Fan-Made Bloodborne Demake Gets Release Date

Sony has not made an official comment about updating Bloodborne for the PlayStation 5, so some fans went and did the opposite. The fan-led Bloodborne PlayStation 1-era demake, dubbed Bloodborne PSX, has been in the works for quite some time now and has finally gotten a release date. It will be coming out for free on January 31, 2022 on PC.

The game’s coder, Lilith Walther, who goes by b0tster on Twitter, tweeted out the release date trailer, which is posted below. The trailer shows gameplay captured within the title’s introductory hours and will be recognizable to those who have played FromSoftware’s PS4 original. And the trailer only contains bits from the early sections because the full release will just have up to the first two bosses. However, don’t expect an exact recreation because Walther said she wanted to “change things to emulate PS1 design sensibilities due to hardware restrictions and cultural differences back then as well.”

The project originally started in 2017 and then was halted before being fully restarted in January 2021. Walther has been open about the project, sharing development secrets on her Twitter account, Curious Cat page, and the game’s Discord server. She’s talked about how she used Solid Snake’s model from Metal Gear Solid and Irvine’s character model from Final Fantasy VIII as references for the Hunter in Bloodborne PSX, how texture mapping works to make it look like a PS1 game, the addition of a double-barrel shotgun, how viral mockups of the game inspired her to make it, and more.

Halloween Favorites Invade DEG’s Watched at Home Top 20 List

The week before Halloween once again saw audiences predictably clamoring for classic flicks such as Hocus Pocus (No. 14), 1978’s Halloween (No. 15), and Beetlejuice (No. 16) on DEG’s Top 20 Watched at Home List. In that regard, it was unsurprising to see Wes Craven’s 1996 hit Scream make its debut at No. 17, as it remains one of the more memorable slasher films of the modern age — that new Scream trailer also helped.

Otherwise, the only notable bit of news for this week’s list was F9: The Fast Saga’s sudden drop to No. 5 after several weeks in the top three. The Vin Diesel action pic was leapfrogged by Old (No. 2), Snake Eyes (No. 3), and Injustice (No. 4), while Free Guy claimed the top spot once more.

DEG compiles the ‘Watched at Home Top 20’ list with the most widely consumed titles on disc and digital during the previous week (except for outside subscription-based streaming platforms). Assembled with the newest studio and retailer data every seven days, it showcases current consumer enthusiasm for home viewing of the newest film and television releases.

  1. Free Guy (20th Century Studios)
  2. Old (Universal)
  3. Snake Eyes (Paramount)
  4. Injustice (Warner Bros.)
  5. F9: The Fast Saga (Universal)
  6. After We Fell (Vertical Entertainment)
  7. Halloween (2018, Universal)
  8. Space Jam: A New Legacy (Warner Bros.)

Call of Duty: Vanguard Season One Content, New Warzone Map Detailed

When Call of Duty: Vanguard launches next week, it’ll do so with a brand new map for the incredibly popular Warzone mode. Ahead of that, Activision has detailed some of the upcoming changes to the mode.

RELATED: Call of Duty: Vanguard Zombies Trailer Highlights Next Chapter in Dark Aether Story

In a new post over on the PlayStation Blog, Daniel Noel — writer for Activision — teased some of what to expect when Call of Duty: Vanguard’s Season One releases on November 5, the same day the game releases. While there will be new content coming to the campaign and the usual updates to multiplayer and the Zombies mode, the biggest piece of news comes in the new Call of Duty Warzone map.

Dubbed Caldera, the new map is filled with lush forests, rocky mountains, and a dormant volcano towering over the land. The new map features over 200+ points of interest and is roughly the same size as Verdansk, the map that Warzone has been using since its launch. Alongside the new map, new modes, Vanguard Royale, and Vanguard Plunder will also arrive in Warzone when the map does.

Activision Details Call of Duty: Vanguard Season One Content, New Warzone Map

Caldera will become playable for Vanguard owners on December 2, 2021, at 9 a.m. PT, and will launch for all players on December 3, 2021, at 9 a.m. PT. To celebrate the launch, a “Secrets of the Pacific” event will kick off on November 24, 2021, in Warzone. Players will be able to take part in the limited-time event simply by playing the game and can learn more about the map by discovering pieces of information hidden on Verdansk.

