DC Comics Talent Reveal Their Favorite Halloween Horrors

DC Comics Talent Reveal Their Favorite Halloween Horrors

DC Comics was ghoulish enough to ask some of their top tier talent Cursed Comics Cavalcade #1 (now in comics stores!) what their favorite Halloween horror movies are. Check out their answers below, along with scenes from the new title!

Horror! Death! Uh…Face-punching! In Cursed Comics Cavalcade #1 witness ten all-new stories that promise to be the most terrifying, most shocking and most horrific comic that DC Comics has ever published! (Hyperbole much?) Batman, Wonder Woman, Guy Gardner, Swamp Thing, Zatanna and more of your favorite heroes face unspeakable horrors from the streets of Gotham City to the darkest sectors of the universe.

Tim Seeley, writer of “The Spread” featuring Swamp Thing:

Halloween (1978) – There’s just something so perfect about this movie – the platonic ideal of a horror movie.

Alien (1979) – Occasionally considered primarily a sci-fi film, but this movie is the slasher formula through and through.

Dawn of the Dead (1978) – Obviously 1978 was a really good year for horror movies! I love the subversiveness of this movie and its criticism of consumerism, at the very beginning, of ‘mall culture.’

Evil Dead 2 (1987) – So over the top, so manic, so energetic, and it solidifies the character of Ash Williams, one of my single favorite “”heroes”” of all time.

Lost Boys (1987) – My favorite vampire movie of all time. Hilarious, dark, sexy. And the best damn soundtrack ever.”

Kyle Hotz, artist of “The Spread” featuring Swamp Thing:

Asking me to pick my favorite horror movie is like asking me which one of my kids I love most! I mean, I might be able to whittle it down to a list of fifty or seventy five, but even that would be a Herculean task. If I had to pick one, just one all time best, I’d probably have to go with Curse of the Demon.

Kenny Porter, writer of “Life Sentence” featuring Guy Gardner:

Alien has been a part of my life ever since childhood. The atmosphere of the Nostromo and the terrifying design of the Xenomorph will always haunt and fascinate me. I’ll never get tired of that movie. Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) will forever be the queen of survival horror in my book.

Halloween was a film I discovered later in life and fell in love with. The scene that really sells the horror for me is when Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence) gives the monologue about the evil that lives in Michael Myers. I watch it every October and it still gives me chills when he talks about Michael’s eyes.

The Orphanage might be my favorite ghost story on top of being one of my favorite movies. The truly terrifying moments of Laura (Belén Rueda) encountering the supernatural and the twist ending made that story an instant classic as soon as the film was finished. It’s horror with heart, which isn’t easy to do.

The Thing is a masterclass in creature effects, paranoia and tension. I can’t give the story enough praise, so if someone reading this hasn’t watched it, I encourage them to see it for themselves. Especially for that wonderful ending. Science fiction horror endings don’t get any better than that film.

Scream remains an important part of my experience growing up. It’s when slashers came back into the mainstream and Ghostface became a new household name overnight. Seeing each of the Scream films in the theater became a tradition that I shared with my friends for years. While I was never a big fan of the sequels, the original is still one of the best teen horror films.”

Mags Visaggio, writer of “Strange Visitor” featuring Superman:

I’m not really a connoisseur of frights, and a lot of my favorites are either pretty recent or really cheesy. I thought the new IT was legit terrifying, and the sleep paralysis documentary The Nightmare messed me up pretty bad. It Follows and Get Out are modern masterpieces, alongside The VVitch and The Babadook. But my flirtation with fear is more “Scary Stories to Tell In The Dark” than “Wes Craven.”

The Gifted Season 2 Episode 5 Recap

The Gifted Season 2 Episode 5 Recap

Andy and Lauren Strucker finally had their reunion on The Gifted. However, the previous episode illustrated just how far Andy will go for the Inner Circle when he badly injured Lauren. Their mother, Caitlin, also crossed several ethical lines to force a mutant to help the Underground. The heroes weren’t able to prevent the Inner Circle from escaping with a powerful mutant. But they were able to rescue several mutant patients who were held captive and abused at an institution. In The Gifted season 2 episode 5, the ramifications of those actions played out as the Underground tried to find sanctuary for their new charges.

Face Reality

Thunderbird brought Lauren back to the clinic, and she was diagnosed with a mild concussion. Caitlin berated Thunderbird for not bringing her son home. However, Reed and Lauren eventually realized that Andy firmly believes in what the Inner Circle is doing. Later, Thunderbird helped Caitlin treat a mutant patient named Michael, who secreted acid sweat. Thunderbird’s hands were burned in the process, but Caitlin was moved by the gesture and reconciled with him.

