Legendary taps Peter Dinklage to lead The Toxic Avenger reboot

After announcing development of a reboot of the cult classic superhero dark comedy franchise in March 2019 with Macon Blair set to write and direct, Legendary has tapped Game of Thrones alum Peter Dinklage to lead The Toxic Avenger, according to Deadline.

Blair’s directorial debut, I Don’t Feel At Home in This World Anymore, premiered in 2017 and won the Grand Jury Prize award at the Sundance Film Festival. Onscreen, Blair has starred in Blue Ruin, Green Room, Murder Party, Gold, Logan Lucky, American Woman, and Netflix’s horror drama Hold the Dark.

The original 1984 comedy, produced by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, is set in the fictional town of Tromaville, N.J., and centered on a mild-mannered janitor at a health club who’s chased out a second story window by bullies and lands in a drum of toxic waste. The chemicals cause him to transform into the Toxic Avenger, who has superhuman size and strength and stands up to bullies and corruption.

Kaufman and Herz will serve as producers on the reboot for Troma Entertainment, with Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter overseeing for Legendary. The studio acquired the rights to the film back in December 2018.

Rosario Dawson Reveals How She Was Cast As Ahsoka Tano in The Mandalorian

The long-awaited live-action debut of Ahsoka Tano finally happened in the latest episode of The Mandalorian. One of the most influential female characters in Star Wars is portrayed on the small screen by actress Rosario Dawson. In an extended interview with Vanity Fair, Dawson talked about the long process that brought her to portray Anakin Skywalker’s former Padawan in live-action (via SuperHeroHype).

“It first came from fans online,” she said. “Someone tweeted me and fancast me. I retweeted back and I was like, ‘Absolutely, yes please’ and ‘#AhsokaLives.’ And apparently that got the attention of someone who has been doing the Star Wars press for years. She forwarded it to Dave Filoni. That kind of started a whole thing. I was like, ‘Oh my goodness, did I just get fancast in something?’ And then nothing happened.”

It took a while before she got the call from Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, The Mandalorian producers. Given the importance of the Star Wars Universe character, the creative duo had to ponder the casting.

The producers called Dawson right before the series’ debut, showing the actress some concept art as Ahsoka. When it came to the moment, Filoni felt that the choice was the right one.

“When I was first exploring the possibility of directing live-action, I asked [Lucasfilm president] Kathleen Kennedy about casting and when you knew someone was right for a part,” Filoni said in the same interview. “She thought about it and said, ‘You just know.’ And she was right. When I met Rosario, I just knew she was right for Ahsoka. Yes there was the tweet, and her interest in the part, yes she has been in action movies and is a huge fan of sci-fi and fantasy stories, yes, she knew Hayden Christensen and pictures of them together look like Anakin and Ahsoka. But in the end, when I met her and we talked, I just knew.”

Hayden Christensen portrayed Anakin Skywalker in the prequel trilogy. He and Dawson went to the same acting school, Strasberg, and happened to have the same class. Apparently, they bonded, and fans are still dreaming of seeing them together on the screen as Ahsoka and Anakin. In the meantime, you can check the official photos from the latest episode of the show in the gallery below.

Noah Hawley Talks Future of Alien TV Series and Star Trek 4

Well, fans will have to wait for a while before watching anything new from the Alien Universe. When Disney acquired 21st Century Fox, the rights of the franchise passed to the House of Mouse, which seemed potentially interested in a TV series with the famous xenomorph. But according to Legion showrunner Noah Hawley, the talks for a show have stalled, for the moment (via SuperHeroHype).

“I know that there’s an effort to reshuffle a lot of things post-Disney takeover and it was a conversation that I had a couple years back,” he said to Deadline. “And I have not in the last few weeks been having those conversations about it. But I know that like any studio that there’s a great desire to make the most of one’s library so I wouldn’t be surprised to see something like that.”

In the same interview, Hawley also talked about the future of the Star Trek movies. He was at one point attached to the fourth movie after the reboot. But like with the Alien show, it seems that things are on hold at Paramount right now.

“It doesn’t appear to be in my immediate future,” he added. “I think when Emma [Watts, President of Paramount Pictures] came in, she took a look at the franchise and wanted to go in a different direction with it. But you know, life is long, we were very close to production but in this business that doesn’t mean much. You got to get out of the gate to be in the race if you know what I mean.”

Do you think that we will get an Alien series? And what do you think about the future of Star Trek 4? Let us know in the comments section below.

Angie Morgan (Jane Widdop) is deep in her rebellious teen phase, acting out against her absent parents with her secret new boyfriend, Mario (Sprayberry). However, unbeknownst to her, Mario is a reluctant agent of a vast sex trafficking network, and he is forced to drag Angie into a horrifying world of rape and abuse. As the police and her heartbroken parents fight to find her, Angie and the other trafficked girls struggle to maintain hope and stay alive. When Angie finally escapes and is brought home, she is haunted by the atrocities done to her and by the shadowy figures still pursuing her. In The Prom, Dee Dee Allen (three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep) and Barry Glickman (Tony Award winner James Corden) are New York City stage stars with a crisis on their hands: their expensive new Broadway show is a major flop that has suddenly flatlined their careers. Meanwhile, in small-town Indiana, high school student Emma Nolan (newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman) is experiencing a very different kind of heartbreak: despite the support of the high school principal (Keegan-Michael Key), the head of the PTA (Kerry Washington) has banned her from attending the prom with her girlfriend, Alyssa (Ariana DeBose). When Dee Dee and Barry decide that Emma’s predicament is the perfect cause to help resurrect their public images, they hit the road with Angie (Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman) and Trent (Andrew Rannells), another pair of cynical actors looking for a professional lift. But when their self-absorbed celebrity activism unexpectedly backfires, the foursome find their own lives upended as they rally to give Emma a night where she can truly celebrate who she is.

The film adaptation stars newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman, Meryl StreepNicole Kidman, Kerry Washington, James Corden, Tracey Ullman, Ariana DeBose, Keegan-Michael Key, Andrew Rannells and Kevin Chamberlin. It is being produced by Bill Damaschke (Shrek the Musical) and Dori Berinstein (One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest). Nicholaw, Sklar, Beguelin and Martin will also be joining Murphy for the film’s creative production.

Murphy is no stranger to the musical comedy genre as he previously created and produced Fox’s Golden Globe-winning musical series Glee which ran on air for six seasons from 2009-2015.
