Rachel Zegler to Lead Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games Prequel

Golden Globe winner Rachel Zegler has officially been tapped for the leading role of Lucy Gray Baird in Lionsgate’s forthcoming The Hunger Games prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. The prequel is currently scheduled for a November 17, 2023, theatrical release.

Zegler will star opposite Tom Blyth (Billy the Kid), who was recently cast as the young Coriolanus Snow, the main antagonist of the original film series.

“When you read Suzanne’s book, Lucy Gray’s emotional intelligence, physical agility, and fiercely powerful, determined singing voice shine through,” President of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, Nathan Kahane said in a statement. “Rachel embodies all of those skills – she is the perfect choice for our Lucy Gray.”

“Like everybody, I first saw Rachel Zegler in West Side Story, and like everybody, I knew I was watching a star who would command the screen for a generation,” said director Francis Lawrence. “Lucy Gray is a perfect match for her as an actress: the character is bold, independent, and defiant, but also vulnerable, emotional, and loving. Rachel will make this character unforgettable.”

Based on the 2020 prequel novel by Suzanne Collins, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set 64 years before the events of the trilogy, starting on the morning of the reaping of the Tenth Hunger Games where an 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is assigned as the mentor for the tribute girl from the impoverished District 12.

“Years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol,” reads the synopsis. “With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, the girl tribute from impoverished District 12. But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem’s attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor. Uniting their instincts for showmanship and newfound political savvy, Snow and Lucy’s race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird, and who is a snake.”

Written by Michael Lesslie based on a draft by Collins and Michael Arndt, the film will be helmed by Hunger Games films director Francis Lawrence. It will be shepherded by franchise producer Nina Jacobson and her producing partner Brad Simpson, along with Francis Lawrence. Suzanne Collins, Tim Palen, and Jim Miller will serve as executive producers. Meredith Wieck and Scott O’Brien are overseeing on behalf of the studio.

Following her breakout role and acting debut in Steven Spielberg’s The West Side Story, Zegler’s star is continuing to rise, as she has currently lined up a number of high-profile projects including Shazam! Obi-Wan Kenobi: Episodes 1 & 2 Review: A Strong Start

On the lava planet of Mustafar, a Jedi master battles his apprentice. Emperor Palpatine’s words, “Execute Order 66,” echo across the galaxy as the Jedi are hunted down and killed. The Jedi master cuts off his apprentice’s arm and legs, leaving him to burn. The apprentice survives, suited with a life-sustaining suit of armor and becoming known to the galaxy as Darth Vader. The master is forced into exile on Tatooine, where he must watch over the apprentice’s son, Luke Skywalker. The master’s name? Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Ten years after these events, we have the story of our newest Disney+ miniseries set in the Star Wars galaxy, with Ewan McGregor reprising his role from the prequel trilogy. The first two episodes are an absolute delight, offering everything fans have waited for from this show and more. As the desert sands blow the name of the iconic Jedi master onto the screen, audiences everywhere are in for a treat as they get a look at Tatooine during the height of the Galactic Empire’s power. The series premiere offers a story that we never knew we needed, but one that has the potential to be one of the best installments in this ever-growing franchise.

Part I first introduces us to the antagonists. The writing is on point, with each villain feeling distinct and memorable. The Fifth Brother (Sung Kang) is the cold enforcer, the Third Sister (Moses Ingram) is the reckless killer searching for Kenobi, and the show reintroduces us to the Grand Inquisitor (Rupert Friend), the ruthless Jedi hunter who first appeared in Star Wars: Rebels. The dynamic between them is fascinating, as the Grand Inquisitor holds the Third Sister on a leash, stopping her from killing a Jedi named Nari (Benny Safdie).

We are soon reintroduced to McGregor as the famous Jedi who now goes by Ben Kenobi. The teleplay does the character justice, as we see his monotonous life of solitude on Tatooine as a stark contrast to his thrilling days as a Jedi master. His failure to save Anakin has left him a defeated, exiled Jedi, similar to Luke’s portrayal in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. He refuses to help Nari as he has left the life of a Jedi behind him and is dedicated to watching over Luke. The conflict between Kenobi and Owen Lars (Joel Edgerton) is investing, as Owen has good reason to want Kenobi out of Luke’s life, which remains consistent with how Owen behaves in Star Wars: A New Hope.