When Michael woke up, he told them that the woman liberated by the Inner Circle was Rebecca, one of the most powerful inmates at the institute. Even power dampeners couldn’t hold Rebecca’s abilities in check.

Hate PR

In a flashback to his days as a police officer, Jace was taken aback by his partner’s racism towards mutants. In the present, Jace attended a Purifiers meeting and listened as they proposed protests and violence. Jace had a more media friendly idea to track down the escaped mutants and present the Purifers as “the solution.” However, that led to more violence when the Purifiers invaded the clinic and attacked the doctors. Caitlin and Thunderbird kept most of the mutants hidden. But Michael was beaten to death before the Purifers got away.

Afterwards, Jace came up with a new way to strike at the mutants where they live.

Meet the New Girl

The Inner Circle couldn’t get much of a response out of Rebecca. Andy realized it was because they were treating her like a weapon instead of a person. He took the time to befriend Rebecca before she opened up. She even demonstrated her power to turn things inside out before kissing Andy. Because she no longer felt like a prisoner, Rebecca proved to be more receptive to the Inner Circle’s mission, and she began training with them.

Marked

Blink and Eclipse brought several of the escaped mutants to Erg, so they could receive sanctuary with his Morlocks. Erg took Blink aside and tried to convince her to stop trying to pass as an ordinary human. He also agreed to take on the refugees, but only if they received the Morlock “M” on their faces. Eclipse strongly objected to that, but most of the mutants agreed to take the painful mark on their faces.

Game of Thrones prequel adds Josh Whitehouse in key role

Josh Whitehouse (Poldark, Valley Girl) has been cast in HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel pilot in a key role opposite Naomi Watts, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Whitehouse is best known for starring in Masterpiece’s Poldark and will be starring as Randy in the Valley Girl remake. Other upcoming projected include the short To Trend on Twitter and The Happy Worker. Previous credits include The Receptionist, Modern Life Is Rubbish, and Alleycats.

RELATED: Naomi Watts Cast in HBO’s Game of Thrones Prequel Pilot

The big-budgeted spinoff is created by Jane Goldman (Kick-AssKingsman) and GOT author and prequel co-executive producer George R.R. Martin, written by Goldman based on a story by her and Martin. The untitled pilot takes the prequel concept to a new level as it is set thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones. The series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.

Goldman is serving as showrunner and will executive produce alongside Martin as well as fellow Game of Thrones executive producer Vince Gerardis and co-creator/executive producer Daniel Zelman (DamagesBloodline).

Martin confirmed that none of the characters or actors from the current Game of Thrones series will be appearing in the prequel since it is set ten thousand years before the events of Game of Thrones. He also noted that “three more Game of Thrones prequels, set in different periods and featuring different characters and storylines, remain in active development.”

UFO Drama Rendlesham Lands Laurence Fishburne to Produce and Star

UFO Drama Rendlesham Lands Laurence Fishburne to Produce and Star

UFO drama Rendlesham lands Laurence Fishburne to produce and star

The upcoming UFO drama series Rendlesham has landed Laurence Fishburne to both executive produce and star in the project, per The Hollywood Reporter. The limited series from British company Eleventh Hour Films Sony Pictures Television, and is based around the 1980s UFO incident often referred to as “Britain’s Roswell.” Fishburne will play Tyrone, a retired U.S. airman who had witnessed the incident when it occurred in 1980. 40 years later, he returns to the area and has to come to terms with what happened.

I’m beyond thrilled this phenomenal and iconic actor will be leading Rendlesham as Tyrone and facing down one of the most notorious UFO mysteries in history,” said Rendlesham creator Joe Ahearne.

The alleged sightings began on December 26, 1980 when U.S. Air Force security patrols stationed at RAF Woodbridge in Suffolk, England saw lights descending into nearby Rendlesham Forest. When servicemen went to investigate, they found a metallic object with glowing lights in the middle of the forest, and when approached the object moved through the woods, causing farm animals to panic. In daylight the next day, impressions were found in a triangular shape in the forest clearing, and on December 28, deputy base commander Lt. Col. Charles Halt and several other servicemen took radiation readings at the clearing and noticed lights in the distance.

The show will reportedly wave a complex family drama into the real-life events, which will span the 1980s through to 2020, which will mark the 40th Anniversary of the Rendlesham incident.

Here’s more info from the Society of Illustrators website:

A big business in the fifties, as many as 100 million comic books were sold monthly. Although the superhero and funny animal titles were popular in the forties the appetite had turned to subjects that reflected current trends and interests.

