cast.

The series will see a vintage Chucky doll turning up at a suburban yard sale in an idyllic American town, which is thrown into chaos as a series of horrifying murders begin to expose the town’s hypocrisies and secrets. Meanwhile, the arrival of enemies — and allies — from his past threaten to expose the truth behind the killings, as well as the demon doll’s untold origins as a seemingly ordinary child who somehow became this notorious monster.

Chucky will see the return of franchise alums Brad Dourif and Jennifer Tilly, reprising their roles as the voice of the titular killer doll and Tiffany respectively, as well as newcomers Zackary Arthur (Transparent), Teo Briones (Ratched), Bjorgvin Arnarson (PEN15) and Alyvia Alyn Lind (The Young and the Restless).

In addition to helming the pilot and showrunning the series, creator Mancini will serve as executive producer alongside franchise producer and doll creator David Kirschner and Nick Antosca via his Eat the Cat production label. The series marks Mancini’s second collaboration with SYFY after working as a producer on the horror anthology series Channel Zero and penning three episodes.

In 1988, Chucky slashed his way into the pop culture zeitgeist with the premiere of Child’s Play directed and co-written by Tom Holland. The international sensation spawned six sequels, all of which Mancini wrote and Kirschner produced. In 2019, Orion Pictures had released a remake of the 1988 film which featured Mark Hamill as the voice of Chucky.
