Netflix acquires Knives Out franchise in $400+ million deal

Last February saw the exciting announcement that Lionsgate had greenlit a sequel to Rian Johnson’s acclaimed whodunnit Knives Out but now, the franchise is seeing a major shift as Netflix is closing a deal to acquire the rights for a second and third installment in the series, according to Deadline.

Sources report that the deal came about from a discreet bidding war between Apple, Amazon and Netflix to acquire the rights, which is owned and licensed by Johnson and his producing partner and T-Street co-founder Ram Bergman on a picture-by-picture basis. Though it’s currently unclear as to why the duo elected to sell the rights to the murder mystery films to the streaming platform, word notes that Netflix won out the auction in an approximately $450 million deal.

The first film was acquired by Media Rights Capital, who sold it to Lionsgate and sources report helped sell the follow-ups to Netflix. In addition to the sale, exciting word has broken that the first of the sequels is expected to begin shooting in Greece on June 28 with casting set to begin immediately.

Knives Out first hit theaters in November 2019 to rave reviews from critics, garnering three Golden Globe nominations and an Oscar nod for Best Original Screenplay, and was a smash hit at the box office, grossing over $311 million at the global box office on its $40 million budget.

The original paid tribute to the celebrated works of Agatha Christie, plotting a modern-day murder mystery in which renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey is found dead at his estate the morning after his 85th birthday, sparking the interest of stylish private detective Benoit Blanc to investigate. Weaving his way through the eccentric Thrombey family and his devoted staff, Blanc must see through the intricate web of lies and red herrings to determine the truth behind Thrombey’s demise.

IFC Midnight acquires Neill Blomkamp’s horror pic Demonic

On the heels of the South African filmmaker revealing that he had begun development on a follow-up to his 2009 hit sci-fi pic District 9, IFC Midnight has announced that it has acquired the rights to Neill Blomkamp’s forthcoming supernatural horror film Demonic.

The film, written and directed by Blomkamp, centers on a young woman who unleashes terrifying demons when the supernatural forces at the root of a decades-old rift between mother and daughter are ruthlessly revealed. The project marks Blomkamp’s first foray into the horror genre, with his long-in-development fifth mainline installment of the Alien franchise languishing in development limbo as 20th Century and Disney continue to determine a path forward for the sci-fi series.

“Neil Blomkamp exploded onto the filmmaking scene with District 9 and has made his mark by creating films that challenge and subvert the genre,” Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films, said in a statement. “It’s exciting to work together on this highly anticipated new vision, and be immersed in yet another world terrifyingly similar to our own.”

The cast for the film is comprised of up-and-comers including Carly Pope (Elysium), Chris William Martin (The Age of Adaline, Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, The Vampire Diaries) and Michael Rogers (Siren, The Blacklist).

“IFC Midnight is an ideal brand for Neill’s first foray into supernatural terror to be released theatrically and in other media and we’re very confident in the job that Arianna and her team are going to do,” AGC Studios Chairman and CEO Stuart Ford said in a statement.

Running from 1996-97 over the course of 13 issues, the comic arc saw the Dark Knight, still early in his career after the events of Year One, as he must track down a serial killer plaguing Gotham who only strikes once a month on a holiday. Batman must work with District Attorney Harvey Dent and GCPD Captain James Gordon in a race against time to discover who Holiday is before he claims his next victim while also stopping the crime war between the Maroni and Falcone families. The story arc was notable for tying into the events that would lead to Dent’s transformation into Two-Face.

The ensemble roster for the film will be led by Jensen Ackles (Supernatural) as Bruce Wayne/Batman, marking his second animated Dark Knight film after starring as Jason Todd/Red Hood in 2010’s Batman: Under the Red Hood. HBO Max orders The Staircase limited series adaptation starring Colin Firth

HBO Max has ordered The Staircase, an eight-episode limited series starring Academy and BAFTA Award-Winner Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, A Single Man, Kingsman: The Secret Service) as American novelist Michael Peterson. The series is written by Antonio Campos (The Devil All the Time, The Sinner) who will also direct six of the eight episodes. Adapting the true-crime docuseries The Staircase and various books and reports on the case, the series is an exploration of the life of Michael Peterson, his sprawling North Carolina family, and the suspicious death of his wife, Kathleen Peterson.

