Bios is the story of Finch (Hanks) the last man on Earth, who is dying. “As he faces his own mortality, he builds a robot to care for his dog, the only thing he truly loves. Finch must teach the robot to become “human” enough to take care for his dog, and also must convince his dog to accept the robot as his caretaker and friend.”

Several studios, including Legendary, Warner Bros. and Studio 8, were in negotiations to to try to make the film, which plans an early 2019 shooting date.

Spielberg told the site, “Bios is an original, emotionally stirring tale that at its core is very much an Amblin movie. I can think of no one more perfect to embody this story about the meaning of being human than Tom Hanks.”

Tom Hanks will next be seen in Steven Spielberg’s December Oscar contender The Post, and will also pen the screenplay for and star in the World War II Navy drama Greyhound. Sapochnik won a directing Emmy for the Game of Thrones episode “Battle of the Bastards.”

The film Crazy Rich Asians directed by Jon M. Chu has gotten a release date

Warner Bros. has announced that the comedy Crazy Rich Asians, directed by Jon M. Chu will have a release date of August 17, 2018. That puts it opposite the films Captive State starring John Goodman and Vera Farmiga, The Happytime Murders starring Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph and Elizabeth Banks and Three Seconds starring Rosamund Pike, Clive Owen and Joel Kinnaman.

Jon M. Chu (Now You See Me 2G.I. Joe: Retaliation) is directing the contemporary romantic comedy, which features an entirely Asian international cast. The film stars Constance Wu (Fresh Off the Boat); Henry Golding in his feature film debut; Gemma Chan (Humans); Awkwafina (the upcoming Ocean’s 8Neighbors 2); and Michelle Yeoh (Star Trek: DiscoveryCrouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).

Color Force’s Nina Jacobson (The Hunger Games) and Brad Simpson (World War Z), and Ivanhoe’s John Penotti (Hell or High Water) are producing the film, with Tim Coddington, Robert Friedland and Kwan serving as executive producers.

Crazy Rich Asians follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu (Wu) as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young (Golding), to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. Excited about visiting Asia for the first time but nervous about meeting Nick’s family, Rachel is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life. It turns out that he is not only the scion of one of the country’s wealthiest families but also one of its most sought-after bachelors. Being on Nick’s arm puts a target on Rachel’s back, with jealous socialites and, worse, Nick’s own disapproving mother (Yeoh) taking aim. And it soon becomes clear that while money can’t buy love, it can definitely complicate things.

The film’s large ensemble cast also includes Chris Pang (Marco Polo), Sonoya Mizuno (La La Land), Jing Lusi (Stan Lee’s Lucky Man), and comedian Ronny Chieng (The Daily Show), as well as a number of Singaporean actors, including Pierre Png, Fiona Xie and Tan Kheng Hua.

Margot Robbie and Elizabeth Banks to team up on The Paper Bag Princess for Universal

Universal Pictures has nabbed the rights to the popular children’s book “The Paper Bag Princess,” featuring a team-up of Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games trilogy, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) and Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall StreetSuicide Squad), according to Variety. The book was written by Robert Munsch and illustrated by Michael Martchenko, and features a princess rescuing a prince. The film is reportedly a possible directing gig for Banks. Katie Silberman (Set it Up) will pen the script.

“The Paper Bag Princess” was published in 1980 and is the story of Princess Elizabeth who has her castle and clothing stolen by a dragon on her wedding day. She puts on a paper bag and goes off to fight the dragon and rescue her prince who has been kidnapped. The book has sold more than 10 million copies.

Here is a description of “The Paper Bag Princess” from Amazon: “Princess Elizabeth is excited to marry dreamy Prince Ronald, but then a dragon attacks the castle, kidnaps her prince, and burns all her clothes. In resourceful and humorous fashion, Elizabeth dons a paper bag, finds and outsmarts the dragon, and rescues Ronald—who is less than pleased at her un-princess-like appearance. What’s a modern-day princess to do? Read this delightful tale to find out.”

The film based on “The Paper Bag Princess” will be produced by Banks for her Brownstone Productions with Max Handelman. It will also be produced by Robbie and Tom Ackerley through their LuckyChap Entertainment, and Bryan Unkeless from Clubhouse Pictures and Dan Krech. The Post: Check Out the First Image from the Steven Spielberg Film

20th Century Fox has released the first official image from Steven Spielberg’s The Post, a film about the Pentagon Papers controversy which will star two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks (Forrest GumpCaptain Phillips) and three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep (The Iron LadyFlorence Foster Jenkins). The film also stars Sarah Paulson, Bob Odenkirk, Matthew Rhys, Bradley Whitford, Carrie Coon, Jesse Plemons, David Cross, Alison Brie, Bruce Greenwood, Tracy Letts, Michael Stuhlbarg and Zach Woods. You can check out the pic in the gallery below.

