Sonic the Hedgehog Olive Garden Jokes Weren’t Product Placement

A running gag throughout both the 2020 film Sonic the Hedgehog and 2022’s sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, has been the iconic video game character’s love of the restaurant Olive Garden.

RELATED: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Review: A Superior Sequel

In a recent interview with Fandom, writer Pat Casey acknowledged the many Olive Garden gags in the first film, but said that it actually wasn’t a matter of legitimate product sponsorship. Instead, the team behind the film just thought it would be funny, and it continued to grow.

“A lot of that was not product placement,” Casey said with a laugh. “The Olive Garden thing…Olive Garden didn’t pay us for that, it was just a joke. It was just a little thing, and then it seemed to keep growing on set when I wasn’t there, they kept throwing in more Olive Garden references, I don’t know. The joke was originally just that the General gives them a crappy gift card at the end, and then it became a whole thing. It worked its way back into earlier in the movie.”

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 once again features the voice of Parks and Recreation vet Ben Schwartz as the titular speedster. Joining him are returning cast members James Marsden (Westworld), Tika Sumpter (Ride Along), Natasha Rothwell (Wonder Woman 1984), Adam Pally (The Mindy Project), and Jim Carrey (Kidding).

“After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero,” reads the official synopsis. “His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.”

Additional cast for the sequel includes franchise newcomers Shemar Moore, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, and Idris Elba, with the latter two set to respectively voiced the roles of Tails and Knuckles.

The sequel was directed by Jeff Fowler from a screenplay written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller. Neal H. Mortiz, Toby Ascher, and Toru Nakahara all returned to produce while Hajime Satomi, Haruki Satomi, and Tim Miller executive produce.

The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe Review: A Rerelease That Brilliantly Skewers Rereleases

The Stanley Parable was remarkable in 2013 for its subversive and silly analysis of the video game medium. But with games like OneShot, Undertale, and Crows Crows Crows’ own The Beginner’s Guide, shows like Rick and Morty, and the two Deadpool films, meta storytelling self-referential media is much more prevalent now. It’s not as special, which could potentially work against The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe. But this upgraded version of the original is smart enough to rib enhanced ports while also being a fantastic one itself, too.

Being a port means that Ultra Deluxe still contains the original 2013 version of The Stanley Parable. Many of these jokes hold up well since the things it is mocking are still present. It jabs at the meaningless nature of achievements and mostly serves as a commentary of the illusion of choice the medium offers. And since games still have achievements and offer up false choices, these barbs haven’t lost their sting, even if they aren’t quite as surprising as they were then. They’re still effective because of the quality of the writing and Kevan Brighting’s superb and boisterous performance as The Narrator where he emphatically bellows those well-written lines at the player.

The Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe Review: A Rerelease That Brilliantly Skewers Rereleases

However, Ultra Deluxe doesn’t lose sight of being a rerelease. After players run through the base game a few times, a door labeled “New Content” opens up and leads to a segment that falls completely flat. The Narrator then calls out cheap video game developers for rushing out an expansion and is as profoundly disappointed as the player probably is.

But it’s all on purpose. This intentional and funny faceplant takes aim at the score of rereleases that flood the industry since many are just cheap ports of the exact same game. It even takes a shot at the buggy ones in a very Stanley Parable way (which has an excellent and rewarding payoff). Many hardly have anything new and are seemingly only meant to weaponize nostalgia, using as little as possible to squeeze money out of existing fans.

Ultra Deluxe knows this and pretends it is doing just that by disappointing them right off the bat and then defensively retreating to a physicalized manifestation of nostalgia complete with real glowing press reviews and awards the game won (and, cheekily, one it didn’t). It then shatters those rose-colored glasses by also offering up actual negative Steam reviews and, after accurately eviscerating the idea of them through an incredible monolog, it then decides to try and undo the damage done to the brand by its bad new content.

This “bad new content” is actually great new content in disguise since it is offering up what The Stanley Parable does so well: a biting and superbly written examination of the medium. By saying Ultra Deluxe is a slapdash port in a funny way and pointing out the ways in which these kinds of ports fail, it’s able to provide the content it jokingly pretends it doesn’t have since the jokes here are the content. It trades targeting the medium as a whole and the fake choices in it and hones in on rereleases instead. This change results in significantly fewer decisions to make and even though that means it doesn’t have many branches, it still works because the content that is here is built for serving other purposes.

The Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe Review: A Rerelease That Brilliantly Skewers Rereleases

Yet it doesn’t just stop there. Its aforementioned attempt to make up for the broken promises of Ultra Deluxe leads to it tackling sequels and the ideas surrounding them, which opens up the door for tons of other well-constructed gags. It roasts follow-ups the same way it roasts rehashed ports by channeling its clever wit through an array of poignant jokes. All of its sequel ideas are terrible and gaudy, but, again, that’s the point. Through these ludicrously abysmal ideas, it further draws attention to the absurdity behind the game industry’s approach to sequels by dialing it up to 11 and is entertaining, if not downright hilarious, every single time.

And even though it isn’t a sequel in name, Ultra Deluxe basically is one. It adds some unexpected bits to the core The Stanley Parable experience, has whole new sections, and intelligently finds a way to reskin the base game near the end. All of this together does make Ultra Deluxe the ultimate edition it is advertised as, but enough of a sequel, too. Its hesitancy to slap a number on the box is seemingly explored through its anti-sequel segments. It’s almost as if Crows Crows Crows knew following up The Stanley Parable would be difficult, but wanted to do it anyway, knowing it could only get away with it if it had solid enough jokes and could hide it in something marketed as a port.

It’s a defense mechanism that works because The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe is crafty enough to pull it off. Even though the rudimentary visuals are undoubtedly dated, it works as a rerelease because of how accurately it translates the main game and brings it to new platforms. But it also functions as a faux sequel because of the amount of new content in it. Through its thoroughly engaging writing and cutting commentary, The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe is able to make fun of exactly what it is and get away with it, allowing the game to have its cake and eat it, too.

SCORE: 9/10

As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 9 equates to “Excellent.” Entertainment that reaches this level is at the top of its type. The gold standard that every creator aims to reach.

Sam Raimi Reflects on Why Spider-Man 4 Didn’t Happen

Sam Raimi is getting ready for the premiere of his next film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but due to the massive success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Raimi’s past Spider-Man franchise is a big topic of conversation.

RELATED: Doctor Strange 2: Disney Refuses to Cut 12-Second Scene in Saudi Arabia

In a recent interview with Moviepilot, Raimi was asked about what a potential fourth entry in the Spider-Man franchise would have looked like. According to Raimi, they did have a script ready for the film, but due to a combination of Raimi feeling that he compromised on things for Spider-Man 3 and the script not being ready, it just never came to be.

“Oh yeah, we had a script years ago and we were actively working in pre-production. It’s just … it became a thing where there was a deadline and I didn’t want to make something that was less than great. I thought I had compromised a bit on Spider-Man 3 and I wanted to really pay the audience back on Spider-Man 4 and make the best Spider-Man of all. And I couldn’t get the script together in that amount of time. So I told Sony, ‘I think it’s best if you go ahead with your planned alternate Spider-Man storyline, because I don’t want to let the audience down.’”

When it comes to potentially making another film in the Spider-Man franchise, Raimi said that while he may not have seen it happening in the past, with the arrival and inclusion of the multiverse into the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, anything is possible.

“I didn’t think it was possible, but after jumping back in with the Multiverse, I realized that anything is possible now, so I’m completely open to it.”

Raimi’s next film will be Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which sees the return of Benedict Cumberbatch as he reprises his role as Dr. Stephen Strange. This time the Sorcerer Supreme will be joined by Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff, who has finally transformed into the Scarlet Witch during the WandaVision finale.

“In the film, the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before,” reads the synopsis. “Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sees the return of Benedict Cumberbatch in his role as Dr. Stephen Strange. This time, the Sorcerer Supreme will join Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff, who finally transformed into the Scarlet Witch during the WandaVision finale.

Additional cast includes MCU alums Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, and Rachel McAdams, who are reprising their roles as Karl Mordo, Wong, and Dr. Christine Palmer, respectively. It will also feature the live-action debut of Marvel hero America Chavez, who will be portrayed by newcomer Xochitl Gomez (The Baby-Sitters Club).

Tom Hiddleston Doesn’t Know Whether or Not Loki Will Appear in Thor: Love and Thunder

The upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder is set to feature a ton of characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One actor unsure of his appearance in the film, however, is Loki himself, Tom Hiddleston.