What follows is the start of the main storyline that was hidden from the marketing: the introduction of a young Princess Leia (Vivien Lyra Blair). Everyone expected McGregor to be phenomenal in reprising his role as Kenobi, but few anticipated the return of one of the most famous characters in the franchise, portrayed superbly by a young child actress. Blair captures all of Leia’s wit and intelligence, particularly in a scene where she tells off her cousin for being disrespectful to a droid. Leia’s tendency to think for herself and play by her own rules is excellently written.

The chase scene when Leia gets kidnapped is intense but also feels like the least well-directed scene in the show, as there are a lot of handheld camera angles that feel like basic, unplanned coverage. However, the rest of the episode continues to improve as Kenobi realizes he must help his old friend get his daughter back. He digs through the sand and recovers two lightsabers: one belonging to Anakin and one belonging to himself. The first episode closes with him walking towards a freighter with a lightsaber as the music by John Williams and Natalie Holt swells, sending him on the journey.

At its core, the story feels a lot like the classic “aging, grizzled hero is reluctantly sent back into action for one last adventure where he must battle his past demons” idea. However, director Deborah Chow brings a unique flavor to that idea as the first episode doesn’t feel like an action-adventure. The show also doesn’t have the Space Western vibe of The Mandalorian or the crime drama of The Book of Boba Fett. Instead, Chow hones in on something original, telling a story that feels like quintessential Star Wars with a tone that almost resembles the original trilogy.

Part I made the fascinating choice of showing Alderaan years before the planet fell victim to the Death Star, illustrating the world where Leia was a princess. Part II continues to expand the galaxy by taking us to Daiyu, a gritty, lived-in underworld where Kenobi investigates in search of Leia’s whereabouts. The storyline resembles Taken, and is such a fresh look at a galaxy audiences have been familiar with for 45 years. The second episode also brings in Kumail Nanjiani, fresh off his Marvel stint in Eternals, as a new character named Haja Estree, who gets some humorous moments as a hustler pretending to be a Jedi.

As Kenobi rescues Leia and does everything he can to keep her safe, the show cements a purpose for its existence. While it may have appeared initially that the show would be unnecessary nostalgia-bait that undermines the moment in A New Hope when Kenobi and Vader meet face-to-face, Part II offers two things that enhance Star Wars rather than hurt it. Firstly, this show marks the first time Princess Leia and Obi-Wan Kenobi have interacted, making the inciting event of A New Hope more meaningful. Perhaps the events of this series lead to Leia trusting Kenobi enough to ask for his help as he is her only hope. Secondly, this is the episode where Kenobi discovers that Anakin did not burn on Mustafar, having become Darth Vader.

The look on Kenobi’s face when The Third Sister reveals this to him is telling, as the camera pushes in on his horrified close-up. The Third Sister seemingly kills the Grand Inquisitor, although his appearance in Star Wars: Rebels suggests that won’t be the last we’ll see of him. As Kenobi digests this information, Part II ends with the return of Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader, submerged inside of a bacta tank. The writing of this show has been exquisite, as we have the established talent of Stuart Beattie (Collateral), Hossein Amini (Drive), and Joby Harold (Army of the Dead) working together to create absolute magic.

RELATED: Tales of the Jedi Details Revealed, Features Stories of Prequels Jedi

Obi-Wan Kenobi is not the show I thought we needed, but the first two episodes have me fully on board. The series has the potential to explore many things, such as Kenobi being able to speak to Qui-Gon Jinn through the Force, a storyline hinted at by Yoda at the end of Revenge of the Sith. A scene where Kenobi tells Leia that she reminds him of someone could pay off with a young Force-sensitive Leia seeing a vision of her dead mother, Padmé Amidala, through the Force. Beyond the prospect of a potential rematch between Vader and Kenobi, this show could tie up loose ends within the Star Wars canon while giving us a story that has been dreamt of for years. Perhaps we shouldn’t get our hopes up, but with how this show has started, perhaps we should.

SCORE: 9/10

As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 9 equates to “Excellent.” Entertainment that reaches this level is at the top of its type. The gold standard that every creator aims to reach.