“This has been a project I have been working on in one way or another since 2008. It’s been a long and winding road, but well worth the wait to be able to find partners like HBO Max, Annapurna, co-showrunner Maggie Cohn and the incredible Colin Firth to dramatize such a complex true-life story,” Campos said.

“It is a thrill to collaborate with Antonio Campos, Maggie Cohn and Annapurna Television for the exploration of this true-life story that’s rife with dramatic revelations. With the enormously talented Colin Firth at the center of this adaptation, the story of The Staircase will continue to captivate audiences with every bizarre twist and turn,” added Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content, HBO Max.

Sue Naegle, Chief Content Officer, Annapurna, said: “Annapurna couldn’t be more excited to partner with HBO Max, Antonio Campos, Maggie Cohn and Colin Firth on this unbelievable true-life saga. Randall Park To Make Feature Directorial Debut With Shortcomings

Randall Park To Make Feature Directorial Debut With Shortcomings

Randall Park to make feature directorial debut with Shortcomings

On the heels of making his episodic directorial debut with the Fresh Off the Boat series finale, Randall Park is ready to step back behind the camera for his feature debut with an adaptation of Adrian Tomine’s acclaimed graphic novel Shortcomings for Roadside Attractions and Imminent Collision.

RELATED: Daniel Dae Kim & Randall Park to Lead Heist Film at Amazon Studios

Adapted by Tomine, who is also set to executive produce the project, the story follows a trio of young Bay Area urbanites––Ben Tanaka, Miko Hayashi, and Alice Kim––as they navigate a range of interpersonal relationships, traversing the country in search of the ideal connection. In cafes, bars, and bedrooms, their stories collide and intertwine with naked candor and razor-sharp humor. The groundbreaking graphic novel is considered an iconic work of contemporary Asian American fiction and stands as a poignant and hilariously irreverent examination of racial politics, sexual mores, and pop culture.

“I am such a huge fan of Adrian’s work, and I’m very excited to team with him and Roadside Attractions on this updated, modern take of Shortcomings,” Park said in a statement. “In these characters, I see versions of Asian Americans in my own life – the ones I love and the ones I just kind of tolerate.”

In addition to directing, Park is set to produce the film via his Imminent Collision production label alongside partners Hieu Ho and Michael Golamco, Roadside Attractions’ Co-Presidents Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff, Senior Vice President Jennifer Berman and Creative Executive Ryan Paine, who brought the package to the studio.

“With his adaptation of Shortcomings, Adrian has proven himself not only a brilliant cartoonist but also a talented screenwriter,” Berman said in a statement. “When Randall came to us with a true artist’s vision for telling this story cinematically, everything clicked into place. We are honored to work with this stellar creative team to help bring this hilariously poignant story to screen.”

Tomine has been developing the project with Roadside, Imminent and Park have been developing the project for some time together and are gearing up to bring it to potential buyers in the coming weeks.

Shortcomings is a book that’s very close to my heart, and I have long resisted the idea of any adaptation that didn’t feel true to the style and spirit of the material,” Tomine said in a statement. “Randall, Roadside Attractions and Imminent Collision immediately impressed me with their passion, insight, and vision for this film. They have been invaluable partners in the process of translating Shortcomings both to the screen as well as to the current time, and I’m honored to be a part of this collaboration.”

In this stranger than fiction saga, the story centers on A’Ziah King, aka ZOLA, a Detroit waitress who strikes up a friendship with a customer, Stefani, over their shared love of pole dancing. Stefani seduces Zola to join in a weekend of dancing and partying in Florida just a day after exchanging numbers, and while it initially seems like a glamorous trip full of “hoeism” it rapidly transforms into a 48-hour journey involving Stefani’s violent and nameless pimp, her idiot boyfriend Derrek, some Tampa gangster and other unexpected adventures.

The film stars Taylour Paige (Boogie, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) in the titular role alongside Riley Keough (The Girlfriend Experience, Logan Lucky), Nicholas Braun (The Big Ugly, Succession) as Derrek, Colman Domingo (Fear the Walking Dead, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) as X, Ari’el Stachel (Jessica Jones, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) and Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton, Kong: Skull Island).