RELATED: What Thor: Love and Thunder Should Use & Avoid from The Mighty Thor Comics

Speaking to Total Film for their latest issue, Hiddleston said that he honestly wasn’t sure whether or not he would appear in the upcoming Thor film. Further, Hiddleston even joked a bit, saying that he wasn’t “doing an Andrew Garfield,” referring to the British actor’s now-infamous job of constantly lying about his appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

“I’m living in a question mark,” Hiddleston said. “It’s all unknown. You know, I used to think that I could predict these things, but I literally have no idea. And I’m not even doing an Andrew Garfield! I just don’t know.”

Despite the fact that Hiddleston doesn’t know, he does know that he enjoys playing the character of Loki, calling it “a source of eternal surprise and delight.”

“We made some new, bold choices,” said Hiddleston of the Disney+ series Loki. “Loki goes on a really big, internal journey that felt very new and fresh. And I thought, ‘I would like to explore this kind of story, whether it’s Loki or not. But the fact that it’s Loki is even more interesting.’

“[Plyaing Loki] is a source of eternal surprise and delight, the whole journey. It’s absolutely a part of my life now, and will always be. You know, just now in the bathroom, somebody came in, and said, ‘Loki!’ And I said, [indicates to himself] ‘Tom.’ And they went, ‘Sorry. Yeah.’ But it’s what people see.”

Thor: Love and Thunder is once again being directed by Waititi (Jojo Rabbit) from a script he co-wrote with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Someone Great), which will be the follow-up to Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok.

Marvel’s Avengers Celebrates Ramadan With Free Ms. Marvel Skin

Crystal Dynamics is celebrating the end of Ramadan — known as Eid al-Fitr (which fittingly translates to “Festival of Breaking Fast”) — within Marvel’s Avengers. Along with wishing a blessed holiday to those who take part in it, the studio is giving away the Cosmos outfit for Ms. Marvel, the game’s Pakistani-American hero.

The Epic-tier free skin went live in the storefront on April 28 alongside the Asgardian Destroyer Thor costume. As it says on the marketplace, the Cosmos outfit will only be free for a limited time, and while Crystal Dynamics didn’t say exactly when it would go away, it will likely be available until the game’s next store update on May 5 (although Ramadan ends on May 1). The Avengers‘ Twitter account released a short video clip of the skin, letting players admire its purple and dark pink galactic hues in action.

RELATED: Marvel’s Avengers Adds Doctor Strange-Themed Outfit to Hulk’s Wardrobe

Ms. Marvel’s Disney+ show is still slated for June, which will probably be around the time the game gets an outfit inspired by said series. A prominent Avengers leaker also stated that Ms. Marvel is set to get two other skins in the future: one with her wearing civilian clothes and another that puts the stretchy hero in a Kree Stormranger suit.

Players are still waiting for more substantial content for the game. Even though Crystal Dynamics said that Lady Thor is coming, the team gave no release window. She-Hulk was reportedly in production and then pushed to align with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has only seemingly elongated the wait for more meaty content.

Memory Interview: Liam Neeson Discusses Latest Action Film

The latest Liam Neeson-led action film Memory is out in theaters today. Directed by the legendary Martin Campbell, the film stars Neeson, Guy Pearce, Monica Bellucci, Taj Atwal, Ray Fearon, and Harold Torres.

Memory follows Alex Lewis (Liam Neeson), an expert assassin with a reputation for discreet precision. Caught in a moral quagmire, Alex refuses to complete a job that violates his code and must quickly hunt down and kill the people who hired him before they and FBI agent Vincent Serra (Guy Pearce) find him first,” says the official synopsis. “Alex is built for revenge but, with a memory that is beginning to falter, he is forced to question his every action, blurring the line between right and wrong.”

ComingSoon’s Jonathan Sim spoke with Memory star Liam Neeson about his portrayal of the character, his future, and what underappreciated movie he wants fans to check out.

Jonathan Sim: You play Alex Lewis, an expert assassin with memory loss in this film. What was it about this character that made you want to play him?

Liam Neeson: I like the idea of, yes, he’s an assassin, he’s a precision expert at taking out bad guys. But this extra layer of the fact that he’s suffering from, at the early stages, Alzheimer’s disease, with dementia put in there as well. So it was interesting to do research on that affliction and it is horrible and terrible. So I watched some documentaries on Alzheimer’s. I also have a friend back home in Ireland who’s going through the early stages of dementia himself. He’s a friend, but I felt a bit guilty about using little bits of what I saw him doing. I tried to introduce him to the film in a very, very subtle way, hopefully. But it’s just always interesting to play a character who’s never just black or white, there are shades of gray, morally speaking as to the actions he takes and he’s very much a man who’s been doing this job of assassinations for 40 years, but he knows the end is coming to his life and he wants to find some kind of redemption, I think.

