BREAKING: Sandman TV Series In Development at Netflix!

Sandman TV Series In Development at Netflix!

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Neil Gaiman’s Sandman comics have found their next attempt at a live-action venture, with streaming service Netflix picking up the option to the series for an adaptation. Wonder Woman co-writer Allan Heinberg will serve as showrunner with both Gaiman and David Goyer executive producing.

No official statement has come from Warner Bros. Television or Netflix just yet, but with San Diego Comic-Con just weeks ago the official announcement could come during one of WBTV’s many panels. THR notes that the series comes with a “massive financial commitment” from both DC Entertainment and Netflix, with the streaming service always eager for the next big thing in television.

Pick Up the first volume of Sandman by clicking here!

There have been countless attempts to turn the seminal Sandman comics into live-action adaptations before, dating back into the 90s when the series began. Recently Joseph Gordon-Levitt was attached to star in and direct a feature film adaptation at WB’s New Line Cinema before that version failed to materialize.

Sandman, which launched DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint, ran for 75 issues beginning in 1989. Gaiman’s worlds-within-worlds weaved an episodic anthology, focusing on the allegorical character of Dream and his brothers and sisters, known as the Endless (Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, Destruction and Destiny).

The Sandman series adaptation marks another high-profile comic adaptation for Netflix, which already has Dark Horse’s Umbrella Academy in production on a second season along with many Mark Millar works like The Magic Order & Jupiter’s Legacy.

Toy Story 4 Remains #1 at the Box Office, Avengers Can’t Catch Avatar

Toy Story 4 Remains #1 at the Box Office, Avengers Can't Catch Avatar

Toy Story 4 Remains #1 at the box office, Avengers can’t catch Avatar

Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 4 held onto the #1 spot at the domestic box office, bringing in $57.9 million and giving it a US total of $236.9 million and putting it just behind Toy Story 2’s domestic total of $245.8 million ($377.84 with inflation). Internationally the sequel took in $80.6 million for an international total of $259.6 million and a global total of $496.5 million (again, right behind Toy Story 2’s worldwide total of $497.4 million worldwide ($764.59 with inflation adjustments)). Disney now has the four highest openings and the four highest grossing movies of 2019 with Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel, Aladdin, and Toy Story 4.

Annabelle Comes Home opened in second place for the weekend, bringing in $20.37 million, the lowest opening for a Conjuring movie to date. The film did open early however, with preview screenings on Tuesday, June 25, and now sits at $31.2 million domestically (a total that puts it more in line with the other two Annabelle movies, but still down from its predecessors). The film may have seen some of its business cannibalized by Child’s Play, or simply franchise fatigue from audiences. Internationally, Annabelle Comes Home brought in  $21.1 million for a worldwide total of $52.3 million.

Danny Boyle’s Beatles-inspired movie Yesterday opened with an estimated $17 million, giving Boyle the highest opening of his career. With an A- Cinemascore, the musical romcom will likely have good legs for the rest of the summer.

Disney’s Aladdin slipped into fourth place in its sixth week, but still managed $9.3 million in the US and another $24.4 million internationally. Domestically the film crossed the $300 million mark, sitting at $305.9 million, and now sits at $568.3 million internationally for a global total of $874.2 million. Aladdin remains the #3 film worldwide for 2019 (behind Avengers: Endgame and Captain Marvel), and is almost assuredly the surprise hit of the summer.

Universal Pictures and llumination’s The Secret Life of Pets 2 held onto fifth place, bringing in $7.09 million for a domestic total of $131.2 million. Internationally the animated sequel now sits at $91.8 million with a worldwide total of $223 million. The first Secret Life of Pets movie brought in $875.5 million globally, over 3.5 times the total gross of the sequel thus far.

Elsewhere at the box office:

Spider-Man: Far From Home is already serving up supreme box office hauls internationally, bringing in $111 million from China, Japan, and Hong Kong alone. It opens in US theaters on July 2.

Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum crossed a box office milestone, with its worldwide total not sitting at $303.6 million.

Avengers: Endgame brought in $7.5 million globally, pushing it within $27 million of Avatar’s global box office total, a feat it will unlikely be able to cross now without even more help.

Child’s Play crashed and burned, falling 69.7% and going from second place to eighth. The film brought in $4.2 million for a domestic total of $23.4 million, a decent total for the $10 million reboot, but well below the other Chucky movies when inflation adjustments are factored in (even the last one to be released in theaters, 2004’s Seed of Chucky).

Mark Wahlberg tapped to replace Chris Evans in Infinite

The Hollywood Reporter has brought word that the upcoming fantasy action thriller Infinite, based on the 2009 novel The Reincarnationist Papers (purchase here), is trading Avengers: Endgame star Chris Evans for Instant Family star Mark Wahlberg.

