In this stranger than fiction saga, the story centers on A’Ziah King, aka ZOLA, a Detroit waitress who strikes up a friendship with a customer, Stefani, over their shared love of pole dancing. Stefani seduces Zola to join in a weekend of dancing and partying in Florida just a day after exchanging numbers, and while it initially seems like a glamorous trip full of “hoeism” it rapidly transforms into a 48-hour journey involving Stefani’s violent and nameless pimp, her idiot boyfriend Derrek, some Tampa gangster and other unexpected adventures.
The film stars Taylour Paige (Boogie, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) in the titular role alongside Riley Keough (The Girlfriend Experience, Logan Lucky), Nicholas Braun (The Big Ugly, Succession) as Derrek, Colman Domingo (Fear the Walking Dead, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) as X, Ari’el Stachel (Jessica Jones, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) and Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton, Kong: Skull Island).
Celebrated director Janicza Bravo (Gregory Go Boom, Lemon) helms the biographical dramedy on a script co-written by her and Jeremy O. Harris (Euphoria). The film had first begun development in 2016 with James Franco (The Disaster Artist) directing and producing the project, though amidst the wave of sexual misconduct allegations against him, he was replaced by Bravo as A24 acquired it. His brother, Dave (The Rental), is attached as a producer on the film.