I really do like that about the character. It’s a very interesting morally ambiguous character. What I’ve also loved is that when you made Taken, your career went down a new path, filled with action movies, where you get to play these super tough guys with their particular set of skills. From now on, would you like to continue making action movies like Memory, or would you like to explore other genres, like comedy, or would you maybe want to revisit an old character like Qui-Gon Jinn?

Well, I’m interested in comedy. Seth McFarlane has approached me about maybe, I think Paramount Studios had asked Seth, would he be interested in resurrecting in the Naked Gun series, or a film based on Naked Gun, so he asked me if I’d be interested in playing the Leslie Nielsen character, which are huge shoes to fill, so we’re hoping that’ll maybe come together in the next year or two years.

You have an incredible filmography behind you. Is there any movie you made that you’re proud of that you feel is underappreciated and maybe you want more are people to see?

Well, I made a film called Michael Collins with Neil Jordan. Oh my gosh, 26-27 years ago. That’s a personal favorite of mine, because he was one of the founders of the modern Irish state. He’s highly controversial because he is regarded as one of the founders, if that’s the right word, of modern-day terrorism in that he kind of invented little cells, pockets of cells, two people, three people, all fighting for the same cause, but each cell didn’t know what the other was doing because the fear of informers, so Collins invented that and it’s been adopted, as we know, all over the world. He’s, as I say, very controversial figure, he died in 1922 at the age of 31. But I was fascinated by that character, fascinated by it. I love the movie Michael Collins. I love it.

Lionsgate announced the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes release date for the upcoming Hunger Games prequel film during CinemaCon today.

It is based on the prequel novel by Suzanne Collins, which was released in 2020.

Marvel’s Avengers’ Thor Gets a Flashy New Skin from the Comics

Marvel’s Avengers‘ Thor may almost have a complete array of different Marvel Cinematic Universe skins, but there are still many from the comics to choose from. Crystal Dynamics recently did just that by going to a 35-year-old comic in order to make the Asgardian Destroy skin for the hammer-wielding Avenger.

Thor’s Asgardian Destroyer skin from 1987’s “Thor Vol. 1 #381.” is now on the marketplace for 1,400 credits, which is around $14. The outfit puts him in armor that’s quite different than the ones currently in the game, which addresses a common complaint leveled at the title. Users have also noticed that his belt and eyes glow when he activates Odinforce, a skill that uses lightning to counter incoming attacks.

The MCU skins are still coming in at a somewhat rapid pace, as Thor got another MCU skin earlier this month. However, it seems as though the team is also trying to go back to adding more comics-oriented outfits, as evidenced by last week’s Gray Hulk skin.

This onslaught of eye-catching or recognizable skins might be to compensate for the game’s lack of big updates. Even though Jane Foster is coming down the line, fans have been waiting for a roadmap that is not coming, as Crystal Dynamics said it is shifting its plans to give smaller updates on features that are closer to release. She-Hulk is also rumored to be in the works, but she has reportedly been pushed in order to better line up with the MCU.

Moon Knight Episode 5 Reaction, Thoughts, and Theories

Moon Knight continues to dazzle in with its intricate storytelling, unique characters, and clever visual flourishes. This week’s penultimate episode, titled “The Asylum,” makes good on its name and spends its entire runtime within the creepy hospital Marc/Steven found themselves in last week. Will Marc/Steven make it out alive? Let’s make like an Egyptian hippo and do this!

Very quickly, I think it’s important to point out how different this show has been from the four other Marvel series in that it’s the first not driven by familiar tropes — cameos, action, and comedy. Yet, all five boil down to fascinating character studies. WandaVision dealt with Wanda’s grief over losing Vision, Loki followed our favorite villain in his quest to break his cyclical nature, Falcon allowed Sam to come to terms with his new role as Captain America (and gave Bucky time to forgive himself for past crimes), and Hawkeye provided an opportunity for Clint to put his past demons away for good. Whether any of these shows actually accomplished their objective in a satisfying manner is a completely different discussion.

MORE: Shazam! Fury of the Gods Release Date Shifted Once Again

In its fifth episode, Moon Knight trumps them all by quite literally transforming into a full-on psychiatric evaluation. In this case, we’re stuck in Marc/Steven’s mind as he tries to reconcile his tragic past and understand the wild journey that ultimately led to his transformation to Moon Knight. It’s riveting, nerve-racking and unlike anything I’ve seen before from the Marvel studio, which is probably why I love the show so much.