Besides the new Warzone map, Activision also revealed that Shipment, the fan-favorite Call of Duty map, will make its way into Vanguard on November 17. The map will be a re-fitted map to match the World War II aesthetic of Vanguard and will be free for all players. A brand new Battle Pass will also be available starting on December 2, allowing players to earn new gear, blueprints, and other content across both Vanguard and Warzone.

Dune Tops Halloween Box Office, My Hero Academia Impresses in First Week

Deadline reports that Denis Villeneuve’s Dune took in $15.5 million in its second weekend at the domestic box office, down a whopping 62%, which was more or less expected given the film’s availability on HBO Max and the Halloween holiday negatively impacting the box office. The sci-fi epic, based on Frank Herbert’s classic novel, has earned $69.4 million domestically thus far and is nearing the $300 million mark worldwide, which was successful enough for Warners and Legendary to green lite a sequel.

Dune is 16% ahead of Legendary’s Godzilla vs. Kong, which eventually crossed $100 million after 13 weekends, with $17 million of its domestic gross stemming from Imax. Globally, Dune has earned $43.7 million from the big-screen format.

Newer pics Last Night in Soho and Antlers didn’t produce much excitement, earning $4.16 million apiece from 3,016 and 2,800 theaters, though neither was expected to bring in much business. Though, for Soho, it is disappointing to see a film with so much buzz, featuring the talents of Edgar Wright and Anna Taylor-Joy, perform so poorly. Especially after Wright’s Baby Driver became something of a sleeper hit when it grossed $107.8 million domestically in 2017.

Meanwhile, Funimation’s My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission brought in a 3-day domestic haul of $6.4 million from just 1,600 locations.

Otherwise, Halloween Kills held firm at No. 2 with another $8.5 million to bring its total to an impressive $85.6 million after three weeks, while No Time to Die drew $7.8 million for a $133.3 million domestic total.

Vicarious Visions to Change Name After Merging with Blizzard

Video game developer Vicarious Visions will be losing its name as the company fully merges with Blizzard Entertainment, according to a recent report from Polygon.

MORE: The Mummy Demastered Is an Eerie, Fantastic Game Tie-In That’s Better Than the Movie

The developer was officially merged with Blizzard Entertainment in January, where it worked on the recently released Diablo 2: Resurrected. While the company had been working with Blizzard for some time now, the merger shifted their focus to only working on Blizzard titles.

According to the report, Activision Blizzard informed the employees of Vicarious Visions earlier this week that the studio would be losing its name. The report also mentions that employees within the company were under the impression that despite the merger, Vicarious Visions would be able to keep its name and operate as its own studio.

However, during a recent town hall meeting, the news was confirmed to employees. It’s noted that some employees are speculating that the studio could be renamed Blizzard Albany, as that’s where the studio office is located. While some employees were said to be “disappointed” by the news, none seemed to be too surprised.

Interview: TV Medical Advisor Dr. Oren Gottfried on Chicago Med & The Good Doctor

Dr. Oren Gottfried is a neurosurgeon and television medical advisor as well as an actor and writer. Gottfried has used his medical knowledge to secure positions writing for, appearing in, and serving as a medical consultant on shows including The Good Doctor and Chicago Med. He recently received his first writing credit for The Good Doctor, titled “Waiting.”

ComingSoon’s Jeff Ames had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Oren Gottfried about the different aspects of his career.

Jeff Ames: What led you to become a writer, actor, and medical consultant, and advisor in addition to being a doctor?

Dr. Oren Gottfried: In 2010, I received a cold call from a TV writer asking for help on a pilot. I had just started working as an academic neurosurgeon at Duke University and was very open to new opportunities. I had never thought about working in TV, but I realized that combining my knowledge of medicine and science with my interest in storytelling was a great fit. I helped on this pilot and was asked to help on other shows and projects. One show led to another, and I established my role as a medical consultant.