Perhaps the most prominent comic book publisher at the time was Entertaining Comics (EC), led by William M. Gaines. An aspiring high school teacher, Gaines found himself the 25 year old head of a struggling publishing company when his father died in a boating accident. Gaines knew little about the industry but hired young, creative editor/artists Al Feldstein and Harvey Kurtzman to test new formats and launched a broad slate of revolutionary titles covering science fiction, horror, crime, war, suspense and humor.

The EC team would later be called among the most talented assembly of comic book artists and writers the industry had ever seen. While quickly copied because of their unprecedented success, EC stories were markedly different from the competition. They were expertly illustrated, written for an intelligent audience and offered an unexpected twist ending. Critics would point to the violence depicted in the crime and horror titles or the mature nature of the story subjects. Gaines had assumed an intelligent audience comprised of young adults and older readers and not children who would otherwise find little meaning in the work.

When the Comics Code arrived Gaines first balked at censorship, eventually relented and submitted his work lest the comics not be distributed. But by 1955 it was clear that EC’s comic books were doomed and he ceased publishing all but one title – MAD. By turning this comic book into a magazine Gaines was free of the Comics Code and saw its circulation peak at more than 2 million over the next two decades. Harvey Kurtzman created MAD magazine in the 1950s as a vehicle for social commentary, for parody and to challenge the establishment. Pulitzer prize winning author and cartoonist Art Spiegelman said, “I think Harvey’s MAD was more important than pot and LSD in shaping the generation that protested the Vietnam War.” MAD gave birth to irreverent American satire and its influence is felt even today.

Robert Crumb said of MAD, “When I was 14, MAD was a very heavy thing. It was the first thing that poked fun at the mass media. The old MAD comics worked inside the mass media. But it started getting too strong. People got scared and the government threatened action. The publishers formed the comics code. There haven’t been any good comics since then. That’s 13 years.”

Jerry Garcia lead guitarist of the Grateful Dead, and himself a collector of EC comics, said, “For me, the 50s were rock and roll- and EC Comics”.

RELATED: Tales From the Crypt’s Killer Santa Story ‘…And All Through the House…’ in Comics, Film and Television

Curator Rob Pistella explains, “Bill Gaines and crew assembled among the finest illustrators of the day and produced timeless works that transcend the medium. MAD and EC Comics enlightened readers to such themes as prejudice, hypocrisy and inhumanity, and turned accepted conventions of science-fiction, horror and humor upside down – a revolutionary act that help to redefine popular culture.”

For the first time in New York, a gallery show and exhibition of the EC comic book art that struck fear in the hearts of arbiters of good taste will see the light of day. Featured are more than 70 large original comic book art pages by acknowledged comic art masters.

In addition to the original 1950’s pen and ink black & white pages are the printed comic books, story commentaries and biographies. Titles presented include Aces High, Crime Suspenstories, Crypt of Terror, Extra!, Haunt of Fear, Frontline Combat, Impact, Piracy, MAD, Two-Fisted Tales, Tales From the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, Weird Fantasy, Weird Science, Weird Science Fantasy, MAD 3-D art and more!

Award-winning artists featured include Johnny Craig, Reed Crandall, Jack Davis, Will Elder, George Evans, Al Feldstein, Frank Frazetta, Graham Ingels, B. Krigstein, Harvey Kurtzman, Joe Orlando, John Severin, Marie Severin, Angelo Torres, Al Williamson and Wally Wood.

This show is curated by comic art historian and collector Rob Pistella, with special thanks to EC aficionado and collector Rob Reiner for his contribution of words, art, advice and enthusiasm.

A Sequel To The Meg is in the Early Stages of Development

A Sequel To The Meg

A sequel to The Meg is in the early stages of development

The Meg could be returning to the ocean soon, according to Deadline. The big-budget monster movie about a prehistoric shark which hit theaters in late summer is getting a sequel, according to executive producer Catherine Xujun Ying.

It’s still in the very early stages, but we’re working on it. We’re trying to keep it secret at this time,” said Ying, speaking at the U.S.-China Entertainment Summit. Given that it’s early, there are no screenwriters attached, and Warner Bros. hasn’t given it an official greenlight. However, considering the first film made over $140 million on its opening weekend, a sequel seems likely.

RELATED: The Meg Review

In the first film, a deep-sea submersible—part of an international undersea observation program—has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific…with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, expert deep-sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Li Bingbing), to save the crew—and the ocean itself—from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon.

What no one could have imagined is that years before, Taylor had encountered this same terrifying creature. Now, teamed with Suyin, he must confront his fears and risk his own life to save everyone trapped below…bringing him face to face once more with the greatest and largest predator of all time.

