NYC’s Paris Theater reopens with Mank and more!

The Netflix-owned Paris Theater, a New York City landmark since 1948 and the only existing single screen theater in the city, is presenting David Fincher’s Mank in an exclusive 35mm engagement starting this Friday, April 2.

Although its story hinges on screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz’s collaboration with Orson Welles on Citizen Kane, and Kane provides Fincher’s stylistic inspiration, the real core of Mank is its depiction of a maverick artist in the world of 1930s Hollywood and the relationship between Mankiewicz (Gary Oldman), Marion Davies (Amanda Seyfried), and William Randolph Hearst (Charles Dance). Mank‘s Oscar nominations are for Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actress, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, Original Score, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Sound.

The historic Paris Theater (where Orson Welles’s Othello premiered in 1955) is the only place in New York City to see Mank in 35mm.

The Paris has also unveiled their first filmmaker event, a day devoted to Ramin Bahrani, the acclaimed Iranian-American New York City-based writer/director, who is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, for The White Tiger. Things kick off on Saturday, April 10 at noon with a 35mm screening of Martin Scorsese’s GoodFellas, selected by Bahrani as a key influence on his work. GoodFellas will be introduced by film critic Glenn Kenny, author of the new book “Made Men: The Story of GoodFellas.” A book signing with Kenny follows the screening.

At 3:30 p.m. is a showing of The White Tiger, followed by a conversation with Bahrani. The White Tiger follows the epic journey of a poor Indian driver who must use his wit and cunning to break free from servitude to his rich masters and rise to the top of the heap, and is based on Aravind Adiga’s New York Times best seller & Man Booker Prize-winning novel. At 7:15 p.m. is Bahrani’s 2007 critically acclaimed Chop Shop, set in a ramshackle neighborhood amidst the auto repair shops of Willets Point, Queens.

Ramin Bahrani on GoodFellas, and its influence on The White Tiger“I first saw Martin Scorsese’s GoodFellas in a cinema when I was fifteen, and the film has been seared into my mind ever since. I was pulled into its epic tale of complex anti-heroes and biting dark comedy. I saw how Scorsese mixed a documentary-style attention to detail with dynamic camera movements, and then wove it together with an evocative soundtrack and unforgettable voice-over narration. And the film refused to pass judgements or form moral conclusions about its deeply flawed characters. This masterpiece was a constant source of inspiration while writing The White Tiger.”