Soon I realized I could do more than just fact checking and bringing the writers’ stories into a realistic realm — I could craft and pitch original stories as well. I did not just write about interesting diagnoses, presentations, and treatments, but developed full-fledged stories around characters with compelling challenges and ethical and medical dilemmas. Writers valued my pitches and my stories began to find a place on many shows. Eventually, I was given the opportunity to get the “story by” for an entire episode.

Most of my work pitching stories, developing stories with writers, and giving notes on outlines and scripts is done outside of the writers’ room — by Zoom, phone, and email. Occasionally I go onset and help with the production, where I try to really engage with the whole process from writing to the shoot. As I became more comfortable assisting on set, I realized it would be very natural to act like a doctor and appear on air. I started in the background of an OR scene in an important episode and gradually worked up to getting lines and playing slightly bigger roles in very dramatic scenes. Over eleven years, I went from Dr. Gottfried, a neurosurgeon, to also being Dr. Gottfried, a TV neurosurgeon.

MORE: Interview: Composer P. Andrew Willis Discusses Dark Holiday Comedy Uncle Nick

What was it about Chicago Med that made you want to take on an acting role in the series?

I had the good fortune to assist the full-time, on-set Chicago Med clinician consultants on several episodes that included big neurosurgery scenes. I had worked closely with the episode writers, and they asked for me to come full circle and ensure that the scene visually was as authentic as the story. I enjoyed being on set and working with the actors and full production team. I saw an opportunity to take my knowledge of neurosurgery on air.

In one episode, I assisted the TV neurosurgeon and psychiatrist with a complex, awake craniotomy on an anxious patient. I had a ton of screen time, but no lines. Later, I helped with the crafting of another neurosurgery scene on the writer’s end, appeared on air, was granted a character name (Dr. Gottfried), and delivered a line in an important scene with six of the show’s stars.

I feel lucky that there will be more appearances, and I look forward to continuing to help writers and appearing on air. It’s exciting that the lines I say and the scenes I appear in reflect what I have actually said and lived in my real life as a neurosurgeon. The emotions I draw upon to act I have experienced in real life with similar situations.

What was the most challenging aspect of writing for The Good Doctor and how did you overcome that?

It was a unique experience to transition from lead medical consultant who was giving notes to writers, to a crafter who was getting notes on my own story. When it comes to TV medicine, I have a fairly natural grasp of what a story needs and how to make the medical aspects enhance the story instead of detracting from it. However, I do not have as much experience being the primary on my own story. I obviously needed assistance in this new role.

The executive producers who gave me this great opportunity were the writers for the teleplay for this episode, #415. In general, I love being in the writers room and, in this case, Zooming with writers and working through all the levels of the story, from pitch to outline and beyond. Taking on this new role made me very understanding of the process of writing and added to my ability to be a very mindful medical consultant. I am in awe of what full-time writers are able to do on an everyday basis, and this role gave me a greater appreciation and insight into their world. Now, I am much more receptive, aware, and in tune with the beat-to-beat emotional experience of the viewer and the elements of growth of each character because of the situations in the episode. Further, I see things on a more microscopic level and am aware of very tiny nuances.

Do you have any fun, behind-the-scenes stories about acting in Chicago Med?

Even the smallest things were absolutely amazing. It was so fun and educational to go to the set each morning and spend 1:1 time with some of the regular actors. They would ask me how to appear more like a true surgeon in this particular scene, and I would ask them about acting, TV, and their career trajectories. It is fascinating to see the final stories I pitched or helped craft not only on TV, but live on set as well. As an example, a small idea I randomly had at 2:00 a.m. one day on call in the hospital became a major part of the story, and these great actors are performing it. To see it live and in person with all the bright lights is just so cool and still a bit surreal, even though I have been in TV for over a decade.

What were some of the things you learned from consulting on The Good Doctor that you’re excited to apply to future endeavors?

On this show as the lead medical consultant, I work every day with the writers on every episode. I go through the process from story idea to final teleplay, giving medical direction. The process is very extensive and there is a lot of back and forth. The writers have been incredibly patient with me and with the work of getting the medical part accurate.