The Post will follow the 1971 scandal after the decision of The Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee (Hanks) and publisher Katharine Graham (Streep) to publish The Pentagon Papers. Written and leaked by military analyst Daniel Ellsberg, the Pentagon Papers established that the Johnson Administration had lied to the public and congress about US military involvement in the Vietnam War, and revealed that the Nixon administration had secretly escalated the war. The Nixon administration tried to stop The Post from publishing them, and Assistant U.S. Attorney General William Rehnquist took the case to the Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of the paper. The late Jason Robards won a 1974 Best Supporting Actor Oscar portraying a Watergate-era Bradlee in All the President’s Men.

This will mark the fifth time Spielberg has directed his pal Hanks after Saving Private RyanCatch Me If You CanThe Terminal and Bridge of Spies. While Streep has never appeared on screen in a Spielberg film, she provided the voice of The Blue Fairy in 2001’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence.

Written as a spec script by newcomer Liz Hannah, The Post will be produced by Amy Pascal (Spider-Man: Homecoming) alongside Spielberg and Kristie Macosko Krieger (Bridge of Spies). Rachel O’Connor will executive produce with Star Thrower Entertainment’s Tim and Trevor White, and Adam Somner.

The Post will hit theaters in limited release on December 22, 2017, with a wide release on January 12, 2018. Are you guys interested in the film? Let us know in the comments.

October 31 Digital, Blu-ray and DVD Releases

Welcome to the extra spooky Halloween edition of ComingSoon.net’s October 31 Digital HD, Blu-ray and DVD column! As you can see, we’ve added a video player at the top highlighting this week’s releases, and you can find more detailed write-ups of different titles below! You can click each highlighted title to purchase through Amazon!

New Movies on Blu-ray/DVD

The Dark Tower
The long-awaited adaptation of Stephen King’s epic fantasy novel series comes to Blu-ray this week, with Idris Elba giving a terrific performance as the gunslinger Roland on an odyssey between dimensions to destroy Matthew McConaughey’s Man in Black. Since the film rejiggers the books into something wholly different, it’s best to judge this film on its own terms, and even though it’s a little rushed and uneven in places, it is a worthy revision of one of King’s signature works.

Kidnap
Halle Berry stars in this supercharged thriller about a mother who takes things into her own hands after her son is kidnapped, trailing the perp’s car.

Person to Person
On DVD and Digital HD: Michael Cera, Abbi Jacobson, Philip Baker Hall and more lead this loose ensemble New York comedy from director Dustin Guy Defa about a disparate group of characters interacting over the course of a single day.

The Shadow Man (exclusive clip)
On Digital and DVD, this thriller finds a newlywed photographer stalked by a dark man in a brimmed hat who follows her from her nightmares and into reality. ComingSoon.net has an exclusive clip, which you can check out below!

Halloween Reissues

Land of the DeadDawn of the Dead
Scream Factory has reissued two defining zombie movies of the 2000s on Collector’s Edition Blu-rays: Zack Snyder’s 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead, and George Romero’s fourth film in his zombie cycle, Land of the Dead from 2005. Both films feature terrific transfers, and the two-disc sets each contain both theatrical and unrated versions, along with TONS of new bonus features. As for the films themselves, traditionalists like yours truly don’t care for the Snyder-ization of Romero’s “Dawn,” but the film has an unquestionable following and a slick script by James Gunn, who appears in brand new interviews along with other actors and make-up personnel from the film. Land of the Dead, though, is a wholly worthy entry from Romero, building off the previous three and adding new dimensions to the way a society of haves and have-nots cope with the zombie apocalypse. With a brisk 90-minute runtime, killer cast (Dennis Hopper, Asia Argento, John Leguizamo, Simon Baker) and a scale Romero had never worked on before, its the one film he made that truly deserves to be called “epic.” Leguizamo’s recollections of the shoot are honest and enthusiastic, with a great reverence for the master. Oh, and Pillsbury steals the show, and accordingly actor Pedro Miguel Arce gets his own new special feature as well.

The Lift / Down
Blue Underground is also killing two birds with one stone this week as they release Dutch director Dick Maas’ 1983 sci-fi horror romp The Lift as well as his 2001 English language remake Down. Both films are, not to put too fine a point on it, about a killer elevator. The Lift features some weird sex scenes and some showstopping set pieces, including an elevator beheading. Down features much-improved production value and a solid cast including Naomi Watts, James Marshall, Michael Ironside and Ron Perlman, although many of the scenes, like the elevator beheading and a final death, are ported over virtually shot-for-shot. The Lift features a booklet written by our departing ShockTillYouDrop editor Chris Alexander, while Down features one by horror community maven Michael Gingold.

The Devil’s Rain
Severin Films is giving the devil his due with a deluxe Blu-ray edition of this 1975 cult horror flick featuring a great paranoid William Shatner performance, Ernest Borgnine having all sorts of fun, and even a young pre-fame John Travolta for good measure! Travolta plays a man with a family curse who comes to a ghost town to do battle with a stanic cult led by Borgnine. Face-melting insanity ensues.

