The National Treasure series is set to explore timely issues of identity, community, historical authorship and patriotism, told from the point of view of Jess Morales, a twenty-year-old DREAMer who, with her diverse group of friends, sets off on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover her mysterious family history and recover lost treasure.
The project hails from the original films’ producer Jerry Bruckheimer and the Wibberleys, who are all serving as executive producers. It is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer Television with ABC Signature as its studio.

Directed by Jon Turteltaub, National Treasure had its theatrical debut in 2004 where it earned a worldwide gross of $347 million. It starred Oscar winner Nicolas Cage, Diane Kruger, Jon Voight, and Justin Bartha. The film centered around Ben Gates as he tries to find the fabled treasure that was hidden by the Knights Templar and the Freemasons. Due to the film’s success, it was then followed by 2007’s National Treasure: The Book of Secrets which continued to follow Ben, who is now trying to clear his family’s name when great-great grandfather was accused as a key conspirator to the Abraham Lincoln assassination. The sequel was again a commercial success for Disney and had grossed over $459 million at the worldwide box office.
Before the development of the upcoming series came to be, Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer have been developing the third installment to National Treasure since 2008. Cage previously expressed interest to return, believing that the new story should take them international. The most recent update about the project was last year, when Bruckheimer confirmed that the third film is still in development with the script still being written.
