Golden Globe winner Idris Elba (Luther, Beasts of No Nation, Thor: Ragnarok) is set to star in Beast, an upcoming survival thriller from Universal Pictures with Baltasar Kormákur (2 Guns, The Deep, Jar City) attached to direct, according to Deadline.

Based on an original idea by Jaime Primak-Sullivan, the screenplay will be written by Ryan Engle (Rampage, The Commuter, Non-Stop).

Plot details for Beast are minimal besides it being in the vein of 2016’s The Shallows, but instead of sharks, a lion will apparently “be involved as the central antagonist.”

Will Packer and James Lopez will serve as producers through their Will Packer Productions banner. Kormákur will produce via his RVK Studios with Primak-Sullivan executive producing. Matt Reilly, Universal’s Executive Vice President of Production, along with Creative Executive Tony Ducret will oversee the feature on behalf of the studio.

Beast will mark the second project between Packer, Lopez, Primak-Sullivan, and Engle after the group collaborated on the 2018 Breaking In, starring Gabrielle Union and directed by James McTeigue from a script written by Engle from a story by Primak-Sullivan.

Exclusive: Godzilla’s Michael Dougherty to direct Nightbreed Series!

When reflecting on the 30th anniversary of his original film adaptation of his 1988 novel Cabal, Barker confirmed that he is indeed making progress on the series, currently writing “the bible” for the world of the titular group, and that he’s excited to be working with the Godzilla: King of the Monsters director on the project, as well as on the series adaptation of Hellraiser at HBO on which Dougherty is a writer and executive producer.

“It’s exciting, after 30 years, to go back to these characters and find out who’s still speaking to me, who wants their story told,” Barker brightly expressed. “My tongue isn’t in my cheek when I say that as when I start a piece, it’s listening. The writing is a piece of listening, I’ve always said I was a journalist and what I was reporting on was the space between my ears.”

Barker wrote and directed the film adaptation of his work but, at the time of its release, it was considered a box office failure. In recent decades, the film has since attained a cult status among dark fantasy and horror fans alike.

The project is being written by Josh Stolberg (Jigsaw) and Barker, with the former working to make the property relevant to today’s audience, focusing on the race relations that are interwoven within Nightbreed. The difference is that the tension is between Humans and Monsters.

Nightbreed follows a group of underground half-human/half-monsters seeking to find a new refuge and home after their original hiding place is destroyed. Leading these efforts is a recently turned reluctant hero who not only is adjusting to his new supernatural status but also is dealing with the grief and mystery surrounding the death of his fiancée. Will this group band together despite being hunted and persecuted by humans who find their “otherness” to be frightening?

Morgan Creek’s James G. Robinson, David Robinson and Barbara Wall will be executive producing the planned series. Barker and Mark Miller of Seraphim Films will also be executive producing. Books of Blood, co-written by Barker, Brannon Braga and Adam Simon and directed by Braga, is set to debut on Hulu on October 7!

The Ms. Marvel series was first confirmed at last year’s D23 event, with British writer Bisha K. Ali (Four Weddings and a Funeral) attached to write and showrun the series, while Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige also confirmed that she along with Moon Knight and She-Hulk will all eventually make their way to the big screen.

Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Meera Menon were recently brought on board to direct. El Arbi and Fallah broke out with American audiences with their work on the long-awaited third installment in the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence-starring franchise, Bad Boys for Life, helping launch it to be the highest-grossing and best-reviewed film in the franchise. The duo are currently attached to revive another beloved action-comedy franchise with Netflix’s Beverly Hills Cop 4, which will see the return of series star Eddie Murphy in his iconic role of Axel Foley. Obaid-Chinoy is an Oscar-winning documentarian best known for her work with A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness and Saving Face, while Menon is well-known for her work on the small screen with shows including You, For All Mankind and The Punisher.

Though the Ms. Marvel moniker has been around for decades, originally the superhero name for Carol Danvers, the Khan character took on the name. A Pakistani-American, Khan joined the Marvel comics universe back in 2014 as a result of the Inhumans’ Terrigen Mists being released, triggering her shapeshifting powers. Not only is she capable of stretching her limbs to great lengths and widths, but she can also grow or shrink to incredible sizes. Khan is also inspired by Carol Danvers, who at that point had been “promoted” to the role of Captain Marvel, and decides to take on her old moniker of Ms. Marvel to fight crime and do good.