Slaughter High
Lionsgate’s Vestron Video Collector’s Series label brings another 80s cult classic to Blu-ray with this 1986 flick set in an American high school but clearly shot in England with actors well into their 30s. That’s part of the charm, though, and with the stunning Caroline Munro leading the pack, no one’s going to complain. The story centers around a dorky kid who gets horribly mutilated in a prank gone wrong in high school, then years later sets everyone up for a class reunion they won’t soon forget.

Kill Baby Kill
Kino Lorber has done a terrific job in the past of bringing Italian horror master Mario Bava’s film’s to Blu-ray (The Whip and the Body, Black Sunday, etc). The long-awaited restoration of his 1966 gothic classic Kill Baby Kill is a must-have for fans, bringing us indelible images like the little ghost girl Melissa and her bouncy ball, and Giacomo Rossi-Stuart running through an endless loop of rooms only to catch up with… himself! Unfortunately, unlike many of Kino’s Bava releases -which were taken from negatives – this film was given its 2K restoration from 35mm elements, so the picture has less focus and more digital grain than normal. However, it is still the best version available, having previously been available only on budget pan-and-scan DVDs. The disc also includes an informative commentary by Bava scholar Tim Lucas, an interesting locations doc from 2007 with Lamberto Bava, an alternate German title sequence and both English dub and Italian dialogue with English sub versions.

Reissues

Young Doctors in Love
TV producer-turned-director Gary Marshall (Pretty Woman, New Year’s Eve) assembled a murder’s row of great actors for his 1982 feature directorial debut, including Michael McKean, Sean Young, Harry Dean Stanton, Dabney Coleman, Michael Richards and many more. The gag-a-minute screwball comedy follows a group of horny, eccentric hospital interns in a series of loosely connected narrative threads that are hit-or-miss but certainly never dull.

Voice of the Moon
Oscar-winner Roberto Benigni (Life is Beautiful, Down by Law) stars in this 1993 film that served as a swan song for legendary Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini (La Dolce Vita, ). Arrow Video has put out a beautiful package that includes both Blu-ray and DVD, as well as the hour-long documentary “Towards the Moon With Fellini” about the making of the film.

New On Digital HD

Wind River
Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen star in this critically-acclaimed mystery thriller set in Wyoming about a murder that takes place on an Indian reservation.

The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature
Will Arnett returns to voice Surly, who must team up with his friends to stop the mayor from destroying their home to build an amusement park in this animated sequel.

Blood Dynasty
Our departing ShockTillYouDrop editor Chris Alexander directs this third installment in his art house vampire trilogy, which is available on Amazon Prime and VOD.

TV on Blu-ray and DVD

Halo: The Complete Video Collection
Shout Factory has put out a mightily impressive 6-disc set featuring four different iterations of the sci-fi video game franchise. The set includes the animated anthology movie Halo Legends, which is an anthology featuring multiple directors and animation styles not unlike The Animatrix. Also included is the complete run of series Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, Halo: Nightfall and Halo: Fall of Reach. Needless to say, this set is a must have for Halo fans!

Also available on Blu-ray for genre TV fans this week is Outcast: Season 1 and Orphan Black: The Complete Series Blu-ray.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle Should be on the Top Your Holiday Must-See List

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle Should be on the Top Your Holiday Must-See List

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle should be on the top your holiday must-see list

Jumanji, the 1995 film featuring the late and beloved Robin Williams, is coming back to the big screen with a modern twist. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a sequel that takes place 20 years after Jumanji. For those of you who haven’t seen Jumanji before, the story takes place within a fantasy adventure board game which you must complete in order to stop lions, carnivorous plants, and giant wasps from wreaking havoc on reality. Sony Pictures‘ Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is similar in that the protagonists must finish the game to return home, but different in that four stereotypical high school kids get sucked into a video game as avatars that are foils of themselves.

Spencer Miller, a nerdy gamer, becomes Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Johnson), a muscular archaeologist; Bethany White, a stereotypical snotty pretty girl cheerleader, becomes Shelly Oberon (Black), an overweight cryptographer; Anthony “Fridge” Johnson, a football player, becomes “Franklin “Moose” Finbar (Hart), a zoologist and weapon’s expert, and Martha Schwartz, a shy bookworm, becomes Ruby Roundhouse (Gillan), a commando who humorously exclaims, “why am I wearing half a shirt and short shorts in the jungle?”

While no major plot points have been leaked yet, we do know that director Jake Kasdan put together a unique group. Funny men Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black will be part of the cast, along with Doctor Who star Karen Gillan and singer Nick Jonas. It will be interesting to see if Kevin and Dwayne can recreate their chemistry from Central Intelligence.

While we can predict that these characters will return in one piece with a renewed bond and self-improvements (which the principal will surely attribute to being in detention), the star-studded cast and promise of an action comedy should make this movie a must-see.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is out in theaters on December 22, 2017.