I have learned to be very flexible with adapting the medical facts to the stories. My medical suggestion or notes one day may not be applicable in the next draft of the script. I am always ready with backup stories or scenarios to adjust to the writer’s needs. I have become very sensitive to reading script or story details and observing closely what the writer wants from their story. I have to really have my senses dialed up to keep the medicine fitting the story but not altering it. I have to always keep the characters consistent and growing from the experiences with the medicine as well.

MORE: The Harder They Fall Interview: Jonathan Majors on Film’s Cyclical Trauma

I feel with this particular show I have engaged closely with the complete writing experience; thus, I have become a better medical consultant. I feel these skills will continue to help me with future projects. I regularly do voluntary work with HHS (Hollywood, Health and Society), and new writers I work with tell me they can see that I am not just dialed into making the medicine accurate, but to enhancing their overall story with the medical recommendations. My answers are not just telling them about good medicine, but what will be very visually and dramatically impactful for their characters and their audience. With very little prompting or explanation from the writers, I try to explain the story they are trying to tell medically and make unique suggestions for their project. I like quickly adapting to new projects and new writers to assist their shows. I strive to advance from just a technical expert or fact checker to more of a creative contributor.

Do you have any other projects coming up that you can share with us?

I continue to help with numerous pilots with great writers and producers who have previous projects I greatly admire. I have helped with several movies in various stages of development. I will return on air as Dr. Gottfried on Chicago Med in the near future. I am working on several other projects that may lead to on air work as well. Also, I advised on an upcoming episode of a popular CBS drama.

The Mummy Demastered Is an Eerie, Fantastic Game Tie-In That’s Better Than the Movie

Metroidvanias come out so frequently that it’s often hard for any one of them to stick out. Movie tie-in games don’t stick out for a much more simple reason: many of them are cheap shovelware. If the movie it’s based on is bad, then its game tie-in is only going to be further ignored and banished to the annals of history in record time. Despite all of this, The Mummy Demastered, the game linked to 2017’s Tom Cruise-led The Mummy, is a great Metroidvania that’s still an excellent, creepier take on the genre.

2017’s The Mummy was a universally panned film. It helped put the nail in the coffin in Universal Studio’s MCU-like Dark Universe and forced the studio to take a different approach to its monsters, which resulted in stand-alone movies like 2020’s The Invisible Man. And when a movie is that forgettable, viewers probably don’t want more of it and a game set in the same universe. No one wants a dirt cake for dessert after eating mud and rock lasagna for dinner, especially when that dessert comes four months after the main course as was the case with the film and game release.

RELATED: 16 Halloween Games from 2021 You Should Play (And 1 You Should Avoid)

Developer WayForward also didn’t have the most even record at that point. It did develop River City Girls and assisted with Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, but those two acclaimed titles hadn’t come out yet, which means most of its success at that time was from its internally developed Shantae series.

While the Shantae games, Aliens: Infestation, Double Dragon Neon, A Boy and His Blob, and Contra 4 are just some of the team’s great titles, they are vastly outnumbered by WayForward’s other projects that mostly consisted of licensed games based on shows for children. The Mummy Demastered just seemed like WayForward being WayForward: making a mediocre game based on a mediocre film or television show; it just wasn’t based on a kid’s show this time.

The Mummy Demastered was releasing to low expectations and seemingly knew that since it opens with its strongest element: its soundtrack, which is one of the best game soundtracks in the last decade. Monomer crafted a spooky score that uses heavy synths and groovy rhythms to evoke a 1980s-esque theme — appropriate for the game’s slick retro art style — and the horror films the Mummy franchise takes from. While present throughout its absolutely amazing soundtrack, this balance of horror and its 1980s aesthetic is made immediately clear in the track that plays over the title screen and gives an accurate sample of the whole experience right off the bat. It’s a tracklist of heaters that leads with its hottest beat.

The gameplay is more traditional, but it’s wonderfully done. Players control a faceless soldier as they try to navigate a series of caves, forests, sewers, labs, and city streets in order to take down Princess Ahmanet, one of the antagonists from the film. In typical search action platformer fashion, players gather abilities in order to reach new areas, occasionally splitting off to grab a secret or hidden upgrade.