John Turteltaub (National Treasure) directed the film from a screenplay by Dean Georgaris and Jon Hoeber & Erich Hoeber, based on the New York Times best-selling book by Steve Alten.

Stan Against Evil Season 2 concluded in November 2017 with Stan Miller (McGinley) and Sheriff Evie Barret (Varney) accidentally opening a portal into the past, allowing the 17th century demons to create new mayhem in their quaint town of Willard’s Mill.

Stan Against Evil follows Stan Miller, the perpetually disgruntled former sheriff of a small New England town, and Evie Barret, his younger, more spirited successor, and how the two are forced into an unlikely alliance upon realizing their sleepy little town is the subject of a 300-year-old demonic curse. Willard’s Mill, it turns out, was the sight of a massive 17th century witch burning and as such, Stan and Evie are forced into battle against demons, witches, haunted ponies, giant piglets, evil babies, you name it, all while trying to bridge their chasm-wide personal differences.

The Best Margot Robbie Movies

The best Margot Robbie movies

Margot Robbie is exploding in Hollywood.  Over the past few years, the ethereally gorgeous actress has worked with Martin Scorsese, been nominated for an Oscar, and immortalized a comic book villain.  In the near future, Robbie will be starring as Sharon Tate in Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.  It is a testament to how talented she is.  Also, rumor has it that Sony is courting her to play their live-action Barbie.  This is a testament to how beautiful she is. Beautiful & talented is often hard to come by in Hollywood, and that is why Margot Robbie has quickly climbed to A-list level.

Robbie had a small role in Richard Curtis’s About Time and a few other TV projects.  However, most people were introduced to her when she lit up the screen in The Wolf of Wall Street.  Since then, she has had many great roles.  Some are serious and show her range as an actress.  Some are ridiculous and exhibit her status as a screen siren.  Unfortunately, Just like any actress in the industry, there are times she was wasted. A few times she was given the thankless role of the wife/love interest (Focus, Goodbye Christopher Robin, The Legend of Tarzan).  But, many other times she owned her characters and truly shined.

Here are the best roles of Margot Robbie’s career.

Ann Burden in Z for Zachariah (2015)

It is surprising that Z for Zachariah did not get more attention.  It is a post-apocalyptic drama where nuclear fallout has dashed the world.  In a small Adirondack valley protected from the poison air, Ann (Robbie) has sustained herself.  Then John (Chiwetel Ejiofor) arrives. Later, Caleb (Chris Pine) arrives. There is no apocalyptic imagery other than the lack of other people.  What there is is a poignant drama about these three people. There is friendship, camaraderie, love, jealousy, and even deception. Margot Robbie is wonderful as Ann.  She is a strong, self-reliant woman who doesn’t have time for the affections and envy of these two men. It provides a lot of tension and excitement. Directed by Craig Zobel, Z for Zachariah is a solid acting exercise by all three stars, but especially Robbie.

Purchase now on Amazon for $8.99.

Herself in The Big Short (2015)

Adam McKay’s dramedy about the 2008 housing disaster was an incredibly unique film.  In order to explain the complex mortgage economics, he often used cutaways of celebrities, playing themselves.  By far, the best of these cutaways involves Margot Robbie in a bubble bath. This is Robbie owning her sex symbol status.  It is a hysterical way to make sure people pay attention to the explanation of subprime mortgages. Who is going to look away from Margot Robbie in a bubble bath?  No one!!

Tanya Vanderpoel in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (2016)

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is an outstanding film about Kim Baker.  Kim is a New York journalist whose life sends her toward a three-month assignment covering war-torn Afghanistan.  This film belongs to Tina Fey 100%. However, Margot Robbie’s role of Tanya Vanderpoel is crucial to the development of Kim Baker’s character.  Tanya is a seasoned veteran British war journalist. She knows the ins and outs of the job and what it means to be a woman in the patriarchal Middle East.  Tanya’s immediate friendship and mentorship for Kim adds plenty of levity and support for the fish-out-of-water. This exchange in the film is priceless, and Robbie’s delivery is perfect:

Tanya: Because you’re what, I mean, you’re like, a seven, a six, seven in New York? Here, you’re a nine. Borderline ten. It’s called “Kabul Cute.”

Kim: What are you here, like a 15?

Tanya: Yeah.

In WTF, Robbie really proves that she has great comic timing and functions as a character actress just as well as a leading lady.  That isn’t easy to do.