Marc

“The Asylum” kicks off with an eerie shot of some water while a young voice cries out for help. We get a brief shot of a woman staring directly into the camera shouting, “This is all your fault!” followed by a smash cut to that Hippo creature we saw right before the end of the last episode. Then, we’re back in Dr. Harrow’s office with Marc where we’re told his mind is “violently vacillating between sense and nonsense.” His life is a fantasy, you see? Or, at least, that’s what the good doctor (played by Ethan Hawke) wants him to believe.

“The struggling mind will often build places to seek shelter for different aspects of the self from our most traumatic memories,” Harrow explains.

Like, “a psych ward,” Marc shoots back.

Touché.

Harrow then mentions a boy, presumably the voice we heard at the beginning of the episode, and this sets Marc off. The orderlies come in and sedate him and we cut back to Marc and Steven screaming at the hippo Taweret (voiced by Antonia Salib). “Wow, these meds are really amazing,” Marc says.

“So, are you two, like, twins,” Taweret asks (though it should be noted that the episode subtitles merely refer to her as Hippo).

“Well, yes, sort of,” Steven says and I’m immediately angry that they didn’t resort to a Forrest Gump-esque, “No, ma’am, we are not relations.”

Taweret, the goddess of women and children, explains that Marc is dead and stuck in the realm of the Duat, the Egyptian underworld. Her job is to guide Marc/Steven to the afterlife following their fatal bullet wound sustained during an encounter with antagonist Arthur Harrow. Taweret explains that this is only an afterlife and notes there are many intersectional planes of untethered consciousness. This is the content I’m here for.

I dig this hippo. Nay, I dig the way the episode uses the hippo. At first, I was afraid she was going to be a jokey punchline. Thankfully, following her initial introduction, Taweret plays it fairly straight and is mostly a dolled-up bit of walking exposition that works remarkably well.

Another fun note is the various way Marc and Steven react to Taweret’s notes. Marc, always so intense, paces angrily, while Steven stands fixated on the creature. “Why would we picture the afterlife as a psychiatric hospital,” the latter asks.

“Because we’re insane,” Marc deadpans. He’s not really wrong. Though, as we learn throughout the episode, Marc is most definitely not insane, just broken — both literally and figuratively. We’ll get to that.

Anyways, Marc goes on a tangent and angrily kicks open some doors and discovers the real truth — he is indeed dead and they are traveling over the sands of Egypt on a large Khufu ship headed to the underworld. More specifically, A’Aru, or The Field of Reeds. All of this info is stored inside Marc’s brain, but only manifests itself through Steven.

Taweret proceeds to reach into Marc and Steven’s chest and removes their (bloodless) hearts and happily notes she did not blow their chests wide open. Was that an actual thing that would happen? The goddess weighs their hearts on the Scales of Justice to determine if they’ll travel to paradise or get tossed overboard to their doom. We get a shot of the gloomy desert sands containing bodies that have been frozen for all time — shout out to the production team for the terrific visuals.

After weighing the hearts, Taweret explains neither organ is full. Both men have some unfinished business they need to solve or risk losing their souls to Duat. Conveniently, the ship houses all their memories, leading to an Inception-like journey to the past where we learn, well, everything.

Psych Ward

Back inside, Steven is the first to ask about Layla. Marc notes that she’ll likely go on a suicide mission to stop Arthur, but they need to focus on the task at hand: balancing the scales.

There’s a great bit where they peer through windows and see Marc’s memories — some of which Steven doesn’t recognize. They hear the voice of the young boy from the beginning of the episode and hop through a door where they encounter a room comprised of Marc’s victims — or those he killed for Khonshu.

“You remember them all,” Steven asks. “You try killing someone,” Marc shoots back.

A young boy appears in the room and Steven gives chase, happening upon a young Marc and his brother Randall (as well as his mother and JJ Abrams). The two young boys hop into a Stephen King-styled cave, replete with bird bones at the entrance, which is all well and good except its raining and causing the local to flood.

In one helluva dark scene, Steven watches helplessly as Randall, aka RoRo, drowns.

Back with Marc, he enters another room containing Randall’s wake where Marc-as-a-child endures his mother’s wrath — the scene from the beginning of the episode with the screaming woman. “This is all your fault,” the distraught woman cries. “You were supposed to keep him safe!”