Villains That Could Thrive in The Batman Sequel

With The Batman 2 officially announced, it’s time to spend the next several years debating the elements we want to see in the sequel. Naturally, the most important factor to any good Batman flick is its villain, which is why we decided to kick off a conversation about which members of the Dark Knight’s rogue’s gallery we want to see him square off with next.

And no, the Joker isn’t allowed on this list. Even if we fully expect Batman’s greatest foe to appear in some way shape or form in future films — how could he not?

Scarecrow

Yeah, we know … Dr. Jonathan Crane, aka Scarecrow, memorably appeared in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. Yet, despite Cillian Murphy’s terrific portrayal, we never really saw the villain reach his full potential. After teasing us with a few of his tricks, Crane finally equipped his mask in the climax of the film and was quickly ousted by Rachel Dawes (Katie Holmes) via taser; and only made brief cameo appearances in the subsequent chapters.

Now, if you’ve played any of the Arkham video games, watched Batman: The Animated Series, or read a comic book, you know full well the potential of this particular foe. Under Matt Reeves’ direction, Scarecrow would be genuinely terrifying.

RELATED: Batman Spin-Off Starring Colin Farrell’s Penguin Begins Filming Soon

Mr. Freeze

Under the right circumstances, Mr. Freeze could prove a worthy adversary in a big feature film, so long as he’s not played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. The tricky part would be figuring out a way to make his ice gadgets believable within Reeves’ grounded take, and giving his storyline — seen countless times in comics, TV, and video games — a fresh new spin. Considering The Batman leaned very closely to the spirit of the Arkham games, it doesn’t seem like too much of a stretch to insert Mr. Freeze into this universe.

The Ventriloquist

If Reeves wanted to get really weird, he could introduce The Ventriloquist. For those unaware, this villain is a wooden dummy named Scarface operated by the very insane Arnold Wesker. Considering the end of The Batman introduced the idea of a power struggle following Carmine Falcone’s death, this would be a really great opportunity to bring in the bizarre character, even if his appearance amounts to a brief cameo or subplot.

The Mad Hatter

Similarly, Reeves could have some fun with The Mad Hatter, a psychopathic maniac who hypnotizes his victims to do his bidding. While a tad outrageous, there are ways to ground his person in this newly established universe where his ability to control and manipulate Gotham’s citizens would serve as a semi-continuation of Riddler’s story in The Batman.

RELATED: Michelle Pfeiffer Would Consider Returning as Catwoman

Professor Pyg

Robert Pattinson’s Batman will likely run into his fair share of psychos, so why not bring in Professor Pyg? Not only is this villain a serial killer, but his desire to achieve physical perfection by surgically altering his victims would make for an extremely dark, disturbing noir-styled thriller. I imagine the Riddler’s actions essentially open the floodgates for the weirdos to step into the light (so to speak), which is the perfect opportunity for a character like Pyg to appear and try to establish his own bizarre Utopia.

Calendar Man

I don’t know if Calendar Man needs to be featured front and center in any capacity, but having him appear in a supporting role or as an inmate at Arkham Asylum would be fascinating, to say the least. What makes characters like him work is the fact that he is essentially a normal guy with a real messed up set of principles, which echoes the instability of Riddler and even Carmine Falcone — both of whom thought their actions were necessary for Gotham’s survival. Plus, given The Batman was set around Halloween, we’ve already established a precedence for Calendar Man, who is very enamored with the holiday schedule.

Victor Zsasz

Ditto for Zsasz, who isn’t a strong enough character to carry an entire film, but could make for a cool side antagonist Batman must track down whilst dealing with a larger conflict. In the Arkham games, he led Bats on a wild chase to locate kidnap victims hidden around Gotham City, which could make for an interesting subplot on the big screen. For what it’s worth, I think Reeves established the Joker in order to make him the grand master of all these villains. Imagine if he used his influence to goad psychopaths like Zsasz to lean into their animalistic tendencies as a means to study Batman before eventually stepping up as the main antagonist in a future movie.