Celebrated director Janicza Bravo (Gregory Go Boom, Lemon) helms the biographical dramedy on a script co-written by her and Jeremy O. Harris (Euphoria). The film had first begun development in 2016 with James Franco (The Disaster Artist) directing and producing the project, though amidst the wave of sexual misconduct allegations against him, he was replaced by Bravo as A24 acquired it. His brother, Dave (The Rental), is attached as a producer on the film.

NYC’s Paris Theater Reopens With Mank and More!

NYC's Paris Theater Reopens With Mank and More!

NYC’s Paris Theater reopens with Mank and more!

The Netflix-owned Paris Theater, a New York City landmark since 1948 and the only existing single screen theater in the city, is presenting David Fincher’s Mank in an exclusive 35mm engagement starting this Friday, April 2.

RELATED: David Fincher’s Mank Trailer Takes Gary Oldman to 1930s Hollywood

Although its story hinges on screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz’s collaboration with Orson Welles on Citizen Kane, and Kane provides Fincher’s stylistic inspiration, the real core of Mank is its depiction of a maverick artist in the world of 1930s Hollywood and the relationship between Mankiewicz (Gary Oldman), Marion Davies (Amanda Seyfried), and William Randolph Hearst (Charles Dance). Mank‘s Oscar nominations are for Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actress, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, Original Score, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Sound.

The historic Paris Theater (where Orson Welles’s Othello premiered in 1955) is the only place in New York City to see Mank in 35mm.

The Paris has also unveiled their first filmmaker event, a day devoted to Ramin Bahrani, the acclaimed Iranian-American New York City-based writer/director, who is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, for The White Tiger. Things kick off on Saturday, April 10 at noon with a 35mm screening of Martin Scorsese’s GoodFellas, selected by Bahrani as a key influence on his work. GoodFellas will be introduced by film critic Glenn Kenny, author of the new book “Made Men: The Story of GoodFellas.” A book signing with Kenny follows the screening.

At 3:30 p.m. is a showing of The White Tiger, followed by a conversation with Bahrani. The White Tiger follows the epic journey of a poor Indian driver who must use his wit and cunning to break free from servitude to his rich masters and rise to the top of the heap, and is based on Aravind Adiga’s New York Times best seller & Man Booker Prize-winning novel. At 7:15 p.m. is Bahrani’s 2007 critically acclaimed Chop Shop, set in a ramshackle neighborhood amidst the auto repair shops of Willets Point, Queens.

Ramin Bahrani on GoodFellas, and its influence on The White Tiger“I first saw Martin Scorsese’s GoodFellas in a cinema when I was fifteen, and the film has been seared into my mind ever since. I was pulled into its epic tale of complex anti-heroes and biting dark comedy. I saw how Scorsese mixed a documentary-style attention to detail with dynamic camera movements, and then wove it together with an evocative soundtrack and unforgettable voice-over narration. And the film refused to pass judgements or form moral conclusions about its deeply flawed characters. This masterpiece was a constant source of inspiration while writing The White Tiger.”

CS Interview: Tom Holkenborg On His Score for Godzilla vs. Kong!

CS Interview: Tom Holkenborg spills the details on his score for Godzilla vs. Kong!

Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie XL, is having quite the month. A few weeks ago, his score for Zack Snyder’s Justice League was released and now he’s about to unleash even more drum-filled awesomeness with his terrific soundtrack for Godzilla vs. Kong. The anticipated monster bash will be available to stream on HBO Max on Wednesday, March 31 at 3:01 a.m. ET/12:01 a.m. PT., and to commemorate the event, Holkenborg was kind enough to chat with ComingSoon.net about his scoring process via a roundtable interview.

By now, many a film score enthusiast has heard about Holkenborg’s enormous drum, which he had custom built specifically to deliver the proper sound for King Kong, but, as it turns out, building a massive drum isn’t as easy as it sounds.

“When I got hired, I was like, okay, we need something big for Kong,” the composer explained. “I called up a friend of mine and asked, ‘Can you make me a bass drum that’s eight foot?’ And he said no. And I said, ‘Why not? He said, ‘There isn’t a cow big enough that will give you an eight-foot skin.”