Mummy Demastered Is an Eerie, Fantastic Game Tie-In That's Better Than the Movie

Describing it doesn’t do it quite enough justice because it’s more than the sum of its parts. It doesn’t lead players by the nose from objective to objective but does give them a waypoint, which forces players to explore while giving them some sense of direction. The game is also paced well, as powers and new equipment come steadily over its six or seven-hour runtime. These upgrades often include a different weapon or grenade that players even get to choose between depending on what fits their style. These stages end with a climactic boss fight that becomes a decent test of the player’s skill; an aspect that the game could use more of since it’s a bit on the easy side. It’s a tried-and-true loop that Demastered doesn’t exactly innovate in, but executes brilliantly.

WayForward didn’t push way forward with The Mummy Demastered as it is a by-the-numbers, if well-executed, search action platformer. However, it’s still far better than it had any right to be and is one of the best horror-adjacent entries in the genre, an aspect that is further strengthened by its excellent and tonally appropriate soundtrack. The Mummy was a big loss for Universal as it fell short of the $450 million it needed to break even and drove a stake through the heart of the aforementioned Dark Universe, but it at least spawned a solid and underrated video game adaptation.

Eight Picks for Halloween Anime: Spooky Edition

It’s never a bad time to binge anime, but with Halloween right around the corner, there is plenty of great spooky anime to watch to make sure that spooky season ends in a fun way.

RELATED: Case Closed: Detective Conan Essential Episodes to Get Started

Here are eight picks for some great Halloween anime that is easily available on streaming services, although not all of it will leave you shaking in your boots.

Ghost Hunt – Funimation

One of the best supernatural horror series out there, Ghost Hunt follows high school girl Mai who gets pressed into indentured servitude for Kazuya Shibuya, paranormal detective. Along with a cast of ghostbusters of different religions and talents, they set out to free ordinary people from the horrific.

Not only are the characters in Ghost Hunt fun, but the mysteries themselves range from somewhat creepy to downright terrifying. The series does have its lighthearted moments as well, particularly with so many clashing personalities in the cast, but it’s on this list for some moments of sheer terror and excellent writing throughout.

School-Live! – Crunchyroll

As far as psychological horror goes, not much beats Norimitsu Kaihō’s School-Live! This anime follows a delusional high schooler named Yuki that is oblivious to the zombie outbreak that has taken over their city. A dark story that lasts 12 episodes, it’s well worth binging.

Blood-C – Hulu

Blood-C encapsulates the whiplash of the Halloween “Trick or Treat” spirit perfectly. What starts out as a slice of life show about a moderately clumsy girl turns into a gory monster-hunting action fest. While it is a divisive story, spinning off from the mega-popular Blood+ and Blood: The Last Vampire franchises, Blood-C is an interesting mystery that still has plenty of heart and horror.

At only 12 episodes long, it’s perfect for a daylong binge and the dub by Funimation also holds up fairly well. Be warned, it does take a few episodes to warm up and really get going, but it’s worth it.

Witch Hunter Robin – Funimation

Robin is a teenage witch hunter, recently moved to Japan to work for an organization that hunts and captures witches – anyone with telekinetic or ESP powers. Together with her team at STN-J, Robin dives into a dark world of magic, crafts, and murder.

With an enticing plot and a somber, mature tone, it’s easy to get drawn into the mystery surrounding the witches and STN-J. Robin is a sympathetic protagonist and it’s easy to see this strange new world through her eyes, while her colleagues and fellow witch hunters are a colorful bunch of misfits who somehow manage to keep their jobs. While there’s not a lot of outright horror to the title, it’s got that perfect dark and creepy vibe for Halloween.

Hellsing – Hulu/Funimation

While considered by some to be an anime classic, Hellsing is divisive. Are you looking for stylized and bold art? Vampires? Lots of blood and gore? You’ll probably love this. Following the exploits of Alucard and his new vampire servant Seras, they hunt down the evil vampires of the world, working for the titular Hellsing organization.