Bane

As much as I love Tom Hardy’s Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, I want to see a version that more closely resembles the comic book iteration of the character. With a stacked Arkham Asylum already in play, there’s an opportunity for Reeves to adapt the Knightfall storyline in which Bane frees the likes of Joker, Riddler, etc., and allows them to break Batman down physically and mentally before making his move. With Bats out of the way, Bane could then take over the criminal underworld, setting the stage for Azrael and one hell of a power struggle.

Court of Owls

Court of Owls makes sense within the framework established in The Batman, as they are a group of assassins made up of Gotham’s wealthiest and most powerful individuals. Reeves could tie their storyline to the Riddler, who sought to eliminate the corruption at Gotham’s core but merely grazed the surface of this powerful organization.

Hugo Strange

I remember the build-up to The Dark Knight Rises featured no shortage of Hugo Strange rumors, and I remember being so disappointed when none of them came to fruition. In Nolan’s universe, he could have made for an incredible foe. That said, I have no problem kicking the tires on this idea for The Batman 2 as I think the mad psychiatrist makes perfect sense in Reeves’ world. What if he were to appear as a doctor in Arkham Asylum who becomes obsessed with Batman following his sessions with Riddler, Joker and the like? Or maybe he’s even the man Bruce Wayne turns to for help in restructuring his own damaged mind … either way, this one makes too much sense to ignore. Can we just cast F. Murray Abraham and call it a day?

Val Kilmer’s Madmartigan Is in Willow Disney+ Series ‘in a Big Way’

Val Kilmer is set to have a presence in the upcoming Willow series for Disney+, according to star Warwick Davis and executive producer Jonathan Kasdan.

RELATED: Disney+’s Willow Series Gets First Trailer, Release Date

The two members of the upcoming continuation of the 1988 film recently spoke to Yahoo Entertainment, where they revealed that Kilmer’s character from the original film will be a part of the new series, although they didn’t exactly dive into what Kilmer’s role in the film will be.

“Val’s a huge part of this, and the first conversation I had, when Warwick and I got the green light to do this, was with Val,” Kasdan said. “We wanted his character to be a part of the story. We wanted him to be in the show.”

Kilmer appeared in Willow as Madmartigan, a swordsman who helps Willow on his quest throughout the film. For the legendary actor, it marked just the fourth film that he had ever worked on. However, because of the COVID-19 lockdowns, Kilmer was unable to film anything for the series. Despite that, Kasdan and Warwick did note that he is in the show “in a big way.”

“Because we were shooting during [the COVID-19 lockdowns], he wasn’t able to come to Wales and shoot with us. But he is in the show in a big way, and we’re pretty excited about it,” said Kasdan. “Madmartigan lives on.”

Warwick Davis will reprise his role as Willow Ufgood. However, the spotlight will now fall on Princess Kit (Ruby Cruz), as she has to save her twin brother, who has been kidnapped. Kit won’t be alone on her quest, as a warrior named Jade (Erin Kellyman) and Kit’s maid, Dove (Ellie Bamber), will accompany her. Boorman (Amer Chadha-Patel) also joins the three young women in return for being freed from prison.

Jonathan Kasdan and Wendy Mericle are showrunning the series. Ron Howard, the director of the original Willow, will produce the series alongside Bob Dolman.

Bryce Dallas Howard, Dave Filoni Set to Direct Upcoming Star Wars Episodes

Bryce Dallas Howard is getting ready to return to the world of Star Wars.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Howard is set to return to The Mandalorian, where she’ll direct an episode of the highly anticipated third season. This will mark Howard’s fourth directing role within the Star Wars universe, as she’s already directed two episodes of The Mandalorian (Season 1’s “Sanctuary” and Season 2’s “The Heiress”), and has also directed the critically acclaimed “Return of the Mandalorian” episode of The Book of Boba Fett.

The outlet also states that Dave Filoni will direct a “handful” of episodes of the Rosario Dawson-led Ahsoka series. This is a return to the character for Filoni, who directed the character’s first appearance in the film Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Filoni also directed the character in The Clone Wars series, Star Wars Rebels, and her debut appearance in The Mandalorian.