Annie in Terminal (2018)

This mess of a movie is as if the filmmakers were out to emulate a Richard Kelly film.  They succeed at that admirably.  It is pretty, with goofy but intriguing performances, and it all operates with a severe secret that you know will be revealed so you stay on board.  Margot Robbie is front and center as Annie.  She is a manipulative, depraved waitress that always seems like the smartest person in the room.  Simon Pegg’s dying English teacher is helpless against her charm.   She is an irresistible seductress toward Dexter Fletcher’s assassin character.  There are also several subplots about infiltrating a mercenary group and the odd omniscience of Mike Meyer’s janitor role.  It all adds up to a convoluted mess, but that is no fault of its star.  Robbie has the charisma and magnetism that no matter how confused and lost you might become, she is worth hanging in there.

Purchase now on Amazon for $19.99.

Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad (2016)

Say what you will about David Ayer’s ridiculous mashup of DC’s villains, it was better than Justice League.  Sure, the story is shallow and Cara Delevingne’s Enchantress is a terrible antagonist, but two things saved this film.  That is Margot Robbie and Will Smith, reuniting after there pairing in  2015’s Focus.  Will Smith does everything he can to bring some gravitas and morally acceptable villainy to his Deadshot.  However, it is Robbie as Harley Quinn that steals the entire show. Every scene she is in is funny, magnetic, and enticing.  Harley Quinn has such jubilant insanity that you are amazed the role didn’t get away from Robbie. You won’t quite buy her utility in a group where a man can’t miss a gunshot, a man can control fire, and a walking alligator.  Come on, she carries a bat and a gun. But Robbie is so good that somehow you believe she is imperative to the team. As if her craziness is the catalyst that holds these bad guys together.

Purchase now on Amazon for $9.99.

Naomi Lapaglia in The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

Margot Robbie’s performance in The Wolf of Wall Street effectively jumpstarted her career.  Martin Scorsese has a knack for writing incredibly strong female characters in his macho male-oriented dramas.  Lorraine Bracco in Goodfellas, Sharon Stone in Casino, Vera Farmiga in The Departed, and then Robbie.  She plays Naomi with such confidence that she goes blow for acting blow with the stellar Leonardo DiCaprio.  Such manic energy, such depravity, and such machismo are being thrown around the screen.  However,  it takes a special kind of actress to reign in her man and use her feminine wiles as a weapon to keep him in line.  That vulgar scene, where she tempts Jordan with her nakedness, only to deny him and reduce him to a prostrating child.  That is where she became a star.

Purchase now on Amazon for $12.99.

Tonya Harding in I, Tonya (2017)

That moment that Tonya lands her jump and the Euphoria pours from Margot Robbie’s expression.  That is where she solidified her first Oscar nomination.  In 2017’s I, Tonya, Robbie runs the gamut of emotions like a seasoned veteran.  At times, her Tonya is hysterically trashy and pitiful.  Other times, she is inspiring and passionate.  However, most importantly, she can be naive and tragic, which becomes the focal tone of the film.   Robbie owned her role of Tonya completely.  She never slipped into caricature and treated her and her story with the deepest of respect.  It doesn’t matter that she didn’t walk away with the Best Actress statue in 2017.  Those final scenes where she is stripped of her right to skate was some of the greatest acting of the entire year.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 1 Episode 4

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 1 Episode 4 Recap

With Sabrina agreeing to attend the Academy in the previous episode, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina season 1 episode 4 sees the young witch attending her induction into the Academy over a three-day weekend. With Sabrina away, Susie and Roz plan a girls weekend that reveals a terrible secret about the Greendale mine.

The Harrowing

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 1 Episode 4

Upon arriving at the Acedemy, Sabrina is summoned to Faustus’ office, where she is given a load of basic courses. Sabrina wants a more advanced load of conjuring, binding, and demonology, since her only purpose at the Academy is to defeat the devil. Sabrina’s placement runs her afoul of the Weird Sisters, who torture Sabrina by putting her through a hazing tradition at the Academy called The Harrowing. During the initiation ritual, new attendees at the academy are forced to retrace the steps of the Greendale 13, culminating with being hanged.

Sabrina fights with the Weird Sisters, which results in a call to Aunt Zelda. Zee tells Faustus that the reason Sabrina is acting out is because she’s not being challenged enough by the basic courses. Zee suggests that Faustus test Sabrina. He obliges by handing Sabrina a puzzle, which was her father’s thesis project. The puzzle has stumped Faustus for 20 years. With the help of a fellow student, Nick, who smuggles some of Edward’s notes out of the Academy library, Sabrina solves the puzzle, conjuring/releasing a creature.