Gore and violence are in no short supply, and this series is not for the faint of heart. The bold colors create a stark and striking atmosphere and while the anime does deviate from the plotline of the manga, it’s still well worth watching. Think of it like slashers for anime, sit back and enjoy.

D. Gray-man – Hulu

D. Gray-man tells the story of Allen Walker, a member of the Black Order tasked with fighting Akuma and stopping the Millennium Earl from destroying the world. What starts off as a fairly by the books shounen anime gets very dark, very fast, as Allen’s world has no shortage of death and consequences. It’s a horror anime in both style and substance, as many of the moral dilemmas posed to the protagonists have downright damning effects.

With vibrant characters and a fascinating plot, the only downside of this show is that it ends too soon, as the manga is still continuing publication. Fortunately, there is a sequel in the form of D. Gray-man: Hallow, but here’s hoping for another one after the manga is done.

Nyanpire – The Vampire Cat – Crunchyroll

Nyanpire is short but sweet, telling the story of an abandoned cat who nearly dies on the streets, only to be saved by a vampire and given eternal life and turned into a vampire himself. Featuring characters including a fallen angel and a one-eyed samurai, Nyanpire is at no shortage for friends and adventures despite his tragic origin story.

Despite being a vampire, even a cat one, Nyanpire is absolutely hopeless and irresponsible, continually bringing most of his problems on himself. It’s okay though because they’re all solved in four short minutes! The series is also worth watching for the very peculiar live-action outro that seems to have had a great deal of thought put into it, despite lasting for about 60 seconds.

Zombie Loan – RetroCrush/Crunchyroll

Zombie Loan is a fresh twist on what sometimes feels like a genre that is dying, following Michiru Kita as she teams up with the two mysterious and cool boys at school who are actually zombie grim reapers after losing their own lives in a bus accident.

It has elements of the typical afterlife bureaucracy genre, but Michiru’s powers and the boys’ unusual zombie nature keep it interesting to watch. Admittedly, it’s not the most horrifying entry on this list, but it’s definitely a different kind of anime.

That’s it for our list of streaming recommendations, feel free to suggest other great Halloween anime in the comments like Paranoia Agent or School Days.

Antlers Review: A Well Crafted Thriller Worth Checking Out

With spooky season in full swing, October has been giving us plenty of horror movies to sit back and enjoy. Antlers is the newest supernatural horror flick with producer Guillermo del Toro and director Scott Cooper at the helm. The film follows Julia Meadows (Keri Russell) and her brother, Paul (Jesse Plemons), as they grow concerned about one of Julia’s students, who is harboring a dangerous secret.

Movies such as Antlers are a rare breed. An original film that isn’t based on an existing IP while exploring the creature feature genre is not typical. Furthermore, given the movie was filmed three years before its long-delayed release date, it’s a miracle that the film is getting an exclusive theatrical window. Fortunately, the film successfully pulls off what it’s trying to go for with a thrilling series of events that will keep you invested from start to finish.

This movie does an adequate job of combining the genre tropes with some very original thrills. The premise alone is much fresher than many of the typical bump-in-the-night ghost movies that the market has become saturated in. It feels like a story we’ve never seen before, and it is unafraid to be unapologetically strange.

During Antlers‘ opening act, it can feel as if the screenplay is holding the film back from being anything more than conventional. One of the main characters is a child who gets bullied and draws creepy things. None of this is particularly new or exciting, but it feels as if the film is leading the audience down a path of “oh, here we go again” before wowing them with an unconventional story and a creepy atmosphere that lingers throughout the entire runtime.

Many horror films, such as the classic Jaws, hide the monster from the audience for as long as possible, building the suspense and waiting for the perfect moment to show the monster. Instead, Antlers contains moments of tension but also has many scenes that put the monster on full display. In addition, there is a ton of enjoyment to be found in the movie’s excellent creature design and blend of CGI and practical effects.

The film features excellent performances from its entire cast. Russell gives a compelling performance in the lead role, and Jesse Plemons, who has already impressed this year with roles in Judas and the Black Messiah and Jungle Cruise, continues to give authentic, powerful performances that pull you to the screen. Perhaps the biggest surprise is the young Jeremy T. Thomas as Lucas, the young boy in the film who manages to be effectively creepy and carry a lot of the movie on his shoulders.