The third season of The Mandalorian began production last year and was recently given a February 2023 release date during the opening day of Star Wars Celebration. The show recently wrapped production on its third season, which is set to continue the adventures of Din Djarin (Pablo Pascal), a Mandalorian warrior. Pascal’s character also recently appeared throughout the Disney+ series The Book of Boba Fett.

RELATED: Tales of the Jedi Details Revealed, Features Stories of Prequels Jedi

The Star Wars series is being led by Pedro Pascal as a lone Mandalorian gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy. Before the new season, Pascal’s Din Djarin previously appeared in last year’s The Book of Boba Fett spin-off. As of now, Carl Weathers and Gian Carlo Esposito are the only returning cast members confirmed for the third season. Back to the Future star Christopher Lloyd has also joined the upcoming new season for a guest-starring role.

The Mandalorian hails from executive producers Favreau, Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, Colin Wilson, Karen Gilchrist, and Carrie Beck. Favreau is also set as the showrunner and one of its directors.

King’s Land: Magnolia Nabs U.S. Rights for Mads Mikkelsen-Led Period Epic

According to Deadline, Magnolia Pictures has successfully acquired the North American theatrical distribution rights to Nikolaj Arcel’s forthcoming Danish period epic titled King’s Land, which will be led by Another Round star Mads Mikkelsen. Production is expected to begin on September 5 in Denmark, Germany, and the Czech Republic.

“I had the great pleasure of working with the amazing Magnolia team on A Royal Affair, and I’m beyond thrilled that they’ve boarded King’s Land at this early stage,” Arcel said in a statement. “It feels like coming home.”

King’s Land will be directed by Nikolaj Arcel from a screenplay he co-wrote with Anders Thomas Jensen. This project reunites Mikkelsen with both Arcel and Jensen after working with each of them on their respective acclaimed films A Royal Affair and Riders of Justice.

Set in the mid-1700s, the historical drama will center around Danish King Frederik V, “who declares that the wild heath of Jutland should be tamed, cultivated, and colonized so that civilization could spread, and new taxes be generated for the royal house,” per the synopsis. “However, no one dared to follow the King’s decree. The heath meant certain death – a godforsaken place haunted by ravenous wolves, highwaymen, and brutal and unforgiving nature. But in the late summer of 1755, a lone soldier named Ludvig Kahlen rode into the heath in stubborn pursuit of a lifelong dream, determined to reach his goal: the heath would either bring him the wealth and honor he had long sought…or get the better of him.”

Tales of the Jedi Details Revealed, Features Stories of Prequels Jedi

During Star Wars Celebration 2022, it was announced that the previously revealed show Tales of the Jedi will be a series of six animated shorts that revolve around iconic Star Wars Jedi from the prequel era.

RELATED: Obi-Wan Kenobi Episode 1 & 2 Recap, Theories, and Thoughts

Animation producer Dave Filoni confirmed that Tales of the Jedi would include additional adventures featuring characters like Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku. Filoni continued, saying that “some of these are dark,” and that there would be three episodes about Dooku’s fall to the Dark Side and three about Ahsoka, each following her at different points of her life.

Photos from the event show Count Dooku as a Jedi in the modern Clone Wars style, as well as a young Qui-Gon Jinn, assumedly from his time as Dooku’s apprentice. It was confirmed that Liam Neeson would return to voice Jinn, while Neeson’s son will voice the younger version of the Jedi Master. Kevin Kiner, who composed the music for the Clone Wars series, Rebels, and The Bad Batch, will be composing the score for Tales of the Jedi.

The first episode of the series was shown to attendees, and was focused on Ahsoka’s relationship with her mother prior to becoming a Jedi. Filoni said it started as the story of Jedi Master Plo Koon finding Ahsoka, but evolved into a story featuring a mother-daughter dynamic. Ahsoka’s mother is voiced by Janina Gavankar, who also played Iden Versio in 2017’s Star Wars Battlefront II.

The Witcher 4 Enters Preproduction, CD Projekt Red Issues Statement

While not much is known about the upcoming The Witcher 4, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the project has already entered its preproduction phase.

RELATED: The Witcher 3 PS5 & XSX Release Window Revealed in Anniversary Celebration

The news comes via an update in a CD Projekt Red’s blog post, which noted that the studio has officially concluded its research phase for the highly anticipated upcoming game.