After pressing further, Holkenborg realized he could make a drum that was five-foot in diameter and roughly six-feet wide. Months passed, but before long Holkenborg had his massive instrument.

“It took six guys to roll it off the truck,” Holkenborg said. “And then the big thing came — it’s not fitting through the front door. I didn’t think of this. And so, we opened the garage, and it barely fit underneath the garage … we rolled it in and still sits there [today].”

Still, despite a massive drum at his disposal, Holkenborg continued his quest to find the perfect sound for Kong; and in so doing happened across The NAMM Show in Anaheim, “the world’s largest trade-only event for the music products, pro audio and event tech industry,” per the official site, where he came across a beautiful sight: a 14-foot bass amplifier, the biggest one of its kind in the world.

“I went up to the salesperson [and asked], ‘Is that thing for rent or for sale?’ He said, ‘No, no, no, no, absolutely not. Because it takes 10 people and a crane to put it in here.’”

As it turns out, the instrument is housed in a building complex in Calabasas, which just happens to be 10 miles from Holkenborg’s home studio in Los Angeles.

“I went with recording gear there and then we recorded my bass guitar,” he said. “We sampled my bass guitar on that amp, and the low end coming from that thing is ridiculous. So, now I had a massive bass roll with a huge amount of low ends and now I had bass guitar samples with a huge amount of low ends. And I was like, ‘Okay, I’m done for Kong.’”

For Godzilla, Holkenborg relied on a more traditional style.

“I wanted a monster theme that reminds us of like, 50 or 60 years of Godzilla’s history. And so that was very important. When you hear it, it’s like, ah, that’s Godzilla! You know, unmistakably. That is a ridiculous, big brass section that played that in the lowest octave of their instruments and it sounds nasty, but it does put a smile on your face.”

Holkenborg carries a soft spot for the giant, atomic-fire breathing lizard, having spent much of his youth watching the classic Toho Godzilla movies of the 50s and 60s.

RELATED: WB Taps Godzilla vs. Kong Director Adam Wingard for ThunderCats!

“I find Godzilla a highly comedic character,” Holkenborg said. “My favorite movie is Godzilla vs. Mothra. And so, when people ask me, is it a good film? I say, ‘Well, besides the bad script, besides the horrible acting, besides the bad special effects, and besides the really bad scripted fight sequences, it’s a fantastic movie.”

Holkenborg’s score does a fine job establishing proper identities for both beasts. Kong’s music is the most diverse, with lush melodies interwoven between thunderous, drum-heavy action cues, while Godzilla’s theme is, in Holkenborg’s words, “a one-trick pony,” mostly because the reptilian behemoth isn’t one to display much emotion, unlike Kong who is a little more expressive and human in his personality.

“King Kong is really like an animal that is misunderstood,” Holkenborg said. “He’s taken against his own free will to the Western world for capital gains … and he develops a relationship with a young girl who cannot talk. So, she talks with him in sign language, and there are moments in the film where it’s really cute how the two interact; and so, there’s a very emotional side of Kong as well. His theme has two parts of it. One is when he stands up and does the roar when he’s gonna fight Godzilla. That’s one section of the theme. And then the other one is the emotional version of the of the theme. And that one is played on a bed of marimbas, bass marimbas that play his harmony … and a Pacific Island flute that is playing a melody. So, you couldn’t score an animal that big, so small, and it works really well. But for the action sequence, it’s all larger than life, [and so is] the music, and especially the battle sequences between the two, it’s a constant handoff between the two themes.”

In the end, the project, while daunting, proved to be a worthwhile experience for Holkenborg, who has also composed music for the films Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Alita: Battle Angel, the modern classic Mad Max: Fury Road as well as the upcoming Army of the Dead for Zack Snyder.

“Working on [films like] Justice League and working on Godzilla vs. Kong … it’s like a young boy’s dream,” Holkenborg said. I mean if my dad would have told me when I was six or seven, reading those King Kong comics, ‘Son, when you’re 53, you’re gonna be working on this movie!’ I would’ve been like, ‘Ah, get out of here!’ It’s really great.”
