Greg Nicotero & Robert Rodriguez remaking Creature From the Black Lagoon?
In an interview with Comic Book, The Walking Dead and Creepshow producer Greg Nicotero claims that he and filmmaker Robert Rodriguez (Alita: Battle Angel, Planet Terror) have been toying with remaking Universal Pictures’ classic monster film The Creature From the Black Lagoon.
“I think for any creature/monster kid, ‘Creature from the Black Lagoon’ is the quintessential monster movie,” Nicotero said. “I think Robert Rodriguez and I always talk about like, ‘Hey, man. Maybe we should co-direct a Creature from the Black Lagoon movie,’ because he and I have identical tastes. We love ‘Jaws.’ We love ‘The Thing.’ We love ‘Escape from New York’ and ‘Blade Runner.’ We toy with the idea of like, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if we remade Creature from the Black Lagoon?’ And I know they’ve been trying to do it forever, but, for me, that’s the quintessential Universal Monster movie.”

Universal released the original Creature From the Black Lagoon in 1954, using the 3D technology of the day. It follows a geological expedition to the Amazon and the subsequent discovery of a menacing “Gill-man”, dating back to man’s prehistoric origins. It was followed by sequels Revenge of the Creature (1955) and The Creature Walks Among Us (1956).
Directed by Jack Arnold, The Creature From the Black Lagoon was written by Harry Essex and Arthur A. Ross. The latter scribe is the father of The Hunger Games director Gary Ross who, some years ago, turned in his own draft for the remake. Other directors attached over the years included John Landis, John Carpenter, Ivan Reitman, Breck Eisner and Carl Eric Rinsch. A Creature film as part of the planned Dark Universe was developed but scrapped along with that shared universe concept. Guillermo del Toro briefly developed a remake with Universal, but after his pitch was rejected he used the same Gill Man ideas for the original film The Shape of Water, which won the Oscar for Best Picture.