The film’s issues generally lie in its underbaked themes and characters who are well-developed, but their storylines don’t feel as if they amount to much by the end of it. The story could have gone to deeper places with the brother-sister relationship, but it ultimately never does. However, Antlers remains a well-crafted thriller with some excellent scares and a bone-chilling ending.

SCORE: 7/10

As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 7 equates to “Good.” A successful piece of entertainment that is worth checking out, but it may not appeal to everyone.

Disclosure: Reviewer saw the film at a critic screening for our Antlers review.

PAX South Is Ending for the ‘Foreseeable Future’

There are many types of PAX shows — South, West, Unplugged, East, Australia — but there’s about to be one less. PAX South is ending for the “foreseeable future” as the organizers have decided to cut out the expo in San Antonio, Texas.

The official PAX Twitter account tweeted the news. The note described how the PAX team initially wanted to spread the expo to other cities, including San Antonio in 2015. But despite having the highest attendance for its inaugural year, it didn’t grow after that and “remained the same show that it was when [they] opened it in 2015.” Because of stagnation and the Covid-19 pandemic, they have decided to end the show until further notice. They then thanked the fans and those who came out to the Texas-based version of the convention.

Some users in the replies bemoaned the loss as PAX South was easier to get to than the other shows in Boston and Seattle. One reminisced that its lighter crowds meant attendees could actually play the games there, which, given PAX statement’s, seemed to have contributed to its downfall. Another described how it was a great show for smaller devs because of how the other PAX cities are generally more expensive.

PAX South has always been held in January so this gives attendees just about a two-month notice. PAX in general has been suffering because of the pandemic, which can be most easily shown through pictures of the most recent event in September 2021. The previously crowded venue was rather barren due to safety protocols and likely the general hesitancy to travel to an event and gather with a bunch of other people.

Underappreciated Movies to Watch During Halloween

Halloween is one of the great holidays. It’s spooky, fun and, if we’re being honest, really weird. When else do you get to throw gallons of blood on your person and wander the streets donning a Michael Myers mask? Hint: it’s definitely not Easter.

Yet, for all its wild flavor, Halloween also presents a conundrum each and every year: what films should a reasonably sane person watch in order to celebrate this festive outing? Sure, there are thousands of “scary” movies about serial killers and monsters stalking young, attractive teens, and plenty of Hollywood fare centered around demons and whatnot, but to be quite honest, most of these options — outside the occasional Scream or 1978’s Halloween — suck or are outrageously overrated.

RELATED: 16 Halloween Games from 2021 You Should Play (And 1 You Should Avoid)

As such, for those looking for something a little more unique to spice up All Hallows Eve, here’s a list of vastly underrated Halloween movies to check out this weekend.

Trick ‘r Treat

Trick ‘r Treat tells four interweaving tales that each culminates with some sort of Halloween message forged by the burlap sack-wearing character Sam. And while much of the pic is of the pitch-black dark humor variety, there is still an abundance of scares and creepy moments for genre fans to savor.

In my humble opinion, Michael Dougherty’s Trick ‘r Treat should stand as the go-to movie every Halloween season, and a yearly tradition honored/cherished by the world entire. Instead, the horror-comedy remains grossly disregarded, which is a shame considering the creative prowess on display.

Over the years, the film has emerged as something of a cult hit, but it’s time to spread the word people: Trick ‘r Treat is a Halloween classic and deserves recognition as one of the finer examples of horror filmmaking in recent memory.

ParaNorman

To this day, I have yet to meet a single person who saw ParaNorman, the creepy, but fun stop-motion animated film about a young boy who can see dead people and must use his power to stop an evil witch from destroying his town. Boasting a stellar voice cast, including Kodi Smit-McPhee, Anna Kendrick, Casey Affleck, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Jeff Garlin, the film was released in 2012 to stellar reviews (89% on RottenTomatoes) but managed just $107.1M at the box office against a $60M budget.