Uncle Jesse

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 1 Episode 4

With Sabrina gone for the weekend, Susie and Roz have a girls weekend sleepover at Susie’s house. But, the girls are not alone in the house. Susie’s uncle Jesse worked in the mine that Harvey’s dad owns, until he got sick and couldn’t work anymore. Susie is responsible for taking care of Jesse with everyone gone for the weekend.

Harvey learns about Jesse and that Jesse lost his mind when he saw some creature in the mine. Harvey wants to know if Jesse saw the same creature that Harvey saw. Harvey tries to talk to Jesse, but a possessed Jesse attacks Harvey, forcing Harvey, Susie, and Roz to restrain Jesse to the bed posts.

Revenge

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 1 Episode 4

Ambrose is invited on a date with Luke, so he turns to Hilda to help him astral project to a coffee shop. Hilda initially refuses, but gives in after having enough of Zee’s badgering. While Hilda is helping Ambrose, Wardwell searches the Spellman home, casting spells that allow her to spy on Sabrina and gathering materials to fashion charms and voodoo dolls. Zelda returns as Wardwell is leaving, chastising Ambrose and Hilda both for projecting and for letting a stranger have the run of the house.

When Sabrina calls and tells her aunts that children have died during The Harrowing, her sisters are incensed. Sabrina takes her aunts to the ghosts of the dead witches and warlocks. Zelda thinks the ghosts want to be released from the woods, but Hilda understands them better. Hilda remembers how Zee treated her during her own Harrowing, and helps the ghosts get revenge.

Neither of the aunts can sleep that evening, worrying about Sabrina. Zee apologizes to Hilda for how she treated Hilda. Meanwhile, back in the woods, the ghosts help Sabrina turn the tables on the Weird Sisters. From that night forward, there will be no more Harrowing at the Academy.

The Nights HE Came Home – Ranking the Halloween Movies

The Nights He Came Home- Ranking the Halloween Films

The Nights HE Came Home – Ranking the Halloween movies

It’s been 40 years since he first came home. On October 30th, 1978, Michael Myers escaped Smith’s Grove Sanitarium and returned to Haddonfield, Illinois. On Halloween night, Haddonfield was forced to welcome home its anything-but-prodigal son.  Unfortunately for Laurie Strode and some of her annoying friends, he had more than a few tricks up his sleeve. Fortunately for audiences, once Michael came home, he never really left; treating us all to 4 decades of destruction.

Throughout the past 40 years, Michael Myers has returned in 6 sequels, 1 remake, 1 sequel to the remake, 1 reboot, and a cameo appearance in a film focusing on a season of the witch. Some of these movies were good. Some were really, really bad. All of them added something to the mythology of Michael Myers, however. Whether he was a silent killer working alone, a cult’s puppet with a weird tramp stamp on his wrist or a hillbilly with a family of the devil’s rejects, Michael Myers has survived everything thrown at him.

The franchise, just like Myers himself, just keeps going. As of October 2018, there have been 11 Halloween movies and, in honor of the newest film’s release, we’re ranking all of them. There are only a few more days ‘til Halloween (Halloween, Halloween) so sit back, carve a pumpkin, crack a beer and come with us as we explore The Nights He Came Home.

11) Halloween Resurrection (2002)

The Nights He Came Home- Ranking the Halloween Films

The less said about this film, the better. Halloween Resurrection was, in a word, awful. In another word, it was egregious. In yet another, it was insulting. The point is, Halloween Resurrection sucked. The ONLY semi-interesting aspect of the film was the opening, in which we saw Laurie Strode come face to face with Michael Myers one last time (or so we thought at the time). Even that scene was so contrived and illogical, that it almost depleted any of the goodwill that the previous entry gained with fans.

Purchase now on Amazon for $16.99.

10) Rob Zombie’s Halloween (2007)

The Nights He Came Home- Ranking the Halloween Films

Kay listen. We’re not mad at Rob Zombie, okay? He tried. It’s not like he was just trying to film a remake solely to capitalize on name-value and earn a buck like some producers do. Zombie truly believed that he had a story worth telling and we commend him for that. The problem is, the story wasn’t worth telling. Zombie took the best aspects of the original Halloween (subtlety, tension, shadows, mystery) and replaced them with lots of swearing, yelling, gore and a hillbilly backstory.

Zombie didn’t understand that the scariest part about Michael Myers was the fact that we didn’t know why he was the way he was. Audiences don’t want Michael Myers to be the victim of a broken home. We don’t even want him to be human, not really. We want our Michael Myers to be The Shape.

Purchase now on Amazon for $5.99.

9) Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2 (2009)

The Nights He Came Home- Ranking the Halloween Films

Speaking of Rob Zombie’s Halloween, his sequel was…interesting. Now that he no longer had to placate fans of the original film, Zombie was free to be as bat-sh*t crazy as he wanted to be. And boy, was he! There were ghost moms, white horses, and a very vocal Michael Myers. Like Zombie’s first one, Halloween 2 wasn’t a good film, per say. But at least he had a vision and saw it through to the end. Thankfully, there was an end.

Purchase now on Amazon for $11.99.

8) Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995)

The Nights He Came Home- Ranking the Halloween Films

Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers is the only Halloween film with two “cuts” available. The first cut is the Director’s Cut and it isn’t good. The second cut is the Producer’s Cut. It also isn’t very good, but it has more kills and a weirder ending. And also Michael Myers is said to be the father of his niece’s baby. So. Ya know. Ew.

There are a few positive elements of Halloween 6. Michael Myers’ mask is pretty on point, something that the films before and the film after never seemed to get right after the original. This was also one of Paul Rudd’s first roles and he plays a kinda-creepy-but-mostly-well-meaning Tommy Doyle. Additionally, this film saw one of the best “comeuppance kills” of a loathsome character out of the entire franchise.

Those are the highlights. The lowlights include, ahem: druids, cults, curses, scary old ladies, overacting, Jamie-Lloyd-but-not-Danielle-Harris getting killed, creepy Uncle Michael, creepy neighbor Tommy, creepy brother Tim, mean dad, dumb mom and death by pipe.

Purchase now on Amazon for $5.99.

7) Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989)

The Nights He Came Home- Ranking the Halloween Films

This is the last of the “bad” Halloween films and, truth be told, it isn’t terrible. There were just a few really obvious mistakes that were made. The film picks up a year after the previous film’s events. The main character, Jamie Lloyd, has been admitted to a children’s psych hospital after previously stabbing her stepmother. We’ll get back to that. Halloween 5 takes everything that was great about the previous installment and stabs it to death. Jamie Lloyd, previously a young, precocious heroine is now a mute. Rachel, Jamie’s older sister, was the other heroine of Halloween 4. Here, she is killed in the first reel, only to be replaced by Tina.

Ohhhh, Tina. We hate you. If Halloween 5 were a “typical” horror movie, Tina would have been the annoying best friend that got killed pretty quickly in an effort to ‘send a message’ to the actual protagonist. In Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers, she somehow takes the lead after Rachel is killed and we find ourselves silently rooting for Myers by the end of the whole thing.

Purchase now on Amazon for $9.96.

6) Halloween 3: Season of the Witch (1982)

The Nights He Came Home- Ranking the Halloween Films

And now, for something completely different. As the only ‘non-Michael Myers’ Halloween film, Season of the Witch has finally started to get its due as one hell of a good flick. Originally conceived to be the 2nd installment of a more anthology approach to the Halloween series, this film polarized audiences at first because of its lack of “shape.” It wasn’t until years later that audiences finally realized that this was actually one of the better Halloween films.

Season of the Witch tells the story of an evil mask-maker named Conal Cochran. Cochran wants to restore Halloween to the terrifying festival it once was before costumes and candy took the place of terror and sacrifices. To do this, he has decided to murder all of the children in the world or, at least, those who happen to be wearing Silver Shamrock masks at the time of the “Big Giveaway.” Season of the Witch is an incredibly mean-spirited film but it is, perhaps, one of the best Halloween sequels in the entire franchise. Much of this is due to the performance of Tom Atkins. Atkins plays Dr. Challis, a womanizing, borderline-alcoholic, absentee father who also happens to be the only man that stands between Cochran and the decimation of all children.

Purchase now on Amazon for $13.99.

5) Halloween: H20 (1998)

The Nights He Came Home- Ranking the Halloween Films

Halloween H20 or, “Halloween: Water,” as it’s been called, marked the return of Laurie Strode to the franchise after a nearly 20-year absence. This film ignores parts 4-6 and acts as a direct sequel to Halloween 2. Laurie Strode has changed her name to Kari Tate, and she is now the headmistress of a private school, deep in the California hills. Laurie may have changed her name, but she has never forgotten the horrors of 20 years ago. Michael Myers hasn’t forgotten them either. Now, he’s back to finish the job he started all those years ago in Haddonfield.

In a post-Scream world, Halloween H20 was surprisingly effective. What was not surprising was the reason: Jamie Lee Curtis. In history, there have only been a handful of protagonists that are synonymous with their boogeymen. Van Helsing and Dracula. Janet Leigh and Norman Bates. Batman and the Joker. None compare to the relationship between Laurie Strode and Michael Myers, however. Whether they’re siblings or just met by happenstance, or fate, Laurie and Michael were, in the words of the aforementioned Joker, “destined to do this forever.”