This is all news to Steven, which is our first clue that he’s not the main operator of this body. We see other sad events — a series of horrible birthdays during which Marc’s mother behaved horribly. “Why do you remember her like that,” Steven cries. “She wasn’t like that!”

Then, the big one.

We see Marc’s death, incurred during his days as a mercenary. Bloodied and dying, Marc stumbles into a tomb surrounded by corpses, including Layla’s dad, and encounters Khonshu for the first time. “I am the god Khonshu in search of a warrior.”

This is a pretty hardcore origin story.

“That sneaky old vulture,” Steven says, “he was manipulating you from the start.”

Marc agrees to Khonshu’s terms and we get a great shot of the dying man rising as Moon Knight. Epic, but also deeply tragic.

Taweret

Back atop the ship, souls are dropping into the desert-like flies. Apparently, Arthur is judging and condemning souls before their time. Taweret agrees to turn the ship around in order to help Marc/Steven stop Arthur.

Dr. Harrow

Marc freaks out again and wakes up in Dr. Harrow’s office, still trying to determine how much of the episode is in his mind. The good doctor asks the fundamental question: “Do you think you created Steven to hide from all the awful things you feel you’ve done in your life, or do you think Steven created Marc to punish the world for what your mother did to you?”

Cue mysterious music.

Marc/Steven

We see young Marc huddled in his room, a memory Steven doesn’t recollect even if he remembers the location. A pounding at the door interrupts the silence — it’s mother, and she’s not happy. Young Marc’s eyes roll back and he transforms into … Steven Grant, a character he subconsciously creates based on a hero from the film Tomb Buster (the poster hangs on his wall). So, this is the answer to all the riddles … Steven is Marc’s creation. Not the other way around.

“You made me up,” Steven asks and Marc can only look on in despair as his (mostly) imaginary friend learns the truth. Mother breaks through the door and proceeds to beat the young child. “You’re not meant to see that, that’s the whole point of you,” Marc explains to Steven. “You got to live a life … believing that your mother loved you … that she’s still alive!”

Whoa. The old lady is dead. Steven has been talking to a ghost, living a fake (albeit happy) life.

As a side, I love the camera work in this scene. We seamlessly pan back and forth to Oscar Isaac talking to himself and are never taken out of the moment. Exceptional work.

Steven

Back in Dr. Harrow’s office, Steven assumes control. We’ve gone full A Beautiful Mind now and witness a full-on conversation between Steven and the good doctor. This is such a strangely engrossing scene. Everyone involved absolutely sells the moment. The bit where Steven tries to speak to his mother but tearfully admits, “My mum is dead,” is extremely heartbreaking.

We cut to mother’s funeral and see Marc bitterly lingering outside. He breaks down and then suddenly transforms into Steven, who happily calls his (imaginary) mum and tells her he’s lost. (Is she the third personality? The one murdering everyone?) Present-day Steven sees this whole moment play out and quickly realizes the truth. He consoles Marc (who appears quite literally out of thin air) and tells him, “None of this is your fault.” So seamless are the effects and so believable is Isaac that it’s hard to forget we’re watching one actor.

Taweret

The ship suddenly stops. Taweret explains she can’t help anymore but admits she was really rooting for them.

We get a brief action sequence between Marc/Steven and the unbalanced souls seeking their soul. The sandy baddies crawl into the ship and Marc attempts to ward them off. Eventually, Steven realizes he has Marc’s power because he is indeed Marc and plays the hero role remarkably well.

Unfortunately, he leaps overboard trying to save Marc and ends up frozen in the underworld. The scales balance and Marc finds himself standing in that wheat field next to Maximus amidst a beautiful sunrise. Cut to credits.