“We are very eager to revisit the universe which has shaped our history to such an extent,” said president Adam Kiciński in the post. “We have recently concluded the research phase for the first game in the new Witcher saga, which means that from now on further development expenditures will be capitalized on our balance sheet.”

With the game just now entering preproduction, that means it’s pretty safe to assume that the game is still many years away from release. So far, the only things that have been confirmed about The Witcher 4 is that it will run on Unreal Engine 5, and that it will feature a new school, the School of the Lynx, after CD Projekt Red released a teaser image of a Lynx medallion, leading many to believe that perhaps Ciri would be the new main character of the game.

National Treasure 3 Script Being Written, Jerry Bruckheimer Wants Nicolas Cage

According to producer Jerry Bruckheimer, National Treasure 3 could become reality sooner rather than later.

MORE: Next Star Wars Movie Will Be From Taika Waititi, Release Set for 2023

Bruckheimer recently participated in a Reddit Ask Me Anything thread and was asked about the possibility of working with actor Nicolas Cage again. The legendary producer then revealed that the pair are actively working on a script for a third National Treasure.

“Absolutely. I love Nicolas, he’s a brilliant actor and we are currently working on a script for National Treasure,” said Bruckheimer.

If Bruckheimer is able to get a third film made, it would be a huge resurgence for the series, which is also receiving a Disney+ series that is set within the same universe as the original films. The last film to come out in the action-adventure series, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, was released in 2007. It was a massive success, earning over $450 million at the box office despite receiving mixed reviews.

Young Jedi Adventures: Disney+ Star Wars Series Announced

During the ongoing Star Wars Celebration 2022 event, Disney announced that a new animated series called Young Jedi Adventures will be coming to Disney+ and Disney Junior next year.

RELATED: Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Trailer Features Return of Cameron Monaghan

Young Jedi Adventures will follow original stories of Younglings — young Jedi recruits — as they are swept into a world of adventure and begin their journies on the path to becoming full Jedi Knights. The series will see the Younglings grappling with various topics, including compassion, self-discipline, teamwork, patience, and friendship. The series is set to premiere sometime in 2023. The series will see Michael Olson act as showrunner.

The new series not only marks the first full-length animated Star Wars series created for a younger audience, but it also marks one of the first series to be set in The High Republic era, a new era in the Star Wars canon that Disney established earlier this year. The High Republic era is set about 200 years prior to the events of the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

Foster is set to portray the leading role of Detective Liz Danvers. This marks the A-lister’s first major scripted TV project in nearly five decades since making appearances in a number of shows and TV movies during the 1970s such as The Courtship of Eddie’s Father, Julia, Gunsmoke, Menace on the Mountain, Daniel Boone, Ironside, Kung Fu, Alexander, Paper Moon and more.

MultiVerse Closed Alpha Preview: Warner Bros.’ Lovingly Crafted Platform Fighter

ComingSoon’s Tyler Treese and Spencer Legacy both spent plenty of time with the MultiVersus closed alpha on PlayStation 5. The Warner Bros. brawler is a ridiculous fighting game filled with a wild mixture of characters from franchises ranging from Batman to Game of Thrones. While it’s a bit absurd to see Tom and Jerry beating up poor Velma, the fighter is a polished love letter to the characters.

To fit the spirit of the game, below is a conversational preview with our thoughts on MultiVersus.

Tyler Treese: We’ve both been able to check out the MultiVersus closed alpha. I walked away pretty impressed, even if the game wasn’t exactly what I expected. I always have a bit of a hard time getting into some of these platform fighters when they’re so much like Super Smash Bros. but don’t really copy the formula exactly. MultiVersus is in a strange sort of middle ground. It has the damage meters, you get sent farther the higher your damage meter is, and it has a similar special attack system. But there are enough differences, from the lack of items to the charge attacks being pretty different from the smash attacks that use the right analog stick in Smash Bros.

How was your experience in getting used to the flow of gameplay?

RELATED: MultiVersus Open Beta Announced Alongside 3 New Characters

Spencer Legacy: I was surprised at how smooth the overall flow was, given most platform fighters tend to feel more than a bit awkward. Having played both the Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon fighters, I found that combos and dodges feel far more natural in MultiVersus than in any other similar game I’ve played. You can also tell that a lot of work went into the mechanics behind combat, as there are in-depth advanced tutorials that properly explain the somewhat complicated fighting game terms that are present in MultiVersus.