Seeing Laurie Strode and Michael Myers go toe-to-toe one more time, after 20 years, was a delight. Everything else was okay. This film introduced Josh Hartnett to the world, showed glimpses of the incredible actor that Michelle Williams would become and featured LL Cool J in a supporting role. Ladies Love Cool J.

Purchase now on Amazon for $4.99.

4) Halloween 2 (1981)

The Nights He Came Home- Ranking the Halloween Films

Halloween 2 acted as a direct sequel to the first Halloween. In fact, it picked up right at the end of the original film. Michael Myers has been shot “6 times!” But, as Tommy Doyle once prophetically stated, “you can’t kill the boogeyman.” Michael Myers has escaped and, now, he is finding new victims. This time, Myers is stalking the employees of the hospital that Laurie has been admitted to.

This film was not as good as the original, by any means. It also started the storyline that would take 40 years to change; the fact that Laurie Strode was Michael Myers’ sister. It was a major development that some fans loved and others hated. It was the first plot detail that took away from the randomness of Michael Myers, something that would plague the rest of the series for the next 40 years.

Still, the fact that it’s a direct sequel and features even more “Halloween” atmosphere makes this a more-than-worthy successor to the original. It’s a little more violent, a lot meaner and it has some baffling character decisions, but it functions as a terrific sequel and it is best viewed in conjunction with the original.

Purchase now on Amazon for $7.99.

3) Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)

The Nights He Came Home- Ranking the Halloween Films

Ten years after the original Halloween, audiences returned to Haddonfield for Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers. Following the critical and commercial failure of Halloween 3 (such a shame), producers decided to bring back Michael Myers for another night of destruction. Being that Jamie Lee Curtis was now a bonafide movie star, Michael needed a new victim and she would come in the form of Danielle Harris. Harris played Jamie Lloyd, Laurie Strode’s daughter who is now living with a foster family after the death of her mother.

This was the first “soft reboot” of the Halloween franchise and, for all intents and purposes, it worked. It had the Halloween atmosphere, a vicious Michael Myers and a protagonist that we cared about and actually wanted to live. Danielle Harris stole the show in this film as she was only 11 years old at the time of filming. She was put through the ringer too, as was her movie-sister Rachel, played by Ellie Cornell. Halloween 4 was a great way to jumpstart the series after Season of the Witch. Unfortunately, that momentum would not carry through for the rest of the series until, finally, a sequel was made that would bring Michael Myers back to Haddonfield once and for all.

Purchase now on Amazon for $9.96.

2) Halloween: H40 (?) (2018)

The Nights He Came Home- Ranking the Halloween Films

The most recent entry into the Halloween mythology is, for our money, the best entry, not named Halloween. We mean, it is named Halloween. But like, not the original Halloween. That’s what we meant. Shut up.

The point is, H40 delivered everything we could have possibly wanted in a sequel. Filmmakers Danny McBride and David Green opted to forego all of the previous sequels, focusing instead on using their film as the one and only follow up to the original Halloween. While this might upset some fans, it was a novel approach and, really, it was the only way to clean up all of the continuity issues of the franchise. And while it dismissed the notion that Laurie Strode was Michael Myers’ sister, it did offer up the definitive final battle between Michael and Laurie. Jamie Lee Curtis returned to the role that made her famous all those years ago and, in doing so, she gave fans the proper ending that we deserved.

Not yet available on home video.

1) Halloween (1978)

The Nights He Came Home- Ranking the Halloween Films

Of course, none of the previous entries would even exist were it not for the original. Truth be told, there are countless numbers of horror films that would not exist were it not for Halloween. We might not have Friday the 13th, a Nightmare on Elm Street and more without the film about The Night He Came Home.

Halloween is the definitive horror movie. There’s no better way to put it. It has tension, atmosphere, characters we care about, a bad guy we’re afraid of and a scenario that could happen to us. Perhaps this, more than anything else, is why Halloween was so successful. Michael Myers was, in the first film, not a dream demon or a hockey mask-wearing zombie. He was just a man that broke out of a mental institution. Laurie Strode was not a superhero or a vampire slayer; she was a normal girl who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Laurie’s life, as well as the actress who portrayed her, would never be the same again.

Halloween is the quintessential horror movie. The original film kick-started a franchise that has lasted 40 years. It gave us the premiere boogeyman of this or any generation, it gave Jamie Lee Curtis a career and it gave audiences nightmares for years to come. Halloween is the perfect film and, especially after the 2018 reboot, we cannot wait for Michael Myers to come home again.