The Criterion Channel has announced a slew of 70’s horror that will be available on the streaming service in October leading up to the Halloween holiday. Check out the trailer below!

In the 1970s, everything was wilder, weirder, and more far-out—and horror movies were no exception. In North America, a new generation of maverick directors like Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre), George A. Romero (The Crazies), Wes Craven (The Hills Have Eyes), Brian De Palma (Sisters), and David Cronenberg (The Brood) responded to the decade’s heightened political anxieties and Vietnam War–era sense of disillusionment by pushing the genre’s psychological intensity and visceral violence to shocking new heights. Across the Atlantic, Britain’s legendary Hammer Films continued to serve up old-school gothic spine-tinglers (The Vampire Lovers), while auteurs like Nicolas Roeg (Don’t Look Now) wedded spellbinding terror to art-house experimentation. Bringing together some of the decade’s most iconic slashers, chillers, and killer thrillers alongside low-budget cult rarities (Let’s Scare Jessica to Death, Deathdream) and camp-tastic oddities (Trog, Theater of Blood), this tour through the 1970s nightmare realm is a veritable blood feast of perverse pleasures from a time when gore, grime, and sleaze found a permanent home in horror.

Conan the Barbarian TV Series in Development at Netflix

Deadline is reporting that a live-action Conan the Barbarian series is in development at Netflix based on the character created by pulp fiction writer Robert E. Howard. A search is underway for a writer and showrunner to pen the adaptation as well as a director to helm the series.

The project is reportedly the first in a deal between Netflix and Conan Properties International. The deal allows the streaming giant the exclusive option to acquire rights to the Conan literary library and to develop live-action and animated works across film and television.

The Conan the Barbarian character was introduced in 1932 in a series of short stories that were published in Weird Tales magazine. The stories brought to life the “Sword and Sorcery” genre of writing and inspired over a thousand comic books, one hundred novels, three movies, two series, video games, as well as a variety of merchandise worldwide.

John Milius’ classic 1982 movie adaptation, Conan the Barbarian, starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as the titular character and earned co-star Sandahl Bergman a Golden Globe. Schwarzenneger reprised the character in the 1984 sequel Conan the Destroyer, this time directed by Richard Fleischer. Jason Momoa later took on the role in the 2011 Conan the Barbarian reboot from Marcus Nispel.

Francis and The Godfather: Oscar Isaac to Play Francis Ford Coppola, Jake Gyllenhaal Set as Robert Evans

Oscar-winner Barry Levinson (Rain Man, Bugsy, Dopesick) is set to direct Francis and The Godfather, an upcoming drama about the “legendary and wild battles” behind the making of the 1972 Oscar-winning crime drama The Godfather, with Golden Globe winner Oscar Isaac (Show Me a Hero, Ex Machina, Star Wars franchise) starring as The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola and Oscar nominee Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler, Brokeback Mountain, Prisoners) portraying producer Robert Evans (via Deadline).

RELATED: The Guilty: Netflix Acquires Jake Gyllenhaal & Antoine Fuqua Thriller Film

Francis and The Godfather is based on a Black List script written by Andrew Farotte, which was redeveloped by Levinson.

“Out of the madness of production, and against all odds, a classic film happened,” said Levison, regarding the difficulties behind the development of The Godfather that the film will be exploring.

“Coppola was 31 at the time, determined to convince Evans and the studio to allow him to film expensively in New York, set in the time period of a novel which would become a big bestseller. This after the original Mario Puzo script was set in contemporary Kansas City. Among the other debates was the idea to gamble on Marlon Brando, an eclectic character who hadn’t been in a hit film in years, to play mob family patriarch Don Corleone (for which he would win the Best Actor prize), and also Al Pacino as Michael Corleone, a character who slowly evolved from a desire to get far away from the family business to taking it over when it was clear his father would be murdered even after a bungled assassination attempt. Evans, who took the top job after a career as an actor, had pressures all his own, as the studio was in danger of closing up shop. There was also the uneasy discussions with real mobsters who were none too pleased to have their dirty business to be aired in a major studio film,” the outlet shares.

Coppola reportedly gave his approval for Francis and the Godfather, saying: “Any move that Barry Levinson makes about anything, will be interesting and worthwhile!”

“Here was a young man who lived outside the system and every step of the way the system was telling him, ‘You can’t do that.’ But Francis never gave up on his vision and the result speaks for itself,” added Echo Lake Entertainment’s Mike Marcus.
