Margaret Atwood’s Maddaddam trilogy series in the works at Hulu
Ahead of the upcoming debut of the fourth season of The Handmaid’s Tale, Hulu is continuing to strengthen their partnership with acclaimed author Margaret Atwood as they plan to develop a new series, based on another one of Atwood’s popular dystopian stories titled Maddaddam, according to Deadline. Michael Leslie (The Little Drummer Girl) has signed on to the project to pen the pilot and serve as an executive producer.

This marks the third collaboration between Atwood and Hulu as they have also previously announced the development of the series adaptation of The Testaments which was the best-selling author’s 2019 follow-up novel to 1985’s The Handmaid’s Tale novel.
First published in 2003, Maddaddam is actually the third novel in Atwood’s dystopian trilogy which was preceded by 2003’s Oryx and Crake and 2009’s The Year of the Flood. The trilogy novel was first described as a speculative fiction and adventure romance. The apocalyptic thriller story deals with genetic reinvention, corporate domination and young love and centers around the characters of Crake, Oryx, Ren, and Toby.

The books’ official synopsis reads as follows:
In Oryx and Crake, a man struggles to survive in a world where he may be the last human. In search of answers, he embarks on a journey through the lush wilderness that was so recently a great city, until powerful corporations took mankind on an uncontrolled genetic engineering ride. In The Year of the Flood the long-feared waterless flood has occurred, altering Earth as we know it and obliterating most human life. And in Maddaddam a small group of survivors band together with the Children of Crake: the gentle, bioengineered quasi-human species who will inherit this new earth. Set in a darkly plausible future shaped by plagues, floods, and genetic engineering, these three novels take us from the end of the world to a brave new beginning. Thrilling, moving, and a triumph of imagination, the Maddaddam Trilogy confirms the ultimate endurance of humanity, community, and love.

The Maddaddam series adaptation will hail from Paramount Television Studios and will be executive produced by Lesslie and Atwood. Anonymous Content’s David Kanter and Bard Dorros are also serving as executive producers along with Makemake Entertainment’s Angus Wall and Kent Kubena.
It has also been confirmed that Leslie is no longer a part of Peacock’s upcoming Battlestar Galactica reboot series after nearly a year since it was revealed that he was attached to develop the project. Leslie’s notable writing credits include Macbeth and Assassins’ Creed.