MultiVerse Closed Alpha Preview: Warner Bros.' Lovingly Crafted Platform Fighter

Yeah, I definitely dug the ability to combo together the light attacks and clearly a lot of care has gone into the combo and combat systems. Really, that’s what surprised me the most in general, just the surprising amount of care that went into every element. Like you explained in your feature, the visual design and little touches really go a long way toward making it a celebration of the included series.

Another major difference from Smash Bros. is that there is a real focus on two-on-two matches rather than going mano a mano being the default and featured setting (although you can obviously do free-for-all battles). Team matches are a thing in Smash, but there are actually skills tailored toward supporting your teammate. It’s a really interesting idea that I haven’t seen a ton in platform fighters.

These games always need a core differentiator, so that they don’t feel like a blatant rip-off. Do you feel that two-on-two combat was the right area to focus on?

Yeah, I’d say that’s a solid way to go. While in games like Smash Bros., you can fight two-on-two, more recent entries seem to have made one-on-one more of a priority. Since MultiVersus emphasizes two-on-two, it’ll be interesting to see how they make it feel different from any of the other platform fighters. So far, there are character moves that are based on helping out a teammate when they’re falling or buffing them, which is a good way to make team-based fighting less of an arbitrary addition.

I also do like that two-on-two in the alpha isn’t too hard to follow visually, as it would have been easy to fall into the trap of having too much happening on the screen with so many moving (and visually dynamic) characters and stage elements. If the full game keeps it looking clean with all the different characters and stages, I think the focus on two-on-two could really pay off.

My only concern is that they may neglect one-on-one to focus on two-on-two when you just want to play on your own sometimes. What do you think of one-on-one so far?

MultiVerse Closed Alpha Preview: Warner Bros.' Lovingly Crafted Platform Fighter

I’ve enjoyed my solo battles so far, but of course, I’m still in the honeymoon phase of getting to learn these characters. Some of them are pretty complex, such as Scooby Doo’s Velma having to find clues to power-up her attacks. However, some of the more straightforward characters, such as Bugs Bunny, feel a bit plain due to a lack of spectacle revolving around the action.

When I think about why I love Super Smash Bros., it is the thrill of reacting to a constantly changing battle. The items are popping up all over the screen, I’m having to deal with three characters that play very differently (unless everyone picked Marth derivatives from Fire Emblem), and the stage always adds to the experience. I think two areas — the stages and the lack of any items — might limit MultiVersus a bit from a casual perspective. It all seems very much tailored toward competitive play, which will be an overwhelming minority of people checking out a free-to-play fighter.

Other concerns I have are over balance and monetization. No big red flags came from this alpha, but it’s worth noting that characters can earn equippable perks. I basically always get flashbacks to Street Fighter X Tekken and its DLC gems as a way to just break a competent fighter. That’s not to say this will go down the pay-to-win route, instead it looks to be focusing on currency to unlock more fighters and a battle pass system similar to Pokémon Unite, but the potential is there to go awry.

I’m always a bit of a worrywart, though. All my hands-on time was very positive, but these are conversations to be had. What sort of features do you want to see in the final product? I am hoping for a proper arcade mode and some solid single-player offerings rather than it purely focusing on getting people online as much as possible, but it probably wants people to be showing off their costumes and player count as high as possible, so it’d make sense for online to be far-and-away the main focus.

I agree with you about arcade mode, and I hope there are fun arcade endings too. I think of games like Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, which had all sorts of characters meet each other in fun little scenarios for each ending. MultiVersus has so many varied characters that there could be some neat interactions in the endings that reward those who prefer single-player.

RELATED: Leaked MultiVersus Gameplay Shows Harley Quinn Taking on Jake the Dog

I don’t see it happening, but a large aspect of single-player in Smash Bros. comes from collecting things like trophies or spirits. I’d love to have a cool type of collectible that’s earned in single-player and multiplayer, as this would allow players to view unique character models and feel like they’re always accomplishing something.