Other Notes

  • Good hell, there was a lot to digest here. Honestly, following the previous Marvel shows I didn’t have super high hopes for this one, but am pleasantly surprised. Even blown away. Quiet character dramas are my jam. That’s why I loved Severance, Better Call Saul, the first five seasons of Game of Thrones, and the like — shows that usurp cheesy action in favor of quiet character interactions and big ideas. Now, I understand the negative reactions from viewers. The ads promised a Batman-esque action series adorned in Marvel’s signature rambunctious style. Instead, Moon Knight has veered wildly from the norm and delivered a psychological drama devoid of any connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  I understand the disappointment from those expecting traditional high adventure, even if I’m digging the results.
  • I love Ethan Hawke’s performance as Dr. Harrow. He’s just a nice, unassuming man doing his job. He’s a watered-down version of Arthur but boasts the same pragmatic sensibilities.
  • A third personality exists, right? Or am I making that up? I’m starting to think it’s Marc’s mother who occasionally takes control and dishes out violent justice on Khonshu’s behalf. Perhaps that’s the part of Marc/Steven that appealed to the cantankerous god. It also makes sense that he would select Layla as Marc’s successor, assuming he has a thing for violent women.
  • Where is all of this going? After the tremendous buildup, you can’t end this series on a typical action beat. There has to be so much more to come in the final episode. To quote Jessie Spano: “I’m so excited and so … scared.” Come on Marvel, don’t botch the landing!
  • After this episode, I sincerely hope the creators don’t take the simple route and kill off Marc. The character has grown so much over these last few episodes, I think it would be more fascinating to see how he deals with life moving forward than tying his story up with a convenient, Hollywood-sized bow.
  • No joke, this is the first MCU series I’m eager to go back and watch again. I can’t say enough about Oscar Isaac’s performance, the directing, and the production design. The handling of Marc’s dissociative identity disorder is also tastefully done, and never exploited for a cheap laugh or thrill. Kudos to all involved.
  • Steven can’t be dead, can he? On the one hand, there’s no way that character could go on living in his mostly fictitious world … on the other, now that he knows the truth, it does make sense that he would take over Marc’s body completely (hopefully, with Layla) and let his world-weary counterpart enjoy a well-earned rest following his final adventure.
    • I still think Layla takes over the suit, for what it’s worth. Steven won’t want to be a servant of Khonshu and Marc is just too tired to continue the endeavor. I think Layla strikes some sort of agreement with the moon god that allows her to possess his power without succumbing to his wrath or control. We’ll see.
    • I was kind of right that Steven would sacrifice himself to save Marc … or maybe I had it the other way around. However, I certainly didn’t expect it this early.

Sniper Elite 5 Preview: A Bit Like Metal Gear Solid V, but With Less Polish & Depth

Sniper Elite 4 was a big reinvention for the stealth series that took it into a more open space. It was the first entry after Metal Gear Solid V, which redefined the genre, and the influences from Hideo Kojima’s last Metal Gear game showed. Sniper Elite 4 wasn’t nearly as polished or deep, but it was a passable alternative. Sniper Elite 5 is positioned as a more refined installment and while it is in some cases, it still seems like its aim is a little off.

The basics are still relatively on the mark, though. Aiming is smooth, as Karl Fairburne is able to aim and snipe slightly more efficiently than in past games. In addition to being able to empty his lungs for a more stable shot, it’s now possible to quickly snap into a first-person perspective with firearms other than a sniper rifle, making the whole arsenal a little more accurate and in line with Sniper Elite’s whole schtick. It’s helpful since the crosshairs for these weapons are too large to get a reliable bead.

Sniper Elite 5 Preview: Like Metal Gear Solid V, but Less Polished

Fairburne is still able to crouch, crawl, and climb about as he finds vantage point in one of the game’s hills or perches. Rebellion Developments said it looked at adding even more of these options so players could better engage with its stealthy elements. The French château in one of the levels does show this off quite well, as the vertical nature of the building has all manners of vines and ladders strewn about it. While it would take hours to fully tinker around every corner of the level in search of these more concealed paths, there seemed to be enough of them to elevate it beyond a straightforward shooter. As it is in the Hitman games, one run is not enough to properly assess its depth and it looks to be somewhat on the right track.

MORE: Predator: Hunting Grounds Is Less Janky & More Fun 2 Years Later

Rebellion claimed that this approach was deliberate and exploring can even offer detailed-oriented players additional narratives or items, although, given the storytelling chops of the series, the former might not be worth the extra time pilfering. But some of these conversations will also reveal more about the mission, which means that these out-of-the-way discussions might have useful gameplay benefits to reward those who sneak around. Players can miss these entirely, but according to Rebellion, it’s all part of the benefits of making such a sandbox.

“It is all about offering options to the player so they can approach each facet of the mission in a way that best suits their playstyle. Having watched a number of the recent play sessions, no two people approach the game in the same way and the sandbox nature of the gameplay enables that. While some players will want to be cautious and plan everything carefully before executing, there are others that are far more ‘run and gun.’ We want to offer options for all kinds of players.”