RELATED: Antoine Fuqua & Chris Evans’ Infinite Gets August 2020 Release Date

Infinite will go up against an untitled WB event film on August 7 next year, while Coming to America 2, starring Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall, has been pushed from that date to December 18, 2020. Avatar 2 was originally meant to release at that time but has since been pushed back to December 17, 2021, by Disney. Coming to America 2 will be released against Disney’s West Side Story on December 18 next year.

Evans, who joined the project in February, reportedly had to leave the role due to scheduling conflicts on his Apple TV crime drama Defending Jacob, which is currently filming around various Massachusetts areas.

The studio had also previously announced that it’s Paramount Animation feature, newly titled Rumble, would arrive on July 17, 2020, but the project has now been pushed back to July 31, 2020.

Directed by Fuqua and starring Evans, Infinite is an action/thriller that tells the story of a group of men and women who are continuously reincarnated century-after-century to battle an evil madman bent on world destruction. The fate of the planet, it turns out, may reside with a schizophrenic man who will have to come to terms with the fact that his dreams are memories from his countless past lives.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura (the Transformers franchise) will be producing alongside Mark Vahradian and John Zaozirny of Bellevue Productions. John Lee Hancock (The Founder) and Ian Shorr (Splinter) are currently attached as screenwriters.

Evans, who has portrayed Steve Rogers/Captain America for the Marvel Cinematic Universe for eight years, is currently starring in his final MCU appearance for the highly-anticipated Phase Three conclusion, Avengers: Endgame, which hit theaters on April 26. He is also set to star in the upcoming ensemble murder mystery movie Knives Out alongside Daniel Craig (Logan Lucky), Lakeith Stanfield (Atlanta), Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water) and Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween), amongst others, from Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), which is set to hit theaters on November 27.

Disney Halts Fox’s Remake of Alien Nation

Disney halts Fox’s remake of Alien Nation

The House of Mouse has stepped in again on an upcoming Fox project as they have put the upcoming remake of the cult classic Alien Nation (pick up the original here) from acclaimed indie writer-director Jeff Nichols (Midnight Special, Loving), according to Variety.

RELATED: Jeff Nichols to Write and Direct Alien Nation Remake

Rather than being put into turnaround, as with the canceled motion-capture film Mouse Guard, Disney has simply put the film on pause.

The original film, directed by Graham Baker, took place in a near-future Los Angeles, shortly after a race of humanoid extraterrestrials, known as Newcomers, took refuge on Earth. An allegory for racial prejudice, the narrative followed a pair of police officers, human Matthew Sykes (James Caan) and Newcomer George Francisco (Mandy Patinkin).

The film was followed by a single season, 22-episode television spinoff with Gary Graham and Eric Pierpoint playing Sikes and Francisco, respectively. The show’s popularity was such that, even after being canceled, Alien Nation continued through a series of telefilms with five different movies were aired between 1994 and 1997.

Iron Man scribes Matt Holloway and Art Marcum were previously attached to provide the screenplay for the film, and given the project being put on hold, it remains to be seen if Nichols simply started over or revised their previous draft.

Nichols’ last feature, Loving, starred Joel Edgerton (Boy Erased), Ruth Negga (Preacher) and Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water) and was a mild commercial success, grossing almost $13 million on a $9 million budget, but was a large critical success, currently maintaining an 89% “Certified Fresh” rating from critics on review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes and earning two Golden Globe nominations and one Oscar nomination.

Hellraiser TV Rights Acquired By IT And Ready Player One Producers

Hellraiser TV Rights Acquired By IT And Ready Player One Producers

Deadline has brought word that IT producer Roy Lee and Ready Player One producer Dan Farah have teamed up and acquired the small screen rights to the long-running horror franchise Hellraiser for its first foray into the TV world.

RELATED: Hellraiser Reboot in Development with David S. Goyer Set to Write

While the duo acquired the rights from Lawrence Kuppin, David Salzman and Eric Gardner, the film rights are held separately by Spyglass Media Group, who is currently working on a remake with Batman vs. Superman scribe David S. Goyer attached to the project.

Hellraiser originally told the story of an unfaithful wife who attempts to assist her dead lover in his escape from hell. Pinhead is the notable villain and one of the movie’s demons called Cenobites. The horror character is summoned using an antique puzzle box.

“For generations, [Barker’s] brilliantly twisted and imaginative Hellraiser haunted the minds of moviegoers with its searing imagery of Pinhead,” Spyglass chairman and CEO Gary Barber previously said. He also added that Goyer was the right storyteller to reimagine Barker’s original vision.