Finally, I hope the roster gets really weird. I want stuff like Osmosis Jones characters, and Gollum from The Lord of the Rings alongside fun staples like the Animaniacs and Samurai Jack. Are there any characters you’re really hoping for?

MultiVerse Closed Alpha Preview: Warner Bros.' Lovingly Crafted Platform Fighter

I’m not that imaginative, but I like your suggestions. Maybe they could get ultra-specific and have Ezra Miller’s The Flash throw some chairs or something. That’d be quite the move set. In a more realistic suggestion, I’d love to see multiple versions of Batman, throw in a live-action version (ideally not Batfleck) to counteract the Kevin Conroy. Whether it is through alternate costumes or other character slots, there are a lot of wild ways to play with the multiverse idea. Also, I’d love to see some classic Midway characters since WB owns that library.

I really like that there are already some out-there choices for the roster, although I was a bit bummed to see an original character in this roster. It really goes against the whole theme of a giant crossover and hopefully they don’t do more original ones. C’mon WB, you already own the properties, so use them.

While I still have some reservations, MultiVersus’ closed alpha wound up really impressing and looks highly promising. I can’t wait to see what else Player First Games adds to the package going forward.

Obi-Wan Kenobi Explained: Who Are the Inquisitors?

One of the most beloved Star Wars characters is officially back as the first two parts of Obi-Wan Kenobi hit Disney+ earlier today. The series follows the adventures of the titular hero portrayed by Ewan McGregor after the events of Revenge of the Sith and before A New Hope. The Jedi master survived the Great Jedi Purge and stayed hidden on Tatooine to watch over the young Luke Skywalker. Still, it is not that easy to escape from the Empire, especially when the Inquisitors are on the hunt.

But who are these mysterious characters who made their first live-action appearance in Obi-Wan Kenobi? And why do they seem so eager to hunt down Qui-Gon Jinn’s apprentice?

ComingSoon spoiler alert

Who Are the Inquisitors?

As Revenge of the Sith showed, most of the Jedi Order was summarily executed by the Grand Army clone troopers following the orders of Palpatine. Still, a few Force-sensitive people survived the purge and lived in clandestinity, hiding their real identities and powers. To hunt down all the remaining Jedi, the Galactic Empire instituted an organization called the Inquisitorius. All the Inquisitors were Force-sensitive agents who pledged their fealty to the Galactic Emperor and Darth Vader. The Grand Inquisitor led the Inquisitorius, while the remaining members identified themselves as Brothers and Sisters. The crimson-colored double lightsabers they wield are the reason for their nickname, “Red Blades.”

The Inquisitors made their first appearance in the Star Wars universe in 2014’s Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion. The organization played a pivotal role in the events of the Star Wars: Rebels animated series. Still, their whys and hows have only been explored in the Darth Vader comic run so far.

Obi-Wan Kenobi introduces the Grand Inquisitor (Rupert Friend), the Fifth Brother (Sung Kang), and the Third Sister (Moses Ingram) as they look for any surviving Jedi on Tatooine. The Third Sister’s real name is Reva and she seems to be obsessed with finding Kenobi and delivering him to Darth Vader. After the stubborn Owen Lars (Joel Edgerton) — a.k.a. Luke Skywalker’s moisture farmer uncle — refuses to reveal the Jedi’s whereabouts, the Inquisitorius leaves Tatooine. Still, they eventually force Kenobi to leave his hideout after kidnapping Leia Skywalker and bringing her to the planet Daiyu. The Jedi master had a brief confrontation with his foes and managed to save the young princess.

While the Grand Inquisitor is the organization’s leader, it is not uncommon to see the Inquisitors rebelling against the authority. In the comics, even Darth Vader had to put some disobedient members in their place. The fact that they are so liberal in adopting deceptive ways led them to betray one another often. Reva herself seems to tolerate very little the Grand Inquisitor’s authority and she stabs him as soon as he asks her to stop chasing Kenobi. The countless betrayals are probably why the organization didn’t last long. Its foundation dates back to 19 BBY, but the Emperor dismantled it already before the events of Rogue One in 0 BBY.

What do you think about the live-action appearance of the Inquisitors? Let us know in the comments section below.