Too bad, because this movie works on so many levels and remains a surprisingly edgy PG-rated family pic that offers the perfect blend of thrills, chills, and comedy.

Drag Me to Hell

Oh boy, I love a good Sam Raimi horror flick and 2009’s Drag Me to Hell is no exception. Starring Alison Lohman, Justin Long, and Dileep Rao (aka that guy who randomly appeared in enormous hits Inception and Avatar before vanishing completely), Raimi’s film follows a young woman who is cursed by an evil gypsy for — of all things — not extending her mortgage.

RELATED: Zack Snyder & Matthias Schweighöfer Talk Army of Thieves’ Influences

What follows is a slap-sticky descent into Hell that owes just as much to Looney Tunes as it does Evil Dead. Sure, some of the effects are a little wonky, but where else are you gonna see an anvil drop onto and splatter an old woman’s head like a melon?

Ready or Not

I’m not typically one who usually enjoys watching films that show people die in atrocious ways, but for whatever reason, I dug 2019’s Ready or Not. The film, starring an excellent Samara Weaving, Adam Brody, Mark O’Brien, Henry Czerny, and Andie MacDowell, follows a young woman who, on the eve of her wedding, must survive a violent game of hide-and-seek as part of some strange family ritual.

Like Drag Me to Hell, the film works as a dark comedy, but also features plenty of supernatural intrigue and should entertain those looking for an entertaining, though slightly predictable, bit of horror.

Monster House

Monster House remains one of the more perplexing cinematic failures, largely because, well, it’s so much fun! Directed by Gil Kenan, the film follows a trio of kids who battle an evil house that may or may not be possessed by their ornery old deceased neighbor.

At turns funny, scary, dark, and smart, Monster House boasts gorgeous animation, a clever story, and a strong script that leans into the blissful ignorance of youth. And yet, the pic is consistently ranked much lower than the likes of Hocus Pocus and Sleepy Hollow on most “Best of Halloween” lists, which is nearly malpractice, if you ask me.

Cabin in the Woods

Drew Goddard unleashed the wildly entertaining Cabin in the Woods in 2012 and the pic grossed a decent $66.5M against a $30M budget, but never really found the success it should have — the April release date didn’t help.

Yet, here we have a wildly entertaining horror pic/meta-commentary on horror pics featuring enough wild left turns to make your head spin.

Plus, get a look at pre-Thor Chris Hemsworth, whose deadpan delivery of the line, “And you have no pants,” remains a fixture in the Ames household.

Will Ferrell Turned Down $29 Million for Elf Sequel

Elf is one of the most legendary holiday movies of all time and is one of the first movies people think of when they hear the name Will Ferrell. Speaking in a recent interview, the actor revealed that a sequel almost came to fruition, but never made it out.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ferrell spoke about the sequel, which was apparently written and would have paid Ferrell a whopping $29 million to reprise his role as Buddy the Elf. However, Ferrell’s decision to walk away from the film was pretty simple, and boiled down to the film just not being good.

“I would have had to promote the movie from an honest place, which would’ve been, like, ‘Oh no, it’s not good. I just couldn’t turn down that much money,’” Ferrell said. “And I thought, ‘Can I actually say those words? I don’t think I can, so I guess I can’t do the movie.’”

Despite not getting the chance to star in the sequel, Ferrell still has gone on to star in a ton of other legendary films, including the Anchorman series, 2006s’s Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, and more in the future. While fans likely would have flocked to the theater for another Elf film, Ferrell instead chose to leave the original as a classic, a move that has so far paid off.

Production is expected to begin in the summer of 2022 and will be filmed in the U.S., the UK, and Italy.

“I instantly fell in love with Ben Shattuck’s flawlessly beautiful short story and knew I had to be involved in its journey to the screen,” filmmaker Oliver Hermanus said in a statement (via The Wrap). “Paul and Josh are two of the most promising actors of their generation who will share with us deeply soulful performances. This is an unexpected love story that needs to be told – it is a journey through the life of America, across the 20th century and the traditions of American folk music, all seen through the bond between two men immersed in the history of sound. This undeniably powerful story will certainly resonate with audiences the world over.”