“Having the chance to reimagine Pinhead and the Cenobites for a new audience is a nightmare-come-true. Gary is a true fan as well and we’re committed to making something dark and visceral,” Goyer, whose credits include Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, Man of Steel, Blade: Trinity, The Unborn, and the upcoming Foundation series for Apple, previously said in a statement.

Lee and Farah’s plans for the small screen adaptation are to expand on the mythology introduced throughout the films, as well as the original story “The Hellbound Heart,” with both an original narrative and anthology format being considered for the series. Buy the original film here!

Spyglass will finance, develop, and fast track the Hellraiser film reboot for worldwide theatrical distribution. Keith Levine will produce alongside Goyer via the Phantom Four banner. VP of development and production for Spyglass, Chris Stone, will oversee the project.

While the two are together, Liz calls and leaves a number of messages for the sheriff about the piece of Alec’s boat that her girlfriend found in the swamp. Avery pays a visit to Delroy’s and threatens Liz to leave well enough alone. Liz says that there might have been a time when Avery was untouchable, but no longer.

The sheriff pays a visit to Remy, the man working the docks the night Alec was killed. Remy says that he saw the only other boat that went out that night. It was Matt who took Avery’s boat out and blew up Alec’s boat with dynamite. Remy pulls a gun on the sheriff and says he wants $50,000 to remain silent. Back at Delroy’s, Liz finds her tires slashed in the parking lot. A couple of guys in masks tell her to butt out of Avery’s business. Liz beats one of the attackers. Danny comes out to help her and the second attacker hits Danny over the head with a tire iron. The attackers flee as Danny’s head wound bleeds out.

The Sample

Swamp Thing Episode 5 Recap

Abby is recording her thoughts on the tissue sample when Woodrue overhears her saying that science doesn’t have anything currently capable of explaining what she sees under the microscope. Woodrue interrupts her, stating that whatever the sample is has to have a scientific explanation, not a magical one. Woodrue has figured out that other than he and Abby, the only other quasi-scientist in the swamp was Alec. Did Abby get the sample from Alec’s lab?

Woodrue has one of the locals take him out to Alec’s lab. Something large has been in the lab and made a mess of the place. Woodrue follows the giant footprints and finds a bit of shed vegetation. A quick look under the microscope reveals that it is the same matter as Abby’s sample at the hospital. Woodrue tells Avery that the sample is from a living creature. Woodrue says he needs it captured alive so he can study it. Avery gives Woodrue the number of the best trapper he knows and tells Woodrue to get on it.

But what has returned has been twisted by the darkness and is no longer who Shawna was in life. Shawna tells Abby that she wants to drag Abby into the swamp and drown her, just like Abby killed Shawna 14 years ago. Abby knows that’s not Shawna and leaves the Sunderland mansion. Shawna tells Maria that she can’t stay in Susie’s body for long, that the swamp is calling her back. Shawna asks Maria to come with her to the swamp so that they can be together forever.

Xanadu meets Abby at her car, saying that Maria is in trouble. Maria and Shawna pull away from the mansion and drive past Abby and Xanadu. They follow Maria to the bridge where Shawna was killed. Shawna coaxes Maria into the water and Abby goes after her to save Maria. Maria turns on Abby and tries to drown her. Abby manages to swim away from Maria. Not wanting to be alone, Shawna tries to drown Maria, but Alec saves her from the swamp and Abby resuscitates her. Matt arrives and holds Abby until the paramedics arrive.

Live-action Little Mermaid lines up Melissa McCarthy as Ursula

Variety reports that Academy Award nominee Melissa McCarthy is in early talks to play the role of Ursula in Walt Disney Pictures’ live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. McCarthy can next be seen in New Line Cinema’s graphic novel adaptation The Kitchen. Pat Carroll originally voiced the character in the 1989 original film.

Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall will helm the film which features a script by David Magee (Life of Pi, Mary Poppins Returns). No stranger to musicals, or working for Disney, Marshall was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director for his feature film debut, Chicago. Since then, he’s helmed the likes of Memoirs of a Geisha and Nine. Marshall has also made his last three films at Disney, including Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Into the Woods, and the Poppins sequel.

For their new version of The Little Mermaid, Disney is pairing Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken to create a blend of old and new songs that will be featured in the upcoming big screen version. Miranda and Marshall also worked together on Mary Poppins Returns.

Disney’s animated The Little Mermaid made over $211 million at the box office and became a bestseller on home video, popularizing songs like “Under The Sea” and “Part of Your World.” Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s Danish fairy tale, it tells the story of a 16-year-old mermaid princess named Ariel who longs to be human.

Pedretti, whose upcoming projects include Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Apple’s Amazing Stories anthology series, is set to play the governess, Dani, who is looking after two unique children.