These options extend to the settings. Sniper Elite 5 has a stunning amount of individual knobs to tweak, from enemy resilience to throwing out partially empty clip, so snipers can make the game as simple or as hardcore as they want. Sniper Elite 4 was also quite customizable, so these features aren’t entirely new, but it’s great for a game like this lean into its hardcore roots while also having the potential to appeal those outside of that niche.

One of those options is in its new Invasion mode that, like Dark Souls or Deathloop, randomly drops in a human opponent that can stalk the host. While it wasn’t available in the demo, this has the potential to add pressure that A.I. simply cannot match, which meshes nicely with the tension inherent to being a sniper. Rebellion said it had been toying with the idea for a bit and liked the stories it was able to tell. For example, one invader during testing imitated the A.I. by walking rigidly along a path, which fooled the other player and spelled the host’s demise.

“Once you get the notification that you have been invaded the tension immediately ramps up. You start to question every move you are making and everything that you can see. It can completely change your approach to the mission and your playstyle.”

Whether it’s sniping at an invader or enemy soldier, shooting at long ranges is still a big part of the game, despite how the series has branched out over the years. Lining up a shot over a vast distance is still immensely rewarding mostly because of the franchise’s iconic slow motion kill cam that zooms into the action and lets players get an intimate look at stomachs popping and testicles exploding. Even though this system has been around since the first entry in some form, it still hasn’t gotten old and serves as a great, crunchy reward for nailing a target. Rebellion extrapolated on how it has advanced this brilliant system (which they compared to scoring a goal in FIFA) in small yet effective ways.

“For Sniper Elite 5 we have upped the realism and the grisliness as bullets can now deflect off bones causing even more damage as you also see more detail on the skeleton. For the first time you also get a kill cam for particularly awesome SMG and pistol kills which is easily one of the most requested features from our community. During testing, their inclusion felt like a natural evolution and provides great satisfaction when you nail a shot.”

Even though watching Nazi organs get pureed in slow motion is endlessly gratifying, Sniper Elite 5 is also letting players go the complete opposite way since it has non-lethal takedowns and ammo types. The stealth genre thrives on more choices, but these benefits might be more theoretical here, given the lack of a narrative justification for sparing a faction as evil as the Nazis. Stealth games like Dishonored or Hitman make the choice between killing and not killing a more difficult dilemma. But Nazis aren’t complicated and that’s one of the reasons World War II is an oft-used setting for the medium; the conflict has a clear and easy villain to slaughter that the game doesn’t need to spend much time explaining.

It’s jarring and there didn’t seem to be many noticeable gameplay-oriented reasons to pacify them, either, but those have the possibility to unfold over time as its sandbox and arsenal opens up. It does appear to solely be there as an optional challenge players can layer upon themselves if they so choose. That’s essentially what Rebellion said when asked about it, and, even though the team didn’t speak to the disconnect inherent to it, stated it found out during testing that not everyone wants to go on a mass murdering spree. Replayability and freedom were the primary drivers.

“The main reason for the non-lethal options is to give the player choice about the way that they play the game. Sniper Elite 5 is a sandbox full of ‘toys’ but we want to leave it up to the player about how they approach each mission and scenario. We also want to encourage players to revisit missions and replay them with a different approach and play style, so non-lethal options add even further to this replayability.”

The sandbox itself still needs to be fully dissected, but there were some oddities that held it back. Enemy A.I. varies from pretty smart to painfully stupid or cheap. For example, throwing a body in an empty basement caused a cavalcade of guards to storm in from the top floors, which is as frustrating as it is unrealistic. Some parts of the levels have a lot of open space that is unengaging to crawl through and an easy way to get spotted by its hyperaware enemies. Weird hit detection, inopportune autosaves in the middle of firefights, fussy button prompts, and more oddities all contribute to an unquantifiable but ever-present layer of cruft that’s hard to shake.

Rebellion’s games are often flimsy like that, so it’s not surprising to see Sniper Elite 5 suffer from similar issues, even if it does seem like one of the studio’s better games. Its attempts to snipe Snake out of the throne of the open-world stealth genre are hard to ignore, as it is obviously borrowing from the last Metal Gear Solid. But there are worse games to pull from and Sniper Elite 5 seems to have some of its own flair, even if it is sometimes obfuscated by a fog of jank. It just remains to be seen if that fog is thick enough to throw off the shot of this long-running sniper series.
